Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

Ironically, Trumps border wall might save Mexico from the USA.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly was one of the first in the nation to close schools and order a shutdown. Of course, she was vilified by the right, to the point where she bowed to pressure and allowed the state to open before it was advisable.

Today, she mandated wearing of masks in public. The order goes into effect on 3 July. Kelly said:

When the pandemic first hit, there was mixed messaging about masks. Now the evidence could not be clearer. Wearing a mask is not only safe but it is necessary to avoid another shutdown.

Already on social media she is being raked over the coals. Gotta admire her guts.

“The first healthy volunteers have now received a candidate coronavirus vaccine developed by Imperial researchers.”

Goes into effect Wednesday.

Literally half of my family is infected right now. They live in Georgia. As much as I want to go down there and help, I just can’t take the chance being in that hot zone. I’m freaking out at the idea the hospitals will be completely swamped right when my parents are in need of urgent medical care.

In the worse case scenario that I envisioned back in April, I figured only two family members would get sick at a time, which would keep some “human resources” in reserve to help them. How foolish I was to think that was the “worse”.

And Mexico got us to pay for it!

Didn’t the Supreme Court cancel that check? (Or was it a lower federal court?)

What is your assessment of the sorts of risks? I ask this sincerely - not trying to be critical.

Personally, I can imagine staying away from a congested area like Manhattan. And I’m in no hurry to fly ANYWHERE. But I’d imagine that even with a sizeable uptick in a specific locality, there are likely huge swaths of surrounding area where there would be minimal - if any - risk.

My assessment is based on my own health concerns. If I get infected, I will not be allowed to go into the clinic where I’m being treated for my breast cancer. Mayhap I’d get infected and I could get the virus out of my system before my surgery date. That would be terrific. But I ain’t banking on it. I’ve heard of people being sick as long as two months. I just can’t risk it.

I talked to my oncologist yesterday and she said that she has seen a higher than normal rate of cancellations for surgical appointments. She said didn’t say asmuch, but she kind of hinted that several of her scheduled patients have gotten sick from COVID. I hate that I even have this thought, but I’m hoping this continues so that I can grab one of her July appointments. I’m scared if I wait too long, another lockdown will happen before I can get my surgery. And that I will suck sooooooooo bad.

The county where I live in western PA has had 73 confirmed COVID 19 cases and 6 deaths. I can walk out my door and know I will not see another human. I can take the dogs walking in the woods for hours and not encounter another human. Overall I feel fairly safe, but you couldn’t pay me to travel by air, attend an indoor event, or go grocery shopping sans mask.

Thanks for your response. Sorry for your personal health concerns. Hope all goes as well as could be expected.

How are they going to enforce that?

US citizens not allowed into the European Union Countries.
Citizens of Russia and Brazil are also not allowed in.

If you are from Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, Uruguay, you are allowed to visit the EU countries.

US Citizens are still not allowed into Canada, unless on Essential travel. I expect this will continue for the foreseeable future.

The news from Panama has pretty much all been bad. As of mid-May, we were averaging 150-170 new cases a day, and it looked like things were more or less under control. But then they decided to open up parts of the economy, and new cases began to soar. Three of the past five days new cases have topped 1,000, and yesterday was 1,099, the highest it’s ever been. This is despite one of the most severe lockdowns anywhere in the world, with most people only allowed to go out for two hours a day every other day (based on ID number and sex, with men and women on alternate days and nobody on Sunday). They briefly relaxed the movement limitations so everyone could go out between 5 AM and 7 PM, but that was after the number of new cases began to increase, and they shut things down again in the Panama City metropolitan area (where most of the cases have been) within less than a week.

Most of the cases are concentrated in poorer neighborhoods in the older part of Panama City and the suburbs to the west and east. Things aren’t so bad elsewhere in the country.

The President fired the Minister of Health last week, though I don’t know how much she has been personally responsible for the failure to get things under control. There have also been multiple scandals. Early on a vice minister of health fired for selling ventilators at inflated prices. The most recent one was because the members of the President’s party in the legislature decided to have a party meeting in a popular restaurant, even though all other restaurants are closed. They’ve been fined tens of thousands of dollars.

I have a friend who’s a British citizen, even though she’s lived in New York for 30 years and has two grown kids here. She’s flying to London on Friday to visit family. Since she’s a British citizen, she’s allowed in. Not sure I see the sense in that. Isn’t she just as likely to be contagious as someone who’s a US citizen living in the US?

I’m glad she gets to go. II just don’t get the logic.

As a returning citizen, She will have to self quarantine for 14 days after arrival or risk a large fine. In other words she cannot see her family for the first 2 weeks.

Right. She’s got reservations at a B&B for the first two weeks.
