Ok,** Crunchy ** I’m willing to place my faith that THIS is the Cubs’ year up for a friendly series of wagers.
Number One-The Cubs will outrank the Cardinals at year’s end.
Number Two-The Cubs will make the playoffs.
Number Three-The Cubs will make the World Series this year.
Number Four-The Cubs will FINALLY win the World Series.
So ** Crunchy,** or ** Assclown of Evil, ** want to make a wager? Let’s make this interesting and let the SDMB decide what are prizes/punishments are going to be.
I will not bet on points one and two, as that is definitely possible. Hell, the Cubs managed to make the playoffs in '98, no reason they can’t do it again especially with Kerry Wood back in the starting rotation.
However, I will bet on points 3 and 4. The Cubs will not make, and therefore will not win, the World Series.
I’m all for letting the Dopers pick the bet, within reason of course.
well, to start with I think the loser should forever have to acknowledge that their baseball knowledge is nothing compared to that of the winner. the loser (let’s just call the loser “Crunchy Frog” from here on in, for clarity’s sake) should freely and cheerfully admit that the winner (hardygrrl, ibid.) is their superior in all things baseball. And Crunchy should volunteer this information every time the topic of baseball comes up-- e.g. “You’re right, White Lightning, the Red Sox certainly will win the upcoming 2003 World Series, but you’ve also gotta remember that whatever hardygrrl’s opinion is on this matter, it is surely worth more than mine.”
Not as the complete wager, just as a sort of inherent stakes to the bet. If you like.
Well, that’s a suggestion, but I don’t see how this affects one’s baseball knowledge. Besides which, I refuse to admit that hardygrrl may know more about the Cardinals, Stan Musial, Ozzie Smith, Rogers Horsnby, etc.
Hell, I wonder if hardygrrl would even know who Rube Waddell was. (No, he wasn’t a Cardinal.)
Besdies, WL, you seem to be a Red Sox fan and just looking to vent your frustration on a fan of a team that’s won a World Series or 9.
Well, she should know they all started their careers after the last Cubs WS champs… heck, I think the RED SOX have won the Series like 4 times since the Cubs - and the Yankess won ALL theirs - then again, when the Cubs won, it was, what, WS #4?
Given that both the Red Sox and the Cubs are currently in first place, one might assume there would be some possibility of a Bosox/Cubbies World Series.
Which would mean that one of those two teams would have to win.
Now, we know this outcome would violate the Fundamental Laws That Govern The Universe, much like exceeding the speed of light. (And anyone who does not believe this did not watch game six of the 1986 World Series.)
Therefore, I will make a bet:
In the unlikely event of a Red Sox/Cubs World Series, a giant asteriod will smash into the Earth and thus prevent either team from winning.
**Number One-The Cubs will outrank the Cardinals at year’s end.
Number Two-The Cubs will make the playoffs.
Number Three-The Cubs will make the World Series this year.
Number Four-The Cubs will FINALLY win the World Series.**
Is there going to be a different bet for each of these? Because the last three are possible (theoretically) even if I win Number One and the Cards finish with a better record.
What if we split? I can win #1, 3 and 4, but still lose the bet on #2. Or I can lose the bet on #1&2, but still win #3&4. Any suggestions then?
I’m routing for you Crunchy of course all four will be false. St Louis will make the wild card then beat the cubs in the NL pennant and then take the World Series in six from the Twins. World peace and a new labor agreement will be in place the day after.
As for what the bets are for how about having to wear the cap of the opposing team next season, or part there of depending on how correct each of you is. I hope your medical insurance is paid up
Thanks Britt, but for all four to be false, the Cubs will have to be the wild card team, as the Cards repeat as NL Central champs.

hardygrrl’s is Chicago and I’m in St. Louis. There’s no way to verify that either is holding up their end of the bet. And I’ll be up front about it right now and admit I would NOT wear a Cubs hat in favor of my McGwire cap.
Especially in St Louis.
At a Cards game.

So did I.
[sub]For those wondering, Cards beat the Cubs 6-2 thanks to McGwire’s 3-run homer and Edmonds’ 2-run shot.
Sosa went yard also, but his only counted for 1.[/sub]
Hmm perhaps a rule interpritation is called for now where is the umpire. The endd of the year means well theend of the year winning in the regular seanson just doesn’t do it IMHO.
Verification is easily obtained via the medical records, given that this does not appear to be an option how about a signed ball per question (you have to get them from cubs plays she from the Cardinals), though this could get expensive.
Crunchy also forgot to mention a homer by Eric Young for the cubs.
Well, I would, since I would pretty much blend in during a Cubs/Cards game. During those series, we get a lot of Cb fans here. The problem would be by next year I have no idea if I’ll get tickets for those games or be able to work it around my work schedule.
How about we think of something a little more immediate?
And as for the autographed balls - I collect autographed balls, Britt, I can’t bear to part with them once I get one.
