Could Family Guy return?

NEWSWEEK ARTICLE

EXCERPTS:

I doubt it will happen, but if it does, it is a great boon to all those shows that get discovered too late. If the oft abused family guy can make a comeback, then I think we may see other cult type shows go to cable instead of cancellation. It has happened before, but never to the tune of 1 million per night.

The article also says we will soon see the unreleased episode.

Cable tv may be destroying network prime time programming, but it is really offering some great alternatives!

I always thought Family Guy was great. It’s probably a little to racy to have on broadcast TV, even Fox. That’s why I think Adult Swim is perfect for it. If they ever get tired of it, I’m sure Comedy Central will jump all over it. They could have an adult block of cartoons featuring Family Guy, South Park, Duckman, and The Critic (although the last one is probably getting a little dated).

You can see it on the Season Two DVD. It’ll be interesting to see what gets cut if it airs.

Hmmm. Futurama is the lead-in to Family Guy. I wonder how it’s doing in the ratings.

Family Guy is on DVD? Holy crap!

goes looking

I’m very happy to hear that it’s so popular on Cartoon Network. I had no idea.

I always loved Family Guy and I’m really psyched to hear that it’s getting a million viewers a night on Adult Swim. Yeah, get out and get the DVDs, they’re excellent.

Has Season 2 been released in the US?

Either way, I’ll just wait for it to air. I am rather cheap.

And everything else on Cartoon Network seems to remain intact.

I think the only permanent change was one made on the DVD as well (Bin Laden getting through security at the airport). I could be wrong on this.

Seasons 1 and 2 were released as a set in the US.

OK, which ep is “the unreleased ep” from season 2? Also, in which ep was the bin Laden scene?

I dunno, I always find references to Scent of a Woman refreshing.

But yeah, this is thrilling news. I never considered Family Guy as “smart” as Futurama, but one crazy non-sequitur after another in rapid fire mode is enough to keep me entertained for about a half hour. The scene where Peter turns the house into a giant puppet ranks among the greatest scenes in animation history.

“Bring me a toolshed, for I am hungry!”

On preview: I believe the Bin Laden bit was in “Road to Rhode Island”, but this is just off the top of my head. The unreleased episode was “When You Wish Upon a Weinstein.”

Yea, the Bin Laden bit was in Road to Rhode Island (I caught it when it aired). IIRC, it went something like this…

Stewie puts his backpack on the X Ray machine, then realizes that the guns, grenades, etc. he’s carrying won’t look good. So he diverts security by singing “The Good Ship Lollypop”, then grabs his bag from the other side of the X-Ray Machine. After he grabs his bag, he says something like “Well, let’s just hope Osama bin Laden doesn’t know any showtunes.”

Cut to the interior of a cave with Osama singing “I hope I get it!”

Slight nitpick, but I believe that he was actually standing in front of the metal detectors/x-ray. (It’s a slight difference, but it’s even stranger/more disturbing/funnier (?) in that he’s already in the airport).

“When You Wish Upon a Weinstein”

Plot: Peter wants Chris to convert to Judiasm in order to get rich. Peter sings the Disney-like “I Need a Jew”. FOX did not air it because they thought it was offensive. Only Peter is offensive, but then again, when isn’t he?

[Lewis Black]I’m gonna repeat that. FOX didn’t air it because they thought it was offensive. FOX! [/LB]

The only time the OBL scene was shown was during the ep’s original airing. It has not been aired since, nor is it on either the Region 1 or 2 (which I have) version of the DVD.

When You Wish Upon a Weinstein is not on the American release DVD.

I have seen it twice in the past year (ho hum) on the Canadian channel Teletoon.

You may be right. I think there was another scene that got cut in that episode. The stewardess comes into the cockpits and the pilots are laying there dead, with knives in them and blood everywhere. The stewardess screams and the pilots start laughing. Not sure on the episode, but I remember the scene.

It will appear on the upcoming third season DVD.

I also read McFarlane and staff and TCF had a long argument about Bin Laden and whether or not he should stay. They decided he shouldn’t, but all were in agreement. (McFarlane almost died on 9/11, but thankfully he was drunk and missed his plane. Sometimes, it’s good to be drunk.)

Back to the topic at hand, is there any chance they will get back together to make more episodes?

Matt Groening says that it’s doing better on Adult Swim than it did on Fox, but Fox was none too happy with the show when it aired, and supposedly Fox has managed to kill any chance of them doing a Futurama movie.

Frankly, I’d be happy if they just made a show called Life With Stewie chronicaling Stewie’s attempts to kill Lois and take over the world.

Oh, and my favorite quote from the show at the moment is when Peter says, “Christmas is that mystical time of the year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feed on the flesh of the living.”

I doubt they will make anymore new episodes. Probably just because I am skeptical.

I do hope Cartoon Network produces some new shows to go along with the two Fox rejects. The other Adult Swim stuff is ridiculous. Most of it hinges on nostalgia.
