creating a contact list with photos

I’ve volunteered to create a contact list for my son’s school, with photos of the kids and parents next to their names (so we can learn who everyone is). Just looking for suggestions on the best way to do this.

Sans other ideas, will most likely use MS Word or Excel (assuming photos can be added to excel, haven’t tried). Is this the best approach, or are there better options for this sort of thing?

Yes, you can add pictures to Excel: just copy and paste a picture from a suitable source into a cell. After you do that, you may need to adjust the row height and column width to display the picture correctly.

it could be developed over a database that stores the information and the image, which allows for online updates via an admin panel.

the whole thing could be password protected, of course - both to view and/or update.

Out of my skill range. Trying to keep this simple. I’ve done basic websites but in this case I’ll stick with a document. Parents can print it out and keep at home, I don’t foresee having to update it that often. Maybe twice a year. Once the doc is done changes should be fairly easy.

That said, I’m having a tough time getting Excel to do what I want. Organizing a simple phone list is easy, but I need to group multiple lines of information. Need to group parent contact with the child’s info, so 1 kid can have 3 or 4 adult names and ph#s associated with them. Plus I don’t just want family pics thrown in, I want their specific pics linked to their block of information, all centering around the child.

So it’d be:

KID
class designation
parent name 1, contact info
parent name 2, contact info
family photo with caption

And then I’d be able to sort by what class they are in, then alphabetically within the class.

Sounding more and more like I need a database program that Office just doesn’t have. (FYI this is MS Office 2008 for Mac). For bloatware, it sure seems to be missing this ability. =)

Is there any way for Excel to handle this? If not, just gotta suck it up and do it manually in Word. Eegads. What have I volunteered for?

OK bumping this. I thought I’d have it figured out by now, but no luck.

Adding a pic to excel, and the pic lives in a cell (cell would be resized to fit the pic), I can’t figure it out. And without that 1 step, I can’t keep it grouped with the contact info.

Is this doable at all?
