We’d be more of a laughing stock if creationists were successful at keeping discussion of evolution and natural selection out of biology classes, but with a very limited set of exceptions they haven’t. Ignorance is rampant, but it’s hardly an American creation.

Then they would have to explain why God made all those things that appear to be fossilized dinosaur bones. One creationist did once provide such an explanation, one impossible to disprove, but which I think most religious believers would find very hard to swallow. It’s based on the presumption that Adam, though never born of woman, had a navel, the newly-created trees had growth rings, and just as every living thing God made was an apparent relic of earlier stages of growth that never occurred, so the fossils are relics of stages of evolution that never occurred; God wasn’t trying to fool us, he was just trying to save time.

Christian Fundamentalism is an American baby. As a movement it started with New Jersey Presbyterians and then branched out. The fundamentalist identity solidified with the publication of The Fundamentals in the early twentieth century by the Los Angeles Bible Institute. It became highly politicized in the 70s with Falwell’s Moral Majority.
Yeah, we have Fundamentalists up here, too - but it really is due to American influence.

On campus once, some years ago, there were booths set up all about the student union outside area. One of the booths was for some creationist group. They were claiming, along with a bunch of other nonsense, that there never were any dinosaurs. The bones that evil scientists were claiming to be dinosaurs were actually bones of animals that “swelled up” from all the water during the Great Flood.

I don’t think Ned was involved, but Orlando has The Holy Land Experience. According to the Wikipedia link, it was started by a group called Zion’s Hope. It’s just north of Universal Studios, which I go to often, but I didn’t know it was there until about a year ago.
