Today in Austria:
[ul]
[li] A draft of the government’s plans to further loosen the lockdown has been leaked to the press. According to the draft, the new rules will take effect from 1 May:[/li]
[li] There are no longer any restrictions on leaving one’s home. (Until now, one could leave only to go to work, to go shopping, to help those in need, and to exercise.)[/li][li] When outside the home, everyone must keep a distance of one metre from those not sharing their houehold, and must wear face coverings in enclosed spaces.[/li][li] Public events with more than 30 people are, in general, prohibited. Public worship is permitted provided that the place of worship admits no more than one person per 20 square metres of floor space. There are no restrictions on private gatherings.[/li][li] Work is to be conducted from home wherever possible. Where this is not possible, employees must maintain a distance of one metre from each other (and from customers, etc.).[/li][li] It is permitted to travel together with those not in one’s household, including in vehicles, provided everyone wears face coverings and maintains a distance of one metre from one another.[/li][li] Restaurants, cafés, bars, and hotels remain closed for in-person dining, but can continue to offer delivery and take-out service. Exceptions to the in-person dining restriction include cafeterias and dining halls in hospitals, care homes, schools, and workplaces for the use of residents, students, and staff.[/li][li] Elementary and high schools, driving schools, music schools, and occupational schools for health and social workers may open. All other types of schools must remain closed.[/li][li] Museums, libraries, theatres, concert halls, sports venues, and other recreational facilities must remain closed.[/li][/ul]
[li] As of today, the city of Vienna is now enforcing on-street parking fees once again. Enforcement had been suspended since mid-March in a bid to encourage essential workers to drive themselves to work rather than crowd public transit.[/li]
[li] Today’s celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Austrian republic were significantly scaled back. There were no public celebrations; all speeches and ceremonies took place without a live audience (but were broadcast online and on radio and TV).[/li]
[li] In the chancellor’s speech marking the aforementioned national anniversary, he promised a pay raise for all those “who keep our society running”.[/li]
[li] Last week’s plans for a special express train from Romania to transport health care workers have run into trouble. Romania’s national rail operator is objecting on the grounds that it was not invited to operate the trains, at least on the Romanian part of the journey. The Hungarian rail operator has also been drawn into the debate.[/li]
[li] Results of a study of elementary and high school students from the University of Vienna: 25% of students are studying at home less than 3.5 hours per day. 16% of students do not have access to a computer or tablet for studying at home. 21% of students don’t have access to help from a family member for home study.[/li]
[li] The national associations of music and sports teachers, respectively, are speaking out against the government’s back-to-school plans, which propose to entirely omit music and physical education lessons. The associations claim that it is indeed possible to teach music and sport while maintaining coronavirus safety measures.[/li]
[li] Current statistics: 15,239 confirmed infections, 549 deaths, 12,362 recovered. 140 of those infected are currently in intensive care. 1073 intensive care beds remain available.[/li]
Now, before we get too excited, note that that isnt by % of population or per capita. The USA is the third most populous nation, and we dont have good numbers for China or India. I suspect that if we did, their numbers might be higher. Hard to tell, I admit.
Spain, Belgium, & Italy all have higher per capita.
I just came in to post this. So sad. The PTSD on this will be brutal.
Here’s a first person account from the trenches- how a gamer copes
3,064,837 total cases
211,609 dead
922,397 recovered
In the US:
1,010,507 total cases
56,803 dead
138,990 recovered
Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:
The US recorded our 1,000,000th case around mid-day today.
Duplicate.
I am cross-posting this in this thread and in the STRIOTD thread in The BBQ Pit.
Republican leader wants anti-lockdown protesteros to wear medical scrubs.
More nuttery at the link.
This optimistic(?) message inverts if we focus on just New York State. NY has higher population than a large majority of the world’s countries.
With total covid-19 deaths of 1144 per million, NY state is only barely behind San Marino; and has almost double the death rate of #3 Belgium.
In confirmed covid-19 cases per million, NY state has 14,800 and is again barely behind only San Marino. With 6000 cases per million, Luxembourg is highest among all but micro-countries, but has only 40% of the NY rate.
Of course, if NY is singled out then to “compare apples with apples” Lombardy, Madrid, Catalonia and Greater London would also need to be singled out. And some countries are publishing deflated numbers. Still, what’s happening in parts of the USA is brutal.
Just noting that for diagnosed cases, that is a more than 5 percent mortality.
Which may mean there are over a million Americans who have been infected and not even got tested.
Working from those numbers:
29% of cases that have been resolved (recovered or dead) were resolved by death.
Over 814,000 cases remain unresolved. Tell me this isn’t as frightening as it seems.
Is there any tracking to see what happens to people who test positive? I was assuming the large numbers of unresolved cases are because people got tested and then recovered on their own without doing any followup.
In Cambridge and Somerville, Massachusetts, new rule – if you do not wear a mask ANYWHERE (except inside your own home), you can get a $300 fine. Anywhere includes anywhere outside – sidewalks, parks, stores (obviously). Also in buildings with more than 2 units you have to wear a mask in any common areas (stairs, hallways, yard).
Wow. We rode our horses Saturday. We were always on our property or the property of adjacent land owners who allow us to use their land. Saw nobody (other than a car as we crossed a back road).
Wearing a mask while riding would have been strange.
