Dancing with the Stars, Season 7 (Fall 2008)

It all starts tomorrow night, with the first of three shows this week – one dance by everyone Monday (plus intros and the first round of cheesy behind-the-scenes vids, no doubt); another, different, dance by everyone Tuesday; the first and second eliminations Wednesday. Yay!

Last season we just had one thread for the entire season, which seemed to work fine – I look forward to seeing my fellow fans checking in here regularly.

Thank heavens you told me; I wouldn’t have had the slightest idea!

But it’s the election season! I have Countdown and Rachel Maddow to watch! Now what am I going to do? Wait, they’re both repeated; I may be able to work this out.

Tell me about it! My husband is a hardcore political junkie so it’s been Rachel Maddow every evening for over a week.

I’m in and I’ll be watching.

Thanks for launching the thread, Twickster.

Glad to hear they are having everyone dance the first round on the same night this time.

Yes, I’m sorry I didn’t say thank you for having started the thread, twicky.

Man they all have to deluge us with extra hours of their shows during premiere week, don’t they? My wife and I really don’t watch that many shows, but this week we’ll have like 80 hours of stuff to watch between the extra Dancing, Heroes, and Survivor (and probably a few others I’m forgetting). I too will record Rachel Maddow later.

It’s rough. I’m going to have to watch five solid hours of TV every night, starting with the Lehrer Hour at 7, DwtS at 8-10, Countdown at 10, and Rachel Maddow at 11. I don’t want to have to watch all that, but what choice do I have? I can’t let the politicals go, and it’s no good watching them the next day. But DwtS is also not optional. And of course Lehrer is my duty as a citizen. sigh. At least all but the first are commerical TV, so I can take bathroom breaks.

Get your snack foods lined up in advance.

Toni Braxton – wow. Thank god they’re not all going to suck all season.

I’m sorry, Cloris – 82-year-old women, no matter how plucky, don’t belong on this show. Go away now.

Especially 82 year old women who appear to have had many stiff drinks to take the edge off before competing.

Is Harold Wheeler not back this year?

I hadn’t noticed, but by George I think you’re right!

If only that meant that the music improved…

ETA: Warren Sapp just started. Damn, there’s something so much fun about a really big guy who just totally throws himself into it.

He is. They name-checked him sometime around the third dance.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I was entertained. This already seems a far more interesting bunch than last season’s crew. For the love of all that’s holy, though, please please please let Cloris Leachman go early. That crossed the border deep into freak show territory.

With my enjoyment uncolored by actually knowing who most of the entertainers are (I don’t watch much TV these days), my first round faves were Toni Braxton, Brooke Burke, Ted McGinley, Misty (freakishly muscular) May, and Warren Sapp. Jeff Ross is utterly hopeless, the worst I’ve seen since the legendary Master P, but he had the best line line of the night (“Speaking of ballroom, these pants are really tight”), so I kinda hope he makes it to at least one more round. Kim Kardashian was a bit of a surprise and has some potential. Lance Bass and partner bugged the hell out of me, for some reason, and the rest left little impression.

Whee, though, it’s 11 or 12 more glorious weeks of glitter and tack! I can’t wait.

I was thinking that while watching Cloris, and then Kim Cardashian “danced.” And Kim proved that being 80 was not the real problem. (btw, why were both scored higher than Rocco? Really? Not that he was great…but…)

And still, both were better than Sara Evans.

It was fun… still so many bad camera angles. Still the worst version of “Smooth” I’ve ever heard. Still “Dancing” with the “Stars.” I’m going to have a good week.

The curve dropped a lot as the evening progressed. The first five or so dancers would have had much higher marks at the end of the program, I think.

The comic guy, Jeffrey, was far and away the worst (although, yes, he was quite funny), I think, followed by the chef. It seemed to me that Kim Cardashian was the worst of the women, (ignoring the Cloris Leachman issue for the moment), followed by Misty May, although she turned out to be much better than I’d expected from her lead in - I expected her to be another Monica Seles.

Susan Lucci, the sprinter and Ted McWhatever were all mediocre, and that really surprised me about Ted. I expected him to be dreadful. I suspect he will be in Latin.

The rest seem to be viable contenders.

As for Cloris Leachman, she was having a blast playing the role of “sassy old woman who can say whatever she wants,” and at this point, she’ll get points simply for surviving the routines. She was, and apparently appears to continue to be, a great comedienne. That wasn’t drunkeness or senility. That was improv acting, and she was enjoying it to the hilt! More power to her. BTW, she still has great legs, although her torso isn’t what it once was. Then again, at 82, whose torso is?

Susan Lucci looked so tiny and frail. Her stick legs were not atractive at all.

Lance Bass’ partner Lacey is just as obnoxious and attention seeking as she was on SYTYCD.

Toni Braxton was hot and a good dancer this early in the show.

I liked Warren Sapp’s energy, even though he wasn’t the most graceful out there.

Can’t wait 'til Cloris Leachman is gone.

:smack:

*That’s *who she is!

Was Warren the guy that went last? Isn’t he a football player? And hasn’t football started? How does that work. Anyway, I thought the last guy actually went out and danced. Yes, he did the steps that were required, but he made it seem spontaneous and fun.

There are too many folks for me to remember them all, but I was surprised at Ted McGinley (was he on Love Boat?). Although not great, he did look classy.

The sprinter tried real hard, but couldn’t get the ups and downs and the rythmic movement.

Toni Braxton was good for the beginning. We’ll see how she progresses. I hope she’s not this season’s sob story with her heart defect.

The comedian (I’ve never heard of him) was sad. He needs to go. Give Cloris the gift of not being the first auffed and let him go.

That model, or Playboy Bunny, or whatever looks amazing for having 4 kids! I wonder if she paid someone to have them for her? She was pretty good.

Lance Bass’s partner makes me want him gone. Did anyone noticed Samantha’s uncomfortable pause after she (the partner) said that now Lance would never marry her? Sort of nice to see the whole gay thing being acknowledged but not made a big deal of. He’s a lot thinner (and hopefully more fit) than Joey Fatone, and he can move, I think.
Susan Lucci seems so tentative. She danced like she was on eggshells.

That boy from Hannah Montana seems like a dirty old man at 18. We’ll have to see how much a part youth plays.

Misty May-Treanor looks a lot older in a dance costume. Athleticism doesn’t always equal grace. We’ll have to see how she pans out. She’s very driven, so that’s a plus.

That’s all I can remember. I’m always hopeless at the beginning when there are so many competitors.
