Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

Yes, I’ve been pulling excess death data (which comes directly from County coroner reporting) and I was glad to see it updated yesterday.

15,654,649 total cases
636,479 dead
9,535,641 recovered

In the US:

4,169,991 total cases
147,333 dead
1,979,617 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

So Mel Gibson’ rep tells Daily Telegraph Australia and other media that he was hospitalized for a week back in April with COVID-19 in Los Angeles and treated with Remdesivir.

Fuck him for not saying anything 3 months ago when he could have influenced more people to take it seriously. He is probably the most prominent star to have come down with it (along with Tom Hanks) and could have had influence with conservatives.

A minor point, to be sure, but I’m curious: why nobody is talking about the effect of all this on sex in America. Nobody going to bars hoping to get lucky? America, masturbating like a motherfuck?

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene issued these guidelines.

I plead the fifth.

I guess we need a [sexual activity]-to-steps conversion so you can log it in your Fitbit.

Just put your fitbit on the hand you masturbate with!

Does that record strokes or just total distance?

If it records both, we could calculate total distance divided by number of strokes…

This is something I’ve been wondering for awhile. What are the criteria for “recovered”? Are those suffering significant long-term health effects considered recovered? Do you know?

AFAIK “recovered” just means no longer testing positive and/or being dead.

Silliness aside it is a serious subject, not a minor point.

STD screenings are way off while sexual risk-taking continues.

Therapists I’ve spoken with report similarly among their young adult clients. Clients who are paranoid about COVID-19 risks are at the same time still taking sexual health risks. And likely there is some overlap between the set of those willing to be risky in their sexual behaviors and those willing to be relatively risky regarding social distancing due to COVID-19.

It will be surprising to not see a big spike in reported STD rates once screening services are back to full functionality on the other side of this pandemic.

Partnered people quarantining together though may just be sick of each other!

So what behaviors are sexually risky but still COVID-19 safe? Maybe I just lack imagination…

Or is there some other way that people can be paranoid about COVID-19 risks while taking sexual health risks? (Other than living in a gigantic disconnect, I guess?)

I suppose they wear gimp masks

Or use glory holes. That’s implicit in the NY health dept. memo

Salad tossing? You’d at least have them breathing heavy in another direction and 3’ higher.

Sorry to have been confusing. They ignore all safety when it comes to sexual behaviors. They may quarantine their mail but not their males …

Trump’s son’s school will not fully reopen

The school attended by President Trump’s son will not fully reopen in September out of concern over the coronavirus pandemic despite the president’s insistence that students across the country be brought back to classrooms in the fall.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, a private school in Washington’s Maryland suburbs, said in a letter to parents that it was still deciding whether to adopt a hybrid model for the fall that would allow limited in-person education or to resume holding all classes completely online as was done in the spring. The school will decide early next month which option to follow.

Our school board has come up with a definite Maybe. “Committees are now working on reopening plans” including a) everybody at school, b) nobody at school, and c) the hybrid model. Glad my kids are out of school. (Daughter will be doing all of her college classes on-line.)
