Amen. As someone who has been a regular for over 10 years, I grow weary of listening to people who wander in and complain about how horrible it is. Leave, stay, whatever. But don’t presume to lecture us… it’s disrespectful, sophomoric, and reveals your inexperience.
Moderating a board is a horrible and thankless job because no matter what decisions those folks make, they get shit flung at them. I’ve been on message boards that aren’t moderated or are moderated poorly, and they don’t function well at all. Spend a year trying to interact someplace like that, and then come back and tell us how much the SMDB mods suck.
Well, at least this thread was good for something. That is, disemvowel. Of course.
I have to say I like the idea of disemvowelment, and I think the mods should use it here. When a poster steps over the line (the kind of infraction that gets a “knock it off” as opposed to an official warning) I think the offending message – maybe even all the poster’s messages in that thread – should be disemvowled as an example and warning.

The Straight Dope has several forums, each one operates a little differently based upon the purpose of the individual forum. Cecil’s Columns, for instance, is supposed to be about discussing the columns written by Cecil, and posted on the main site (there’s a site attached to this board?). Sometimes the discussion will turn into a debate, and when that happens the thread gets shifted to Great Debates, even though the original topic was a Cecil column.
MIPSIMS is the forum for general discussion of social activity - “Hi, how are you? I need a hug.” etc.
ATMB is supposed to be discussion of the board itself. Now, your original thread I could see justification for being in MPSIMS rather than ATMB, but I guess I can see why it was moved here. But ATMB runs a bit tighter.
So, as has already been stated, you originally posted in August of last year, and got answers to the questions (should I pay for membership? What does it get me?) You also got some friendly banter, and seemed to enjoy the exchange. That conversation ended in August. Your next post in February was to say that the shine has worn off the forum.
You dug up a 5 and 1/2 month old thread, which admittedly you were answering your own question, but it was an old thread, and some of our forums are more sensitive to “zombies” than others. ATMB is one of the more sensitive ones. And it wasn’t just that you expressed dissatisfaction, your comment came off as saying that you weren’t going to stay here. That might not have been your intent, but that seems to be how it was perceived.
Anyway, if you want to stay, hang around and enjoy yourself. If you don’t like it here, then don’t torture yourself by staying here. The choice is yours, nobody is running you off, just wishing you to have the best experience you can.
