Curb Your Enthusiasm 3.03 "The Reunion"

The whole cast is back, and so is Jerry’s apartment!

Can anyone explain what was up with Michael Richards? That was really weird.

Jason was dissing George in front of Larry again, along with complaining about the season finale. That was great.

It will be interesting to see how Larry deals with Meg Ryan.

Thoughts?

Another excellent episode - and interesting to see how and why the Seinfeld reunion is being planned.
Loved Jason complaining about the series finale of Seinfeld…which lets you know they have all heard the complaints many times over the years. Was funny to see Larry David defend the ending several times.

The only thing that didn’t ring true is the President of NBC being miffed about Larry telling him to fuck off and canceling the Seinfeld reunion - I mean, NBC brass are idiots, but can you actually envision they would cancel a ratings blockbuster Seinfeld reunion ($$$$$) because of an insult? Larry could have shopped that show around town and had people kissing his ass to get it.

The Meg Ryan vs. Cheryl subplot is going to be interesting…obviously, Larry will do something to screw this up big time - plus, remember Jason (George) was also throwing out some big names as a potential ex-wife, so it looks like it will turn into a major clusterfuck as to who gets the role in the end.

BTW, Larry’s seats for the Laker’s game; I got those same seats when someone offered me free tickets to see Elton John in that arena…they really are that horrible! I felt like if I leaned forward an inch I would fall hundreds of feet to my death…plus, we could barely see the stage, let alone Elton. Left after about three songs.

I’m not quite sure what you mean about Michael Richards…

What happened was that Larry and Michael went to the same restaurant Larry and Jason had gone to, and it was the one with all of the provocative art on the wall. While Jason and Larry were not fazed by the art, Michael was completely distracted and wasn’t actually listening to Larry when he proposed the reunion. Later on, when he said Larry never asked him, it was because he never heard Larry ask him (altho he had “agreed” - by basically brushing Larry off in the restaurant while mesmerized by the artwork).

Is that what you were referring to?

Yes, but why would someone get so distracted by nude art? It seemed a little weird to me.

Because he’s [del]Kramer[/del] Michael Richards. Maybe they’re going for an arc that has Michael Richards not in his right mind since his famous “incident.”

I enjoyed the tip business because it reminded me of the whole disaster surrounding tipping the captian. The waiter was hilarious when Larry was needling him for info on how much Jason left for a tip.

I’m super disappointed about Meg Ryan being involved in the show at all. She looks so bizarre since her plastic surgery, I really don’t want to have to look at her.

This is the first year we’ve actually had HBO, and it’s very strange to watch one episode at a time. I need more Larry!

The genius of this episode is that while it was ostensibly about talking to the cast members about a reunion show, this episode was actually part of a reunion show. Richards (and all of the cast members) were allowing some Seinfeld aspects to come out, but in a subtle way. Richards was being Richards, but also Kramer-esque by being distracted by the photos and then not remembering what the meeting was about. Tipping issues are all George Costanza. Jerry: “Get together? You’re not a get-together guy!” That line is right out of the series, as was the discussion about the tip-sharing. Classic Seinfeld dialogue. I was completely impressed by the way this was done.

While I’m not going to go as far as the poster did in last week’s thread declaring the show as “the unfunniest thing I’ve ever seen,” I actually did not love this episode. I thought it was kind of clunky. I liked Larry with Jerry, but I thought the Jason Alexander and Michael Richards scenes weren’t that funny. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ interaction was pretty good, but I could see the strife brewing as soon as the daughter came in the room.

It’s funny how the episode somewhat parallels the arc in Seinfeld about Jerry and George’s show. Pissing off the execs over mundane stuff, tension with the actors… it’ll be fun to see how many shout-outs come between the two.

Meg Ryan vs. Cheryl David will be an interesting tension.

Larry and Susie were great, though. I agree that the premise that a) the NBC head would give Larry such shitty seats and b) he would nix the reunion after being told to fuck off by Larry was ridiculous. Larry could get up in that ass and still have the president kissing his butt (thanks Leon).

I think this show needed a Leon infusion… I suspect it’s on it’s way when he and Michael Richards cross paths… please let it happen!!!

It wasn’t one of the funniest episodes, but it was basically a utility episode setting things up for the season arc. I still did have some funny moments – The tipping issue, George kvetching about the finale, Larry being a smug prick about “saving Susie’s life,” and the set up for some extreme discomfort with the casting issue.

I can’t wait to see some scenes from the mock Seinfeld reunion show, and hope and pray that Kramer vs. Leon happens sometime before it’s over.

Heh, George…Jason, whichever.

I liked it when Jason was talking about George and it is pretty well known that George was based on Larry. He was talking about what a miserable person George was, etc and Larry seemed a bit annoyed.

There’s actually an episode in an earlier season that Jason Alexander was on, and much the same thing happened. He started talking about how utterly loathsome George is, and Larry started taking it personally and defending George.

I really don’t think you’ll see Meg Ryan anymore. I think her appearance was just a cameo to introduce some potential conflict into the story arc. Cheryl will get the role. Overall, this was just an OK episode. Everyone looked 10 years older and LD’s reason for the reunion was broadcast on the first episode. What was most interesting in last night’s episode was the interaction between LD and the Seinfeld cast who seemed to know him all too well. The defensive reaction from LD was absolutely priceless when Jason Alexander described George as unlovable, jerky, schmucky, selfish, stupid, and unappealing. We all know that the George character was based on him.

Was it just me, or did Cheryl look really, really good? She’s still got sort of a Julia Robertsesque, too many teeth in her smile thing going on, but she looked great. I have to imagine that it was deliberate, to dovetail with the “Larry must get her back” plotline.

Unless it’s just me.

She does seem to look especially good now, but I fell in love with her in the first season. While she could get angry over small things sometimes, all in all she was a pretty amazing wife to Larry.
