Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

Shit’s getting real:
New York Post : Costco discontinues sales of its popular sheet cakes.
Half-sheetpan cakes are no longer being sold at Costcos in the US due to CV-19 causing smaller gatherings.

Gregory Abbott really screwed things up (like most Republicans) but give him some credit, he’s swallowed humble pie and acknowledged the need to change things.

All he’s done is close bars again, and blame 20 somethings.

Lol, you know his staff just created an Excel pivot table to find out what class of business owners aren’t donating to his campaign.

“Greg, good news. Bar owners donated just .2% of all revenues for your last campaign.”

“Great! Shut those bastards down. Tonight!”

I got one too. Same as what JohnT posted!

10,082,618 total cases
501,309 dead
5,458,523 recovered

In the US:

2,596,537 total cases
128,152 dead
1,081,437 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

At this rate, it seems likely that the world will have 11,000,000 total cases by 4 July.

Everyone’s talking about a vaccine, which would be great. But in the meantime, I’m thinking that our most realistic exit might involve a drug cocktail.

A cocktail, not a vaccine, is how we’ve managed to take HIV from being a killer to something that can be managed.

And what is this cocktail going to cost, assuming that it is as good as advertised?

it’s hard to imagine it would cost as much as shit canning the entire economy.

I meant to the individual, not to society, as it is obvious that society is not going to pay for it.

And do you consider the current state to be “shit canning”? Most things are open in one way or another. I’ve been open for 6 weeks now.

Pretty much the only thing left is restaurants, bars, and public venues. Restaurants and bars are going to be difficult, but doable if done right. Public venues just need to be something that we don’t really have anymore.

I am not really making money, in fact, due to lower capacity, sanitation, and social distancing procedures, I’m losing a bit every day. But, I have the PPP loan, whose entire point is to allow me to operate at a bit of a loss and not worry about going under.

I think that we can probably keep things about as open as they are, assuming that people take individual responsibility and precautions. If people refuse to do so, then we may find ourselves needing to go back to measures that are much more harmful, or being forced into an even worse situation if the pandemic becomes uncontrollable.

If anyone is worried about the economy being shit canned, then they need to step up and practice social distancing and mask wearing, and lead by example to their peers.

This isn’t meant to be political, but I just had a thought. Could we get better buy in if we started marketing MAGA masks?

If Trump actually wore one, and advocated for them, then, yeah, I do think it’d make a huge difference in buy-in, as it does appear that a lot of the mask-haters are his supporters. Unfortunately, that seems extremely unlikely.

Paywall. What is this alleged ‘cocktail’? (Please let it involve rye, bourbon, rum, or tequila.)

Fair question to ask, and nobody knows right now. It might be that in the short term, congress and the president could pressure drug makers to keep costs low, with financial incentives for the companies no doubt.

I can’t see past the paywall, either, but I suspect that the researcher isn’t saying, “we already have a drug cocktail, and here’s what it is,” so much as “we believe that there is likely to be a drug cocktail (i.e., a combination of several drugs) that can prove to be an effective treatment for COVID-19.” The headline, “There’s a cocktail out there” is a little deceptive, as it makes it sound like it’s a certainty.

I first heard the term in connection with HIV/AIDS in the 1990s, as researchers discovered that several drugs, when used in combination, could be effective in treating the disease.

Good news!

Meanwhile, in Ontario…

Uh oh. Down Leamington way, 96 of 98 new cases of COVID-19 have been found among migrant farm workers. (Ontario actually has a significant population of workers come from Mexico to help in the harvest.) Leamington, Ont., rallies behind migrant workers as 96 farm workers test positive for COVID-19

Uh oh. An outbreak at a nail salon in Kingston. 16 22 (as of Sunday) cases. And now an employee at a second salon has tested positive. Worker at 2nd nail salon tests positive as Kingston COVID-19 cases keep rising

I got a haircut a week ago Friday at a local salon. I had to wear a mask, and give my name and contact info and fill out a sheet when I arrived. Sessions were by appointment only. The stylist work a mask and face shield, and I saw them clean the chair and workstation between customers. (After my haircut, the facial-recognition timeclocks at work would not recognize me reliably. I had to get my face reregistered.)

Uh on. It looks like immunity may not be as easily found as had been hoped. Asymptomatic COVID-19 findings dim hopes for ‘herd immunity’ and ‘immunity passports’

Two Canadian airlines want to relax physical distancing rules. They say it’s okay because people are wearing masks. Critics not on board with airlines’ decision to relax in-flight physical distancing during COVID-19

The CBC’s COVID-19 tracker: New cases in Ontario are on a long slow bumpy decline, now around 100-200. Considering that there were as many as 500 new cases per day in early May, things have improved. Testing rates are currently around 8500 per 100 000 population. But we must be cautious.

Number of COVID-19 cases in Ontario increases for second day in a row but remains under 200

On the other hand, maybe the economy is in better shape than we thought: The numbers don’t lie: Why the Canadian economy is already in much better shape than it looks

I’ve been back at work for a month, and we are already getting overtime again. Essentially, the lockdown layoff was a really weird two-month paid holiday, with nowhere much to go, and horrible headlines every night.

10,243,859 total cases
504,410 dead
5,553,495 recovered

In the US:

2,637,077 total cases
128,437 dead
1,093,456 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

State health officials said the spike in COVID-19 case numbers today is “largely due to a cluster of 17 Honolulu cases all associated with attending a funeral.”

“Contact tracing also identified six cases in Leeward Oahu associated with known clusters, and all of the cases are in isolation.”

The Big Island case was associated with travel to Georgia, and the two Kauai cases are part of a known cluster, they said.

Ugh. Wife and I have an upcoming trip to Georgia (birth of #10 grandchild). I don’t see us doing much going out while there. Then T’giving and Xmas in Texas - just keeps getting better - not.

Isn’t Georgia one of the places that said to heck with the consequences, they’re going to open up because, hey, it’s our right and the constituition doesn’t say the governor can restrict us anyway?

I’d avoid the place, to be honest. And, yes, I have family there also.

Georgia reported record numbers of cases on June 26. Then broke the record on June 27. Then broke that record on June 29. They are experiencing major growth at the moment. Georgia has had more cases/100k population (57.6) in the past three days than my province has had in the entire timeline of the pandemic (56.7) And we are STILL being more cautious that Georgia is right now.

This is why the border to the US is closed to all but essential travel, and probably will remain so for the forseeable future.
