Culture shock and reunion adventures: it's the MMP!

American Football is easier to watch at home on TV. When I was in grade school, I played trombone in a marching band. We would often play during halftime at the Merchant Marine Acedemy football games. I was so bored I couldn’t wait til we got up and played and finished so I could get out of there. I much prefer Baseball.

Mornin’ all!

Here I am at work on a Saturday. Ugh. Gotta get this dang tree balanced, and I don’t have enough room for the counterweights… sigh.

More later…

Back home again - didja miss me? We ran to the Ace Hardware in Leonardtown for some brass screws and I don’t know what else for boat stuff. Then we went to Abell’s Diner in Clements for breakfast - the place is a borderline dump, the food is OK, but it’s fairly cheap and it’s close to home. Plus **FCD ** likes it, so we went. Next stop was the convenience center where we disposed of our trash and our recycling.

When we got home, I washed out the trash cans, and splashed some bleach in to them. They’re sitting out in the driveway airing. Then I dragged the sprinkler up to my very wilted butterfly bush - I hope it’s not dead. It’s been so long since we had rain…

I just checked on my kiln - temp is down to the middle 700s - at this rate, I should be able to open the lid in just a few more hours. I wait till it’s down to 300. That’ll give me my first peek. Here’s hoping it’s not a disaster inside. Firsts are always nerve-wracking.

We may or may not make it to the boat today - depends on how much my sweetie gets done. I’m going to finish the last of my daily surfing, then go clean up my studio. It’s pretty messy and in need of arranging. Always something.

Morning all! I’m up and doing laundry before work. It is supposed to be hot this weekend, guess I am lucky I am working.

FCM, of course I missed you!

Good morning all. I’m finally up and about, but frankly, I could sleep some more.

I have my go juice sitting in front of me, however, so I should fully wake up soon.

Thanks everyone for the continued good wishes for my mother. I was going to call her last night, but I figured I’d let her get some rest. I’ll give her a call today, though.

Last night the hubby and I went to a double-header softball game. His company was playing a couple of other companies. Hubby’s company lost. They seemed to have all kinds of problems fielding last night. Hubby was going to play on the team, originally, but screwed up his shoulder at the first practice, so he decided not to play.

Tonight’s plans call for some socializing with some friends. We’re just going to kick back and watch movies. Tomorrow, we’re going out on the boat with some friends to ski and wakeboard. The weather here is beautiful, so it’ll be nice.

kai, I don’t understand why people do mean things like that. If it was one or two plants, I’d suspect an animal of some kind; but I’m inclined to think it was a species of human jerk that did that to your flowers.

I forgot to mention up-thread that I love my front loader washer and dryer. I haven’t had any issues with stinky washing machine though. I love the fact that I can do my laundry in one half to one third the time it used to take me. I also love the fact that I no longer have unbalanced wash loads. I used to hate dashing up the stairs because I’d hear the KER-THUMP, KER-THUMP, KER-THUMP of the washing machine when it was on spin cycle and not loaded JUST RIIIIIIIIIGHT.

Hubby has to go to his mother’s house today to help her out with her computer. He’s also going to help her with her TV. I plan to do some yard work and straighten the house out. We’d like to mow our front lawn, but our dumbass neighbors erected their tent on the lawn. Our lots are weird and we end up sort of sharing a front lawn. At any rate, we can’t mow until the tent is down. Why they couldn’t erect the stupid tent in their big back yard is totally beyond me. We finally had the front lawn coming in nice and now they’re killing a patch by having this stupid tent up.

FCM, I’m sure your pottery will turn out lovely. You made it after all!

Well, off to cruise the Dope for a bit.

I’m back!!! Bro and kids were supposed to be here this afternoon, but their plans have changed, so they won’t be here till next weekend. Actually a good thing since I really wanted to have a lower-stress weekend and really need to do some major clean-up and organization and need to do some work too. Plus, I really really really wanted to re-grout the bathtub, which I can’t do when people are here. So, I’ll be having an extra-exciting weekend!!!

Also, I just finished watching the first season of MI-5 (Spooks for those of you in the UK) and just saw that season 2 is being held for me at the library. So I’m going to go pick that up and have a film festival while I’m sorting out some paper stuff and organizing CDs.

I can hardly wait to see the results of your glazing, FCM! (Wish I had the talent to do stuff like that…)

GT

My fingers are crossed for you fcm, I hope your work comes out of the kiln all fabulous! And I don’t blame you for not doing the bilge either, that is not a fun job! Ick!

swampy you are in my thoughts. The saying goodbye part is always rough, but the remembering the good times part after is healing. The “anonymous” beer donation is very thoughtful, you are a good ol’ bear.

I’m up too, it’s 9:39 by my computer clock, but I feel a nap coming on as soon as my morning meds hit. I am looking forward to having skiffman home, but it’s gonna take some getting used to having him back in my bed! He is both a bed and cover hog, he likes it warm, I prefer it cool, so I need to get the extra blankets out for his side of the bed. The skipper called at 9:00 and skiffman just left with him. They are gonna borrow Phil’s skiff (like you all know Phil, ha!) since he has hung it up for the season. Skipper is planning on going until September 20th, to try to catch the late run of reds.

I really wanted to believe that a dog dug up my flower bed, but after I replanted everything salvageable, it was all dug up again, plants strewn about the yard. One linaria, rootball included, was laid on the edge of another bed, so I am fairly certain that it was human. :mad: There is a pack of rug rats that have been running around that area, but I don’t think it was them. It seems far more “prankster-ish” to me. Last year two women were convicted of robbing gardens of both plants and garden art, and then there is the bored teenage contingent to consider. I am just not getting all het up about it, my biggest loss were the two huge yellow foxglove, as the foxglove in the other bed closer to the house are purple and I was planning to put some of each in both beds next year, and I can always get more from the nursery in the Spring. It’s been so cold and rainy that nothing has done outstandingly well, although I tried snapdragons this year, the white and yellow have bloomed nicely, but the red is just beginning to look like it’s gonna bloom. I really want the red to bloom! My hanging baskets all drowned…there is always next year. And it’s almost bulb planting time! I love planting bulbs, and I keep the pictures from the bulb bags so that when it’s forty below and white out conditions I can look at what I planted and imagine how pretty it’s all gonna be.

It’s raining hard, so I don’t think we will be taking the dogs to the beach. I promised the kids swedish meatballs so I guess I am gonna have to cook today. Maybe fried chicken for tomorrow, and then school begins on Monday!!!

Okay, now I am gonna read the Dope for a bit before I lie (lay?) back down with a book. I will not whine about my aches and pains for at least another month…getting old bites. channeling the Red Stripe beer man Boo getting old! Yay school starting!

The mourning and memorializing are all done now. The “anonymous” beer donation was much appreciated and consumed. Strange how it was filled with the very beer Bob and Judy were so fond of. Kinda like somebody knew that. :smiley: Much rememberin’, laughter and smiles occured, so it was good. There was also a ton o’ eats. There were several casseroles in those disposable aluminum pans that were not eaten. Not because they were yuck, just because there was so much. They were wondering what to do with it all since none of the family live around here and so I suggested the local rescue mission. Thus, I was loaded down with stuff to take by there. Stuff like that is always much appreciated at the mission cause they do what they do mostly off of donations. So, that was a good thing, too.

Now I need to turn my attention to packing for Miami. I did mention I gotta go to Miami tomorrow for a couple days because of work, right? I don’t like Miami all that much. It’s skeery. People drive nuts there. I’m driving down to Tallahassee, FL and take a commuter flight to Miami. Not only is that an easier way to get there, it’s cheaper, so TPTB like me for doing that. Still I gotta get a rental in Miami and :eek: actually drive in Miami. :eek:

Hi, all, sounds like everyone has been busy.

Taters, more thoughts and prayers headed your mom’s way.

Swampy, that anonymous donation will be greatly appreciated, I’m sure.

kai, I hope someday I can see this gorgeous place you live. Even if your torn-up flowers prove that human obnoxiousness knows no borders. :frowning:

FCM, I look forward to a full report – with pictures! – of the kiln results!

I’ve been tearing my hair out over some work. A firm I’d been doing a bit of work for went out of business a couple months ago (long story made short: Guy who founded and ran it successfully for 30 years died a year ago, person he left it to ran it into the ground in one short year; even though those who could have run it perfectly fine for him were begging him to just go home and they’d send him a check every two weeks, nooo, he had to do it personally – so now he has nothing left, ha! serves him right!), but just before it died the office manager recommended me to someone else, who contacted me last week to help her out with a big contract. Transcribing some electronic files of committee meetings. Can anyone say GIGO? Crap-ass recordings, a whole room full of unidentified people all trying to talk at the same time, when I can even hear them, that is, since most of them can’t be arsed to be anywhere near a microphone. I’m just identifying them as “Male Voice,” “Female Voice,” and using “(inaudible)” about ten times more than I like to. But hey, if they can’t even restrict themselves to one person talking at a time, or grasp the simple concept that if they’re not close enough to a microphone to be audibly recorded, their words of wisdom will never make it to print, I am not going to rip my hair out trying to turn their sow’s ear into a silk purse. Aargh!

So it turned what promised to be a lazy Saturday into a hair-pulling Saturday. I’m just glad I’m halfway done with the crappy thing already; I plan to finish it before the day is done so that I don’t completely lose my mind.

Papa T. took the dogs to the beach this morning, and they met Rusty’s identical (albeit younger) twin! In fact, Ace’s person actually thought Rusty was Ace a time or two. I’m sorry I missed it. Two brainless redheaded golden retrievers running around the beach at the same time? Why wasn’t I there with my camera?

And last but not least, can someone refresh me again on what the code to line through text is?

Soooo tired. I have no idea what time it is. I’m not sure what day it is. :slight_smile: Neither Roomie nor I managed to sleep on the flight, but we got a short nap in when we finally were able to check into our hotel. At best guess, we’ve had a three-hour nap in the last thirty-six or so. Here’s some pictures. More when I can remember my name. :slight_smile:

Back from the marina - it was doggone hot out there! We didn’t get a whole lot done, but there was some progress. FCD got his power panel up. I spliced eyes in a couple of dock lines. I did some cleaning in the cabin, and we took a bunch of crap and trash home. And now I’m all showered and cooled and relaxing.

I opened the kiln, to a bit of dismay. Everything on the top shelf is darkish and brownish. Even the bowl that was supposed to be purple and ivory! So I either went too hot or too fast or both. We shall see what the two other shelves look like when it cools down. But I’m not too hopeful. I fear instead of jewel tones, I’m gonna have all earth tones. Oh well…

Pics tomorrow, I hope.

What a great hotel room, Drae! And cool buildings, too. :smiley:

FCM earth tones are jake. F-aaaaaa-bu-lous even.

Yay Drae made it to Amsterdam! Really jake hotel suite! I think some of those cool buildings might be called churches. Just sayin’.

I’m all packed. I’ve had a dip in the pool. I made a batch of cheese crisps which I will drop off at work tomorrow. They are for a reception to be held for some state legislators on Monday. Since I’m so nice dammit, I agreed to make a batch. I made a salad and have some N.O.T. baking. Soon the grill will be fired up for steaks. Followed by a frolick in the pool and ummm… saying goodbye. :smiley:

Well, I just unloaded the kiln. No jewel tones at all. None. Everything is dark. Few have any hint of color at all. Lesson learned: Use slow glaze, not fast glaze, and glaze to the lower temp.

Unfortunately, there’s not enough time between now and the show to do any more. I don’t expect to sell much. Oh well…

The team from here in Columbus are now the United States Little League Champions! They’ll play for the World title tomorrow. Go Northern!!

Of course, some adults have to make asses of themselves on national television. A coach from one of the teams Northern beat complained about one of Northern’s players wearing his ball cap with the brim off the the side, saying it “disrespected the game.” Asshole didn’t think about maybe asking why the kid wears it that way - turns out he has a shunt in his skull and wears the cap that way so as not to put pressure on it. Way to go, Coach! And thanks for the apology you weren’t man enough to deliver. I hope the people responsible for you having a position around kids rethink that choice.

Did I kill the MMP? :frowning:

Sorry, SCL, it’s pretty much unkillable. Congrats on your team!

Glad to see you check in, Drae. We’ll expect to see daily tours, of course. :smiley:

People aren’t going to know you intended them to be jewel tones, FCM. And dark and earth tones are cool too.

Have a safe trip, swampy. Miami is one of those cities where I prefer to allow others to drive.

I’ve been watching MI-5 season 2 and cleaning out the office. Oh, and I got all my CDs put away.

One more episode and then beddy bye.

GT

You didn’t kill it. I’ve been lurking today, since I’ve been too busy to post.

I did the following things today:

  • Took the wife out to breakfast, which BTW was about the only leisurely activity until I quit for the day;

  • Loaded up the trailer and went to the dump, since we don’t have trash collection;

  • Reloaded the trailer, and took several boxes of stuff to a local church for their yard sale next weekend;

  • Mowed an acre of grass;

  • Helped my tenant farmer clean out the barn he rents from me;

  • Power washed the front of the house;

  • Fixed the tail light on the family truckster;

  • Rewired the trailer from items 2 and 3 to get working lights;

  • After dinner, I did the dishes by hand.

I’m going to bed, dammit. ::yawn::

It’s not dead, it’s just pining for the fjords! I managed to break all the blisters on my hand today. Hopefully it won’t fall off, but if it does I’m getting it fitted with power tools. :smiley:

Drae, interesting paint scheme in your room. It must rock with recreational pharmaceuticals.

FCM, earth tone like the Fairy Chat Mug?

swampy, good luck. Try not to end up on Fark with a Florida tag next to your name.

Have a good night everyone!

It’s been a slow, rainy Saturday. We watched movies and napped, and I opted out of making dinner so we are eating pizza. No beach for the dogs today, but if the rain lets up tomorrow we are going raspberry picking. Raspberries grow very well here, and there are entire hillsides jam packed, and there are more berries than anyone will be able to pick. The salmonberry season has been fantastic, blueberries are best picked after the first frost, along with sourberries. Sourberries are actually a highbush crandberry, and they make a scrumptious catsup which is wonderful on game and rice. Lowbush cranberries and lingonberries are also best after frost.

I suppose I wil be the last post of the night, so I am going to go back to the pizza and the movie. I am pleased that Drae is safely in Amsterdam (I am so jealous, ya gotta love legal weed!) and I am looking forward to updated and photos. fcm isn’t that always the way things go when you try something out for the first time? As long as you don’t mention that they were supposed to be jewel toned no one will be the wiser, and earth tones are, as swampy says, jake! You might want to offer any that don’t sell for us MMP’ers to buy, I can’t wait to see your photos.

swampy take care down in Miami, my parents lived for a very short time in Jacksonville and they hated it and moved back to the Puget Sound area.

I am so sleepy, rainy days do that to me. I’ll see you all tomorrow, peaceful and restful sleep to all.
