Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

In general, yes I would agree that it is a good sign. However, too much is still unknown about incubation period and actual spread of the virus to say the worst is over - I think.

Here’s a statement from a nurse in NorCal who treated a COVID patient and then started showing symptoms. But the CDC won’t test them because they were wearing protective gear when treating the patient, so they obviously can’t have it. This is all kinds of messed up.

First case in Indiana!

Is there a live map that tracks areas in the US with Covid-19 cases? There’s plenty of world maps that track countries, but nothing I can find for the US. It seems like someone, probably CDC has this data at their fingertips and could provide it to a map tracker, either government-made or by a third party.

The Johns Hopkins map can be zoomed in and out. If you zoom in on the US, you can see states and cities. Clicking on a dot will give you info for that city/area.

ETA: You can also click the country on the left hand column and the map will focus there and display numbers for that country only.

Ooh, nice!! Thanks!

If this situation were not a big enough cluster already, add to it the difficulty in even knowing who has the disease in this country.
-CA expected the capacity to test a million people by this weekend. They are at about 7000.
-Nurses who treat sensitive patients can’t get tests. Glaringly sick people can’t.
-The stupidity of the Trump administration’s response is inexplicable. How many people are the CDC testing? Who knows, they took that information off their website! And Trump keeps lying about this thing in public. Even taking it as a given that these guys only care about stock prices and reelection, this isn’t the kind of thing that can be muzzled like a hooker with an NDA. Thousands of deaths won’t help anything. Lockdowns and quarantines everywhere will tank consumer spending, crashing markets further.

I am convinced this will get worse before it gets better. I think the Seattle school closings are just the beginning- it will happen most everywhere. Am I overreacting? Convince me! Tell me how to set aside the fact that a deadly, contagious virus is spreading mostly in secret, on both coasts and also in the Rockies. How does this not blow up?

My parents ares still planning on taking a cruise they already paid for to the Carribean coming up on the 11th! I still can’t believe they’re going. I understand not wanting to lose out on the money, but geez.

In “Making lemons out of lemonade” news, today might be a good day to check in with your mortgage broker about refinancing.

SXSW has been cancelled.

… also, cruises are SUPER CHEAP, for you IDGAF types. Since I’m a IDGAF type, I have an appointment with my cruise guy (yes, I have one, what of it? ) next week.

I’d totally still go. But I’m also younger and pretty healthy. Maybe I’d feel differently if I was 60+, but even then, maybe not.

It’s not the fear of getting sick that would stop me. It’s the fear of all ports of call being canceled, and being locked in my cabin for 2 weeks because one other person got sick.

Omaha has its first confirmed case (not counting the infected from the cruise ship who were later quarantined there). A woman traveling to/from the UK.

Not feeling very good about this, as I live an hour and a half away and will be flying out from Omaha in June. Looks like they took steps right away at the hospital, but who knows who might have been infected beforehand.

I agree with you about the lack of testing and the removal of testing numbers from the CDC website. In my mind this is the biggest worry. The US is not doing a good job of testing whatsoever, and this will contribute, I think, to bad stuff.
‘Broken’ Coronavirus Testing Process in U.S. Coud Have Enabled Covid-19 to Spread ‘Silently’ for Weeks, Experts Warn

Trump, in front of the CDC, openly admits he won’t allow the Covfefe-19 victims off the cruise ship because to do so will raise the number of American cases and make him look bad.

“I like the numbers being where they are. I don’t need to have the numbers double because of one ship”

Tennessee has it’s first confirmed case.

Exclusive: The Strongest Evidence Yet That America Is Botching Coronavirus Testing
“I don’t know what went wrong,” a former CDC chief told The Atlantic.

This is a long article (paywalled for non-subscribers). The end:

That’s courageous leadership right there.

Yeah, this administration has so many reasons to downplay the numbers, and the test kit situation is all messed up.

I’m pretty sure there are a LOT more infected Americans than any one is admitting.

This cruise ship case is so similar to the one in Tokyo that it almost seems like a test.
Did we learn anything? Did we learn that close confinement within a ship will lead to hundreds of cases? Certainly some preventable deaths. Did we learn that those people need to be transferred to land based quarantine before everyone is infected?

It looks like we learned nothing. If they keep those people in quarantine on that ship, I’ll be ashamed.

The US deserves whatever this virus does to us. We had a two month head start and did nothing. Fortunately it isn’t all that fatal. Unless you happen to be a little older. Or you are unlucky.
