I LOVE IT!
That’s pretty clever.
Randall Munroe is always amazing.
How are American rural areas doing in general these days? How many people living in those areas are still able to personally look around them and shrug at the news coming from elsewhere?
And how are things going on the farming front? Any shortages of fruit or vegetables coming up in the next month or few?
Best tracking tool for that I can find is the Covid Urban Rural Explorer. It tracks by overall U.S. metro and non-metro. You can highlight county by county both for cases and deaths per million. You can also highlight only non-metro and highlight by rates.
Metro dropping but still ahead in cases while non-metro case numbers are pretty stable and non-metro getting near neck and neck for deaths per million.
Non-metro areas with high rates are concentrated in the south and some in the west. Most of the rest of non-metro America is either low-medium or high-medium.
20,024,265 total cases
733,995 dead
12,898,238 recovered
In the US:
5,199,444 total cases
165,617 dead
2,664,701 recovered
Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:
On 6 August the world hit 19,000,0000 total cases; as expected, today that number was above 20,000,000. 21,000,000 will happen on Wednesday 12 August and by next Sunday 16 August there will be more than 22,000,000 total cases worldwide. Every 4 days = 1,000,000+ new cases right now.
In Texas, you can see rural counties with large meat-processing facilities or possibly prisons.
The USA can proudly claim 26% of the world’s cases, and 22% of the world’s dead.
Also Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Arkansa, Nebraska …
I’m sure, but when I look at maps of Nebraska, I can’t be like “Oh, that’s the feedlot we drive by on the way to Amarillo!” I mean, I assume it’s true there, too.
Oh, trust me, that is here in spades. More cattle than people in many places. Just a few packing plants in a few counties brought it all to a screeching halt.
Oops, I’m in Nebraska, the “Good Life”, as our license plates used to say. Now it is “Nebraska Nice”. Both are true.
California’s public health director resigns amid coronavirus test data glitch

Dr. Sonia Angell’s departure comes amid news that technical issues caused California’s coronavirus cases to be undercounted.
She’s not alone:
The more if this I see, the less I beleive the figures on infections and especially deaths - the curves are increasingly following different profiles, and this is even when you compare to other countries.
For example, Brazil has significant logistical issues with reporting in a timely manner, but their population proflie if significantly younger than the US.
So the question is, why does the US appear to have very much lower deaths per million infections?
I’m sure some will answer that US health systems are much better - I am not buying it, previous claims centred around US infections over the last couple of months have been to younger people, but they ain’t younger than the profile of Brazil’s population.
Florida death rate is falling as fast as it rose - simply not believable because that state does not have an utterly differant virus to everywhere else, and that is what it would take since the curve is so very different.
So, a shit ton of maskholes from the stupid parts of the state invaded Portland this weekend to come see another stupid fucking maskhole religious nut from out of state spew virus and godstuff at them. Thanks a fucking lot, you dickholes, and also thanks SO MUCH to our useless fucking cops who didn’t tear gas or pepper spray them–who didn’t even come tell them to put their fucking masks on to comply with the statewide ordinances. Nope, according to PPB this is a PERFECTLY FINE AND LEGAL GATHERING. Go forth and kill each other, you assholes.
It’s been 6 months + since COVID-19 broke. We have learned a little bit. "Gathering outside at the waterfront’ is not going to be a problem.
No masks, no social distancing, lots and lots of face to face close talking, singing, etc. And most of these maskholes hail from the stupid counties where they don’t observe any sort of pandemic protocols in their regular lives either. That gathering is WAY over the limits of permitted religious gatherings and should have been shut down if the participants continued to refuse to mask up. They come here, blow virus all over us then go back home, trailing infection all the way. Fuck the lot of them.
Then why is gathering at the Federal Courthouse after dusk? Or being part of the Wall of Moms?
Watching Anderson Cooper on CNN, he had a guest, Dr. Monica Gandhi, who is doing research that suggests that wearing a mask does have a benefit to the wearer. Not that it will necessarily protect you from getting the virus, but minimize the viral load that your receive making it more likely that you have mild or no symptoms.
This message really needs to be spread to the masses.
