Crap - I think my hair is resistant to bleaching. Advice please!

Right now I’m bleaching a few strands of my hair so I can highlight them red. I got the L’Oreal “Chunking” kit, followed all instructions, etc, etc. Now, my hair is naturally black. I haven’t dyed it in years. It said on the instructions that black hair would need at least an hour to lighten to an orangey shade (which is needed in order for the highlight colour to show up). Well, I’ve had this crap on my hair for almost an hour and it has .barely. turned brown. So I have a few questions hopefully the hair experts here can answer:

-What is the maximum time I can leave the bleaching solution on? It didn’t say anything in the instructions, it just gave estimated developing times.

-If I leave it on a long time, will it destroy my hair?

Thanks for any advice.

It’s been about 2 hours now…it’s starting to look more orangey. Should I leave it on longer or will it fry my hair? Any advice? Anyone?

The longer you leave the bleach on, the more brittle your hair gets. If you have naturally dark hair, you generally have to leave it on longer than the bottle says… potentially a lot longer.

Fried hair is the price of fashion. Shampoo and bleach are the only two reasons for the existence of hair conditioner.

Thanks. Hmmm. I think I’m going to go rinse it now. The highlights won’t be as bold as on the box, but I’ll still be able to see them. I’d rather have that then lose chunks of crispy hair.
