Critique This Artwork (Not Mine)

An old lady around my small town likes to paint, and while most of her work is crap, I actually think this piece is pretty good. What say you?

As an ordinary fella, not an art expert or critic, I like it too. It’s evocative of a certain kind of experience and place, it is expressed economically. It is pretty straightforward and not complex, so I suppose for those kinds of reasons it is likeable rather than good/great art.

If you like it, then it’s good. For you. For me, the good part is the way the truck is cut off halfway back by some Not-really-thick-enough underbrush. That part is charming in the way children’s art is charming.

The sky, the foliage. the weathered wood are all done in standard untrained amateur style.

Art is subjective. If you like it, that’s all that matters.

I think it shows potential, and if she continues in that style she’ll create some genuinely good stuff sooner rather than later. Right now it feels like someone who is still feeling their way.

Has a flat, cartoonish quality that complements the subject well. I could see Mr. Natural and Flakey Foont riding in that car.

Did you ask the lady if you could subject her work to chastisement by Dopers?

She has a nice level of detail in that and I also like the color palette. It’s actually kind of interesting that it does have a flat look but tons of detail at the same time.

No, but I’m going to assume that she won’t mind.

That’s always a smart strategy.
