D&D Game 3: Vikings!

Ulf asks Jorund to wait a moment before packing. We may need to say ‘goodbye’ to Gautrek first.
And then there may be a fight!
Let us wait for Bjarni’s signal…

Bjarni notices Ulf is not packing, but staying alert and calmly looking at Gautrek. Ulf asks Ivar and Bjarni what they think is happening.

Osvald will join the party indoors to discuss the possibilities of evil intentions by asking the Rune Priest what he has mind read. “Please, share what you’ve learned with the rest of us while we still have some time. Is Bjarni truly safe with this armed man?”

Just in Case I’m not here for the fight Osvald’s Thoughts:

*Note: are the armed men in such a position to be Webbed? Ie: are they near walls and such? Or is it unlikely? Or if they are all on their horses, is it possible (Since web can go from ceiling to floors), that I could just web all their horses down to the ground (Since horses are pretty hefty things).

Should things get a bit more involved, Osvald would try to see if he can maximize his ColorSpray into taking down as many as possible. before having to resort to Magic missiles and such (Man, I’m glad I loaded up some offensive spells today, silly prestidigitation)
At the worst case scenario: “Run away and Poke from a distance”

These are great thoughts. (Well, apart from ‘run away and poke from a distance’ )

As with Ivar, though, please be aware you have two enthusiastic berserkers who love to get into combat. So please try not to catch Jorund and I in the area of effect…

No, I’ll be very careful with the javelins. In close quarters like this, I’ll throw them by hand, and not at anyone you’re directly engaging.

This morning Ivar loaded:
3x Torchlight, 1x Mending, 1x Create Water
4x Cure Light Wounds, 1x Bless
1x Augury, 2x Hold Person, 1x Spiritual Weapon, 1x ESP
2x Cure Moderate Wounds

If possible, get up high (is there a loft or something?) where I can’t be easily attacked and use Spiritual Weapon. Cast Bless before the battle starts. Throw javelins liberally but carefully. Hold Person if there’s a good opportunity. And naturally, every round after the first I should heal someone who needs it rather than attack. If there are any archers, maybe a Create Water on them, wetting their bowstring?

Will try to keep that in mind. Though if the “battle” were to start, I think the first thing to be cast would be Web before you guys run up to them and started the hacking and slashing and smashing.
But yes, I’ll keep that in mind for my delightful color sprays & Magic Missiles.

Did any of the Armed Men look like Magic Users? Or just run of the Mill Viking Warriors? IE: Did we notice anyone who looked different from the others besides the head guy?

The visitors look like warriors - armoured, helmeted, carrying shields and swords. If any of them were a Rune-Priest of Tyr he would be hard to tell from a warrior at a glance, though. You (especially Ivar) may have seen one from time to time.

Do you plan to rush out and attack your visitors, or denounce Gautrek as a liar and see what happens?

Can’t we do both?

I think a show of strength might be in order here. What say you friends?

(You must deliver Cures by touch - so you cannot both be out of reach and be able to Cure. Water must be created in a container - a spell to create a short rainstorm would be another matter altogether. (Precipitation seems to have disappeared - I know I saw it once somewhere but it’s not on the standard list.) Otherwise those will do fine as battle instructions.)

Ulf likes your style (and thanks for the extra cures).

I hope you won’t mind if I mention that Cures are delivered by touch, so if you’re up high, there’ll be a delay. (On the other hand, since we are outnumbered, you don’t want to be standing in the wrong place and get your spells interrupted by a blow.)
Also Hold Person is dynamite (much better than Create Water!)

Ulf says that he would love to show his strength!

He adds:

“Jorund, your Hammers are good against Chain, aren’t they? If there’s a fight, you start on Gautrek and I’ll start on the men in Ring Mail.”

"Perhaps, Bjarni, we three Fighters should be outside, while the spellcasters look on from a distance. You lead the negotiations, but if necessary I will go Berserk bear-handed. "

"Osvald and Ivar, please keep all my weapons* and shield with you, but handy. If there is combat, and I come out of Berserkerdom alive, toss me my Battle Axe and Shield.
Oh, and of course you know that any long-lasting combat spells would be welcomed before we step out to confront Gautrek. "

DM, if catching these two things is too difficult, then change it to my Pole Axe.

*Pole Axe, Battle Axe, Shield, Bow, Quiverand Hand Axe!

“Oh me no pack . . . confused . . . Show strength? What that mean . . . go bend stuff?”

When combat starts I’m going to throw both of throwing hammers at Gautrek then berserk and bring up my aspect. I’m going to try and fight dual wielding hammers into the crowd deep enough to use a lightening blast to a maximum effect and not hurt any teammates. Then fight my way back to where I can get cured trying to focus on the opponent who is the biggest threat at all times.

I have no idea about weapon effectivness but I’ll go with attacking Gautrek

Hammers are no better or worse than standard against chain mail. You have likely fought chain-armoured foes before with success (you weren’t born at your current level of expertise).

Berserkers don’t normally worry too much about staying close to healers, just about marmelising whoever is near enough to be caught.

I know there was discussion of meeting the Jarl unarmed, but that doesn’t mean we are (or need to be) unarmed now does it?

Oh all right.

“Perhaps if we were to attack them, I should first use Color Spray (Since Web may not be effective), to get as many as possible right away while they’re bunched up and then hightail it back to the other caster, and THEN you fellows run in and clean up? Bjarni, just use a word as a signal for me to do so- if you mention that the Jarl would love TEA then I will cast the color spray, and run a distance back, to the rune priest.
Perhaps that can be the code for the attack if negotiations fail, or he doesn’t like being called a liar? And then I’ll try to keep us casters safe by picking off the still conscious ones with a bit of Magic Missile? Oh, and I was hoping to use Web, alas that they don’t seem to be in the right position for it. My theories of Horses as sufficient Mass for webbing may need more work. Perhaps another Day, or should the situation become so dire, we can try that. But for now I think our plan should be negotiations. Followed by the Code word, which if spoken , would lead to an ambushing of them by us. What does everyone think?”

Well (cue massive smugness) Ulf and Jorund have their little ways.

I see that Jorund is ready to throw hammers, then, using two more hammers simultaneously, go Berserk thus casting Lightning as well.

I shall also go Berserk and attack bearhanded, which means using my hands as claws. I don’t have lightning, but I think you’ll be impressed at how much damage I do to men in Ring! After i come out of Berserkness, I will switch to Pole Axe (lobbed to me by the casters).

So although Jorund and I scorn the use of Armour, we know how to inflict loads of damage.
You are most welcome to always keep on your best armour and shield and use your best weapon. You’re a Fighter and we like that approach too.

Osvald sighs and looks at Jorund, trying to come up with the words to explain the plan: “Me weak. You Jorund. You Strong. If Me do pretty colors- Me run AWAY. : Gestures with hands a little figure running away:
If Me run away, jorund run *that *way and fight. : gestures the opposite way of the running away figure:
Me run away… jorund then JorundSmash, BUT ONLY if jorund sees pretty colors… Jorund understand?”

“Huh . . . Code word? I go hit Gautrek? What going on?”

“Oh ok me see pretty colors then hit Gautrek. . . Ok me do that . . . Pretty colors”

Ok fair enough well then I’ll stay in the middle of the fray bashing the biggest baddest guy I see

Fine, but at least there are no penalties. And Ulf is dying* to use his Berserker special…

Oh, absolutely. I was looking at it from the Rune-priest’s point of view.
*well not actually dying…

And following this discussion, do you now go out and confront Gautrek?
