Have you ever visited or used CL as a way to meet people?
Whether it be for friendship, fb, fwb, bf/gf?
I have, but no longer go there, for I realized it would be more aptly named Dregslist…
I met a lot of people on there and luckily didn’t run into any murderers, but dayumm, some of the men on there are just plain dirty! I cannot even go there anymore without being completely grossed out or turned off by what men post on there.
I haven’t used it to meet people, but I go sometimes to look for laughs. I used to read the Best of Craigslist, which is a collection of funny CL ads nationwide. After discovering that, I checked the local personals to see if there were any funny, witty ads.
My very first time, I saw a missed connection ad that said (paraphrasing) “A few weeks ago I posted an ad saying I would be at the wal-mart dressing room and I wanted a guy to come in, have anonymous sex with me and leave without saying a word. To whoever answered that ad, please get in contact with me as soon as possible, I’m pregnant.”
That was my first time looking at CL personals and I was hooked. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ve seen a funny one since, but I still skim them about once a month. Maybe someday that child will grow up and follow in mama’s footsteps so I can follow it’s exploits through CL too.
To get back on the original subject, I have wandered over to the m4w posts just to see what they were like. I can’t remember exactly, but I believe I made a mental note to never go there for any reason again for the rest of my life. It’s basically just dick pics isn’t it?
Craigslist has a terrible signal-to-noise problem, but I’ve met several nice, clean, fun people through there.
You’ll get a lot lot lot of obnoxious, creepy, or dumb-as-a-post responses (and a lot lot lot of spam), but it’s really not very difficult to sift through. I’ve posted on there a handful of times over the years. Getting past the noise, I’ve found some extremely compatible folks through there.
I met my husband because I posted a personal on CL. In fact, before I met him I met several other very nice men and had several wonderful dates because of ads I posted. I never answered any ads, I always posted my own. This was in 2007.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only person who likes to laugh at (bad) personal ads
In pursuit of which, I more than occasionally see variations of “looking for someone to have sex with me for money. No prostitutes.”
From what I’ve seen, they appear to mostly be married men looking for other men to give them BJs, and of course they post pictures of their erect penises. Or someone’s, anyway.
Craigslist is good for free firewood and tires, but not too much else from my experience. And as you would expect, free tires are about worth what you pay for them.
But every now and then you score the 36" Toshiba TV that works perfect! (got it out in my garage!)
Really? At the very least I’d think you’d find a Nigerian prince, because every time I put up a room for rent about 20 of them answer.
It’s one of my guilty pleasures, too.
Free tires are useful for many things other than putting them on your car.
I guess I always thought they were like Adult Friend Finder and would be limited to that sort of “dating.”
This wasn’t in the personals but a fellow kept advertising several times a week for a woman to come live with him, rent free, in exchange for housekeeping and, uh, “wifely” duties. I suspect takers were few and far between.
But they actually have standards - and ratings. Maybe you don’t get a complete medical history and blood work up, but it’s something. CL is more like going outside your species - and not in a good way.
I responded to a W4M ad once and actually went on a date with the woman who posted the ad.
We did not have sex. We had a great date and great conversation. She was a very nice normal person. She was possibly a little too trusting, but not naive. She claimed to be too broke for a dating site and really bored on a long weekend. And since she lived in a city I was only visiting, nothing developed after that date.
So it is possible to have a non-freaky encounter out of craigs list.
He probably got tons of responses, though.
I know someone who recently tried to sell a car on CR but only attacted the interest of numerous hookers and some riceboys.
Speaking of riceboys…When I had use for CL personals, they were sometimes quite helpful. I would literally place ads for Asian guys and would get quite an assortment and the ones I hand picked quite hit the spot. Oh Drew, how I miss thee…
I found through interacting with hundreds of people on CL (most by online chatting) that women have much better luck with ads. If a woman places an ad, she will get “real” responders, whereas if men place ads, they get mostly spam. And of course the ratio of men looking for sex to women is 100:1. I rarely responded to ads, I always placed them.
Hey baby [wink]
[kidding - if i didn’t, someone would ]
The Craigslist in my brother’s town had a person advertising an autographed Billy Idol LP for $200, and updated it every day. Someone finally made a post titled, “Nobody wants it.” I’m tempted to do that with the person who’s advertising a 1921 yearbook from a local high school.
One of my Facebook friends said that he advertised a dining room set, and got several responders that he knew were fake, because who’s going to pay $10,000 to ship a $400 set of furniture overseas? He never did find a buyer.
