Go check out the clip tmz.com has posted of Shawn and Mark—very mildly possible that it’s nsfw!
The problem with Ty is that once he hits a passionate dance, he’ll be dead meat. He can do a silly “Latin” dance like the Lindy (and yeah, Twicky, I know it’s from the twenties, so WTF?), but he’ll go to pieces again with a Rumba or a Mambo.
I was VERY impressed by Lil Kim last night, ditto with Melissa, but I have to admit that Gilles deserved his trip 10. I loved Carrie Ann - “And YOU - Mrs. hoo-hah… Wow!” Totally incoherent and you knew exactly what she meant. Of course, she’s made it very clear throughout the years that she digs dominant men, at least in dance. But then again, at least in dance, what straight woman doesn’t? We’ve been utterly conditioned by our culture…
Oddly, although I dislike Steve-O rather profoundly, I find Lacey far more tolerable this season than last. Still don’t like her much, but better than I did last season.
I like Tony. And Derek, too, of course, but then it’s almost impossible to dislike the Stepford kids, no matter how Republican they must be or how much of a belly laugh I find their religious beliefs to be. Their parents must be deservedly very proud of those two. Julianne continues to be the only woman in Ballroom/Latin dance who usually manages to dress in something truly approaching good taste - amazing!
I love it when Carrie Ann goes off that like that. She appears to be, uh, quite comfortable in her sexuality. I fully expect her to go all Harry Met Sally when the right performance comes along.
Lacy’s having to be the reasonable one, it’s probably good for her. Steve-O definitely deserves at least another week or two, he is showing some good improvement.
I suspect Ty would have had a much harder time with the tango–do they get to pick which one, or is it the luck of the draw?
Honestly, I really didn’t see much of a difference between Woz’s tango and LT’s. If anything, I liked Woz’s better simply because it had a little more personality. I really didn’t see much more from LT than standing there, waiting for his partner to dance around, then walk in a semicircle and wait again.
Agreed.
Emmitt Smith and Warren Sapp both seemed to be naturally gifted dancers, and both gave off vibes that they were enjoying themselves immensely. LT…not good and not having fun. Apparently there are no broad sweeping conclusions about football players as ballroom dancers.
Yay – repeat of a good dance instead of a dance-off last night.
Thank god we didn’t have to watch repeats of any of those dances – and thank god Holly and Woz are both gone. Steve-O goes next week, and then we get to the actual competition.
I didn’t watch the show except for the final elimination, but you could hear me cheering as dear Holly got exed. I would have preferred to lose Steve-O to the Woz, but six of one…
I’m so pleased to hear that they got rid of the dance-off, and returned to repeating a good dance instead. Which one did they do? I’m guessing Gilles.
A friend sent me the following email (I don’t know if there’s a source behind it):
I was stunned. I had wondered if they got any money at all, since the exposure is so valuable; I’d think they’d have people lining up. In fact, I’d wondered why they seemed to have to scrape the bottom of the barrel wrt stars - they get so many people who no one has ever heard of, and the names they do get are usually past their prime (except for Olympic medalists - I guess the money paid explains why they’re so available).
I’m also amazed if my friend’s figures are accurate for how compartively little the pro dancers are making. At this point, most of them are bigger ‘names’ than the majority of so-called stars, and I suspect are as big or bigger a draw.
Re; the dance pro’s salaries:
Look at the big picture. The dance pros get name recognition. Would we have ever bought a “Julianne Hough” country album absent her participation in the show? Maks owns dance studios. I’m sure he’s raised his prices and I’m sure they’re filled to the brim. Then there’s the DWTS Excercise video…
I think they’re doing all right.
Interesting info – thanks!
One reason is the time commitment – 20 hours/week has to be damn close to the minimum, the real contenders I’m sure are doing more. You can’t have any kind of other gig going while you’re on the show, which can be up to three months if you make it to the finals. (Since there’s two weeks of practice before the season starts.)
I don’t know, I kind of like the idea of dancing for your survival on the show.
That said, nice to watch Gilles & Cheryl again. I was right there with Carrie Ann the first time they did that dance. It made me want to try tango again.
Of the bottom three, Holly bothered me the least (I think she could have done better with a more experienced Pro). But as long as Steve-O/Lacey are gone next week, I’ll be happy.
What I didn’t like last night, was when Steve-O said how stressed he was and how grateful he was to be able to do something so stressful and not get loaded, and they played it off like an “oh ho ho!, that comic Steve-O!” sort of moment. Yeah, he was smiling and half-joking, but he was half-serious too, and he made a good point: He should be very proud of himself and what he has accomplished, especially considering he has to know the axe is hanging over his head, week after week, waiting to fail on national television. I’m not asking for anyone to wipe away a tear while pinning a medal on him, but I wish there’d been just a bit more acknowledgement that even to still be there, and be straight, is an achievement for him personally.
A disappointing evening, overall.
We’re almost rid of the cannon fodder, and with Steve-O’s presumed departure tonight, we’ll be down to those who can actually dance, whether they came into the season with some skills in that area or not. Right now I’m loving the ones who didn’t, but who are finding their inner dancer during the show – I have such a total DWTS crush on Ty, I can’t begin to tell you. He comes across as such a mensch. Thus his performance last night was immensely disappointing – so stiff! The man just ain’t cut out for Latin.
Other comments:
Shawn came into the season with an advantage with her background, but is having a hard time translating her skills into the fluidity of the dance. I thought their waltz was very sweet, though – Mark did well to play up her youth and innocence with that choreography. I’m no longer confident that she’ll be one of the final three, though – Mark, in general, isn’t choreographing well for them. The gym routine last week was a total misstep. (Heh. Pun intended.)
(And, BTW, totally OT – he and Derek are best friends, partners in a band, etc. Am I alone in wondering … ? )
Derek and Lil’ Kim (and, BTW, totally OT, am I alone in being bothered by the randomness of the placement of the apostrophe in Lil’ Kim’s name?) dance well together, and she continues to develop as a dancer – final three. As will be Gilles (talk about your sexy beast – OMG) and Cheryl. Third in the final three – Melissa and Tony.
My prediction for the order of departures:
Steve-O
Lawrence
DAG/Ty (depends on who does what that week)
the other of DAG/Ty
Chuck
Shawn
final three of Gilles, Melissa, and Lil’ Kim
I can never even seem to remember Chuck’s existance.
I think Ty’s a sweetie. Not much of a dancer, but a sweetie.
Steve-O still makes me want to punch him. I fast forward through his dances.
DAG is just there. No charisma.
I wonder if Derek would’ve been a better partner for Shawn. He’s younger and may be able to connect better with her, and he’s a dynamic dancer.
Gilles was fantastic. I wasn’t thrilled with the bare chest ala Maks, but his dance was great, without seeming to border on parody, which is a knife edge with the Paso.
Lil’ Kim. I hate the name (how old do you have to get before you’re not "lil’ " anymore?), I hate the prison girl background, but she’s bringing it on the dance floor.
Melissa isn’t much of a star, but she is quite the dancer. I can’t take my eyes off her.
Lawrence? Plodding.
StG
I said a couple of weeks ago that Gilles was going to have women fainting in the aisles when the Paso came up, and he didn’t disappoint. I am curious how he’s going to do with a standard dance that is harder to sex up, though. I was sort of hoping he would get Viennese this week.
I was watching The Mentalist last night, so didn’t tune in to the results show until 9:55 – imagine my astonishment that Steve-O wasn’t in the spotlight. Guess the show does have a braindead teenage boy element in the viewership.
Damn, should’ve voted Monday night – DAG would have gotten half my votes, and Ty the other half. I’m sure those 4 votes would have made a difference! I do not think this was a good elimination – not only was there another “star” worse than either of them, DAG wasn’t the worse of those two.
Steve-O got my votes, and I’m hardly a braindead teenage boy. I certainly wouldn’t have guessed that I would have done this before the season started, but quite frankly, I found DAG much, much more annoying on the show than Steve-O (or just about anyone, for that matter).
Do I think Steve-O should win overall? Absolutely not. But I don’t think he’s really that far behind either LT or Ty (I think either of them doing a waltz would have been a trainwreck), and I find him more interesting at this point than LT and about even with Ty.
Totally stunned by the results. The only explanation I can think of is that DAG has no fans whatsoever (ouch!) And that The Viewers are voting for Edyta, and don’t care if she’s trying to dance with Frankenstein - they just hope that next week is the week her dress finally falls off completely.
Oops! :o
All I meant was that there have been certain people throughout the history of this show who have made it past the first few rounds based primarily on the enthusiasm of a pre-existing fan base. I was not only speculating that was this so for Steve-O but speculating as to what that fan base might consist of.
Obviously I was wrong on both points.
Po-tay-to, po-tah-to – I find his persona (or at least my preconceptions of it) so incredibly annoying that I just can’t get past it to look at his dancing objectively. Objectively, he is stiff and awkward, and as such belongs in the same category as LT, and, to a lesser extent, Ty and DAG. I would – and did – rank them thusly from worst to less-worst, but that’s just my opinion.
I apologize for impugning your age and cerebral status.
One thing I noticed is that while they started out in the 10th grade clutch hold, Kym and David actually did attempt some actual dancing during their Last Dance on the results show, which is always something I’ve been disappointed not to see. Not that I expect them to whip out a fancy new routine, but I feel like the celebs must be learning some dance basics along the way that would allow them to just dance, freestyle, for 20 seconds or so, and not look like they just escaped from the Enchantment Under the Sea ball.
