Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

15,941,806 total cases
642,751 dead
9,724,289 recovered

In the US:

4,248,327 total cases
148,490 dead
2,028,074 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

South Korea saw more than 100 new cases today, their first triple digit day in almost 4 months.

The US had a record number of new cases with over 78,000 today.

Yesterday, Hawaii hit a single-day record with 55 new cases reported. Today we broke that record with 60.

The running total now is 1549 cases and 26 deaths. It will be interesting to see how this hurricane that’s bearing down on us affects the situation.

On June 26, a small South San Francisco company called Vaxart made a surprise announcement: A coronavirus vaccine it was working on had been selected by the U.S. government to be part of Operation Warp Speed, the flagship federal initiative to quickly develop drugs to combat Covid-19.

Vaxart’s shares soared. Company insiders, who weeks earlier had received stock options worth a few million dollars, saw the value of those awards increase sixfold. And a hedge fund that partly controlled the company walked away with more than $200 million in instant profits.

Across the pharmaceutical and medical industries, senior executives and board members are capitalizing on that dynamic.

They are making millions of dollars after announcing positive developments, including support from the government, in their efforts to fight Covid-19. After such announcements, insiders from at least 11 companies — most of them smaller firms whose fortunes often hinge on the success or failure of a single drug — have sold shares worth well over $1 billion since March, according to figures compiled for The New York Times by Equilar, a data provider.

I’m not sure if it’s any consolation, but the rise in share price is because of demand by speculative investors rather than tax dollars from the general public. Those investors are likely buying shares in many pharmaceutical companies knowing that many will fail but some will hit it big. It’s similar to investments in startup software companies or an expanding real estate market. The investors know that they are throwing money away in 90% of the investments, but the 10% that are successful make up for the rest.

Well, I sure am glad not everybody’s hurting due to the crisis.

Well, several million people’s crisis is a windfall for a lucky few.

Well, damn. Today is the third day in a row that Hawaii has a new record high for cases reported, 73 today. That’s at least four record highs for the month, maybe five.

What is compliance like in Hawaii for masks and social distancing? Were the cases low because they were successfully keeping CV off the island or because the residents were taking appropriate precautions?

I’d say a little bit of all of the above. A few cranks keep trying to challenge any measures in court, saying they’re not needed since cases are so low. The courts keep saying the cases are so low because the measures are friggin’ working. But we’re seeing an exponential rise now. Will have to see what develops.

I’ve seen a handful of articles and videos about people breaking quarantine in Hawaii; that can’t be helping any.

Massachusetts to Institute Fines for Non-Compliance with New Travel Restrictions

Effective August 1, 2020 Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker’s Order 45 requires all out of state (and international) travelers entering Massachusetts, specifically including students and returning residents, to quarantine for 14 days or produce a negative COVID-19 rest result from a test administered within 72 hours prior to arrival in the Commonwealth. If results from a test taken within 72 hours of arrival are not obtained by the time of arrival, the traveler must quarantine until the negative result is received.

Anyone not meeting one of the exemptions below is also required to complete a Travel Form. Failure to comply with this order may result in a $500 fine per day. Instituting a fine is a notable departure from the Commonwealth’s prior approach to quarantine, which was described as an “instruction” and not included in any executive orders.

Travelers from “low risk” states are exempt from these requirements. A state is considered low risk if it has an average of fewer than six daily cases per 100,000 people and a positive test rate below 5%, both measured as a seven-day rolling average. As of July 21, the only low risk states are: Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

There are a couple of other exemptions (commuters, etc.).

I think it’s awesome that Massachusetts named that order “Order 45”. That has to be getting ol’ 45’s goat!

A lot of tourists are being turned in by hotel staff, and good on them. But there was one case at a condominium complex in Hawaii Kai, a moderately upscale neighborhood, where a resident’s mother had flown in from California. She violated the quarantine by going out every day, and the resident’s neighbors reported her. Good on them, but it must be kind of awkward now at the tenants meetings.

And for those of you who were wondering, this is one of the reasons why hackers are trying to break into medical companies and view COVID research.

Unrelated:
Melbourne.vic.australia has gone from no local cases to ~400 per day, after it escaped from a quarantine centre 3 weeks ago.

Oops.

Is one of these the fact one has antibodies for Covid?

North Korea declares emergency over first reported COVID-19 case

Oh my god! Tell me it isn’t true!

That’s not on the list, but if you have a negative Covid test within 72 hours prior to arrival you don’t have to quarantine.
