This year is going to be one big asterisk.
The rest of the current Dashboard Confessional / Get Up Kids tour is postponed as well, but all I hope for is that it’s rescheduled at a time when I’m not on vacation. Combined, I’ve missed these bands around 5 times due to either having already made plans or my family making plans I didn’t want to miss after I bought tickets.
FIRST Robotics Competition championships cancelled at Houston and Detroit. Around 800 high school teams in two events. This was supposed to be the culmination of 7 weekends of competitions with around 150 local competitions all over the world. The first two weekends were run (except for the Chinese events); before the third weekend the most of the rest were “postponed” or “suspended”.
Most events were cancelled prior to teams arriving, but one team traveled from California to St Louis to compete, only to find when they got there that event was cancelled. (They did get good BBQ before returning.) Another event was canceled after the Drive Team meeting on the field (sort of a repeating the rules and how to get on/off the field).
That moaning your heard this week was 91,000 teens, 25,000 mentors, plus parents and volunteers after they heard the news.
It’s getting there.
Statewide K-12 school closure in Oregon.
In Virginia, the Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and Prince William County schools are closed, as well as others downstate.
The Smithsonian is closing, including the National Zoo
Here’s a list of nearly 90 colleges and universities that are closing, going to remote learning, or some combination of the two. And that list doesn’t include at least two universities that I know of that are closing/going remote.
Yes, that list includes nothing in Oregon, no community colleges, and none of the liberal arts colleges I know about. All were posted prior to the date/time stamp on that article.
ETA: Add Bryn Mawr to the list.
Yeah, things are changing very fast.
Given the number of colleges and universities in the U.S., it’s probably pointless to try to keep up with that category. If someone needs to know about a particular college or university, they can check the website.
In addition to the NCAA basketball tournaments, the NCAA hockey tournament was cancelled. And my alma mater’s team was having one of its better years, so I’m a little annoyed.
Lots of TV shows are going forward without studio audiences. Probably too many to list.
The Masters is postponed. Not even go to try it without a crowd.
And Bahrain and Vietnam too. Shame for Vietnam as it would have been the inaugural event. They are saying that they will try and run the races later in the year, but I don’t see that happening. The logistics of the whole F1 season are complicated enough already without trying to shoehorn extra races in.
Yeah, just my luck. I got interested in F1 after stumbling across the series on Netflix. I was looking forward to keeping up with a real season.
Louisiana postpones primary election.
Not holding my breath, but hoping this could lead to nation-wide mail-in voting.
Many places are postponing jury trials.
Also, Denver Public Schools is shutting down. So, too, with the LA County school district.
Kansas City area schools closed, St Patrick’s Day Parade cancelled, Snake Saturday Parade cancelled.
Went to Captain D’s for lunch, and I was the only person in line. Normally a 5-20 minute wait for food - they handed it to me as I was sitting down in the waiting area.
Pretty much all of Denmark.
Pentagon, White House, and Congress are all closed to the public.
Canadian Parliament has suspended operations.
The Japanese Street Festival that coincides with the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC has been postponed. This was their 60th year so they say they are still planning to hold it at some time in the future. Given that it is difficult to time it to coincide with when the Cherry trees bloom and at times no flowering trees are visible during the festival, I think a postponement will not be a terrible thing, but it does lose its luster by not being in the spring.
