CuteFTP Professional

I’m using a trial version of CuteFTP Professional 6.0. It seems to work very well, except for one annoying problem. My connections are terminated after exactly 20 minutes, in such a way that the ongoing download reports an error and doesn’t retry. Since I’m downloading a very large file, it means I have to manually go and tell it to restart the transfer every 20 minutes. Fortunately, resume is supported, but it’s still a huge pain. Is this 20 minute limit the result of configuration, a consequence of using the trial version, or should I be checking with the FTP server admin? Thanks!

How about (for Windows XP)

Run Cmd
Then in the window FTP

You’ll be in the free microsoft FTP client.

OPEN<space>Hostname or IP<enter>
sign in with user and maybe PW if needed

Do your GET

See if you get closed after 20 min.

If you want to be entertained, enter HASH before GET
That will print #'s every so often if the server supports it.

I had similar disconnect problems with CuteFTP which I could never explain or eliminate. I eventually switched to Bulletproof FTP which really has been bulletproof for me. My entire organization uses CuteFTP and it’s great software, but for some reason I had problems.

I also use GetRight as a download manager to handle big downloads when I’m travelling and have a slow connection. It has some limitations if the file you need isn’t on HTTP or anonymous FTP, but it works very well.

Neither of these solves your problem with CuteFTP, but you might try one or the other to see if they have the same problem. That would tell you whether the 20 minute timeout is in CuteFTP or on the serverside.
