D & D on the Straight Dope setup thread. (In Middle Earth FA63)

Boromir would have been the handiest in melee and I am sure the Rohirrim appreciated Gimli more than Legolas at the siege, but as a member of a small fellowship, I would greatly value the one exceptional archer. I did not mean to overplay this. In a hand to hand fight, give me Aragorn, but Legolas would probably not be so foolish to get stuck in a H-t-H fight with a single dwarf and instead would do the typical run and shoot strategy.

I like the way you are staying in character even in the setup thread. I am sure your arguments would raise your esteem in the eyes of Gimli and Gwaelur.

Actually, this argument goes back decades to the arguments my brother and I would have. He was the elf-lover, so of course I had to choose the other side. Sibling rivalry - you’ve got to love it! That’s why I love to point out that the first to run like a frightened little girl from the Balrog was Legolas. I’ve been using that example for years - that example, plus the fact that when an elves and men came together at the last alliance, it was men who saved the day. Where was Gil-galad when Elendil fell and Isildur cut off the ring? That’s right…he was already taking a dirt nap.

As pointed out, Legolas show much smarts in running from the Balrog, if the rest had shown as much, perhaps Gandalf would not have been as distracted and would not have been pulled down by the Balrog.

If the humans had been as wise as the Elf, perhaps Gandalf would not have fallen*.

Jim (I think I managed to snip enough to fall within the boards definition of fair use.)

  • Of course it all work out rather well in the end, except for poor Boromir.

** You don’t have the Books handy?! ** :smack:

Heresy!

The only thing to do is to have an immediate vote to kick you out the party.
You many be a pleasant poster, roleplaying well, but none of that matters.

Moose: Kick out the filthy orc-lover!

Ghân produces proxy votes from his entire tribe…“so that’s 257 votes to send Brin away…”

My memory is that Legolas cried out in terror as the orc-horde parted, revealing the Balrog.
The book does not say who fled first, but before long Gandalf (wearing Narya, the Elvish Ring of Fire) faces the Balrog on the bridge.
Aragorn and Boromir turn back to help Gandalf, but before they can reach him, the Wizard breaks the bridge…

**What. ** You mean you haven’t memorised it all and have to refer to the books.

Outrageous :stuck_out_tongue:

If you read my post, you’ll notice I said “My memory is …”

Of course a chap doesn’t need to refer to the books.

They should be by your computer for purely sentimental reasons.

I have my collected Tolkien ouvre just a floor away. Does that count?

Ghân is happy, but Moose says that’s too far…

I have the books in my bedroom and my office. I also have a special set at work.
Besides, I have most of the LotR committed to memory and just do the lookups to get the exact words or spelling.

I think we are waiting on Malacandra in the game thread, he has to decide what to do with the figure he is approaching.

They also make a great flat surface for balancing your bowl of Cheetos.

I’m there…

You need to build what? The best of your shipcraft wouldn’t get one plank across to the Farther Shore. Bigger isn’t better, my friend. We’ll go in our own good time - huh. Sit in bliss at the feet of the Valar in an everlasting Day of music, feasting, song and lore… or put up with the halfwitted maunderings of a boorish lout with a giant chip on his shoulder and a totally unjustified sense of racial pride. It’s a toughie. You can understand why we need a century or two to think it over. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, in that case… passes up the cheap shot.

An Elf needs a Dwarf like a Wose needs a shipyard.

How many Elves and Dwarves do you need to start an argument?

Not many.

No one said the ships have to make it to the Farther Shore. They just need to get you far enough away from this one. (I should have been a Dwarf)

Indeed! Do go on, I love a good elf joke.

Why weren’t you? Wasn’t your Charisma high enough? :stuck_out_tongue:

Just checking in, I didn’t disappear, but I’ve been busy. I am heading for a sleep over of the USS New Jersey, so I will try to update the game thread tomorrow afternoon or evening (EST). I hope everyone has a good weekend.

I think this is my boat weekend. I spend 5 hours working on an old wooden boat, mainly picking seams and now I am heading to a Cub Scout camp out on a Battle Ship.

I should note, of course, that this is the anniversary of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and the tragic but glorious death of Theoden, King of Rohan (TA 3019).

Which brings back quite a few memories for some of the party.

Ghân, whose grandfather actually met and guided Theoden to the battle  , salutes both King Theoden and King Aragorn (who granted the Wose their lands).

Thoroncir whispers, “That’s King Elessar.”

Just a check, are people getting the maps I sent out for the two battles and do they make sense?
I would like to keep improving the game play as we go along.
