Dancing with the Stars, Season 7 (Fall 2008)

I missed Lance Bass (putting my daughter to bed) and Warren Sapp (putting myself to bed).

I was pleasantly surprised by Toni Braxton, what’s-her-name the model, and Ted McGinley. Susan Lucci and Misty May Treanor were both worse than I expected. Jeff Ross is the obvious cut for tonight, and I hope it’s Cloris tomorrow. I wasn’t even impressed with her comdienne skills at this point, let alone her dancing.

(My understanding is that they’re cutting one person tonight before they’re allowed to dance, and the next one tomorrow night. Ouch.)

Warren Sapp just retired recently, so he’s not missing out on any football. He was a delightful surprise, and my new favorite.

Toni Braxton has an outie, by the way…which fixated my wife for some reason.

Lacey Schwimmer: still obnoxious. Doesn’t seem to realize that she’s not the Star in DwtS. They should’ve gotten Benji instead.

My wife started rolling her eyes at how shallow the Hannah Montana* kid was…I pointed out that: he’s 18. He’s acting like an 18-year-old boy acts.

ETA: Holy crap…it looks like Cheryl Burke spent the off-season at a Krispy Kreme. She must’ve put on 20 pounds.

*Note the obligatory Disney Machine participation --we will always see somebody from The Disney Channel, and somebody from an ABC soap. Nobody from ESPN this time, though.

And speaking of smokin’ hot bods (which formerly included Cheryl Burke), it’s just criminal that Edyta was paired up with the comedian, so we won’t get to ogle her after this week. If there was any justice, they would announce tonight a sudden juggling of the partners, and switch Edyta and Lacey Schwimmer.

Just putting my toes in to say that I’m thrilled to have this show back on! Did Kym get a boob job over the break, or did I just not notice those things before?

In alphabetical order …

Lance Bass: middle of the pack - not fantastic but not terrible; used to choreography but not dancing KWIM?
Toni Braxton: is comfortable with her body and moving it and being sexy, which helps … could do OK if she can learn the dances
Brooke Burke: no clue … I was way to mesmerized by the boobs to remember her dance
Rocco DiSpirito: blech … he’s super hot, but the only reason he won’t go first is Jeffery Ross
Maurice Greene: middle of the pack again; has the “advantage” of being accustomed to rigorous training
Kim Kardashian: some potential, and SMOKIN’ hot
Cloris Leachman: we love you and all, but buh-bye
Cody Linley: if he can stop staring at Julianne’s T&A long enough to learn the dances, he could do OK
Susan Lucci: looked like she was afraid she would break; no hips, no flexibility, no musicality … no mirror ball for you!
Misty May-Treanor: has potential; needs more feminity
Ted McGinley: not as bad as I thought, but not great; early out
Jeff Ross: funny, but horrible dancer
Warren Sapp: something about those NFL boys … they do really well with Dancing; should go far

No early favorite for me this season.

The show is over on the East Coast. Can’t say I found the first elimination terribly surprising – bad first performance and not much of a fan base.

I missed the first hour – how bad was Cloris tonight?

THe one really shocking thing from the second night was that Rocco, the chef, really* rocked *the mambo. McGinley tanked it, which you would have expected, Susan Lucci did much better in the Quick Step, which you also would have expected, everyone else did about what you would have expected. Leachman will be the last of the “hopelesses” to go, of course. She reminds everyone of their mom or their grandmom - who’s going to tell her she has to go home?

Best dance of the night, once again? Brooke what’s 'er face (I have no idea who she is or what she’s known for, but she minds me rather chillingly of Sarah Palin). Next one to go, IMO? The reality TV star. No value added.

Who dat, Kim Kardashian? Yeah, she’s not bringing much to the table, despite what is, apparently, a very famous ass.

Cheryl really did put on, didn’t she? My husband thought I was terrible for mentioning it, but I’m sorry, she’s big!

I’ll miss Edyta. You don’t have to be a man or a lesbian to appreciate her body.

I loved that Warren Sapp both nights. He may not be the greatest dancer, but he was very fun to watch and not in a “well, at least it was entertaining” kind of way, but more in a joyful kind of way. He’s my guy so far.

It’s funny though. Mostly I care about the dancers, not the stars.

We get to “know” the stars better, following them over several seasons and watching them interact with different people.

For instance, last night I was watching Tony and thinking what a total sweetheart he is – he’s always so supportive of and responsive to his partner.

Yeah, I like him a lot too.

And while I’m really not into perfect little cornfed Republican* Mormons, I must say that Julianne almost always dresses in comparatively good taste. And her brother is adorable.

*You just know she must be.

I’m glad they had Edyta and Jeffrey do their quickstep, which was significantly better than their Latin number, whatever that was supposed to be.

I missed it, not having the patience to sit through 55 minutes of tween heartthrobs. So I just caught the final eliminations. I’d honestly expected the reality show bimbo to be the next to go, but I still have hopes for next week. Other than a nice body, she’s really not adding anything to this, and let’s face it - nice bodies are something there is no shortage of on this show. Her dancing is purely mediocre, and she provides no entertainment value.

ETA: Even Cheryl, whom I agree appears to have gained as much as 20 lbs, is not fat - her belly is still flat. She’s just not as slim as she was, but there’s no flab or jiggle there.

Phooey! Had to work, didn’t get home till 10 – anything of interest happen tonight? (I guess I can watch tomorrow and see the Cliff Notes version, anyway…)

Dancing 9/29 -

My primary issue with tonight’s dances is that it doesn’t seem that most of the couples have any connection with each other. Just looking at your prtner (if they even do that) isn’t enough to make it seem there’s any passion, hate or love. I will say that Warren’s was my favorite dance. Cody needs about 10 years of maturing, but he does seem to have nice long lines. Misty attacked the dance, but it worked this time. Olympian dominatrix. Kim, Rocco and Susan just were blah as far as I am concerned. Lance needs a new partner who won’t lead him into temptation. Toni and Brooke were okay, and I don’t really remember Maurice’s dance.

StG

Am I nuts, or was Brooke doing a Paso to Beethoven? Is there anyway to find out what the music was?

Wasn’t that the Debeers diamond commercial song?

Nobody is really grabbing my attention so far. Enjoyed Warren, light on his feet and seems to be enjoying himself on the dance floor while everyone else is still in the scared to death/tense stage.

Personally, I thought Cloris did a much better job than Rocco, Kim and Maurice. All of them were stiff with no musicality whatsoever. Whereas Cloris actually swiveled her hips, had chemistry with her partner and really was part of the music. I know she wasn’t spectacular but others were much worse. She definitely didn’t deserve the worst score.

The song choices this week were horendous. “I kissed a girl” for a paso? I can’t remember specific numbers right now, I just remember thinking at the time,HUH?

Well, gee, I was only off by a couple of hundred years… Palladio, by Karl Jenkins. Beautiful piece, and familiar, anyway. I hear a beautiful piece in that kind of string style with a lot of tension and excitement like that, and no discord like many 20th century composers, I think Beethoven.

See, I found this surreally ironic. Bass is gay, no? And in the vein of celebrity “heart throbs” coming out of the closet, weren’t thousands of pre-pubescent girls sobbing in their beds over this revelation at some point? (Maybe I’m wrong about this.)

Again I said, HUH? I don’t typically give a hoot about celebrity sexual preference, but a gay guy prancing around to a lesbian song and then making out with a woman is a little confusing.

Wow, he’s got great arms though!

Especially since Lance was supposed to be the “girl.” Bold choice. I don’t like his partner.

I also think that the people who get unromantic songs for the rumba are at a disadvantage. Certainly, it’s easier to be romantic when you’re hearing “I don’t care what they say, I’m in love with you” than it is to “brother, there’s too many of you dying” or “it’s hard to beat the system” even if the songs are kind of slowish.

Other than that - I liked Toni, I thought Brooke’s arms were weird (they kept praising the lines, but they were weird looking), Rocco can’t seem to dance slow, Kim doesn’t seem to understand that standing and smiling is not enough, Warren looked good, Susan looked like Jane Seymour - but shorter, Misty was focused in the wrong direction but looked good below the shoulders, and Cloris looked like she was dancing in orthopedic shoes.
