Daniel Tosh and racist jokes

It’s fucking hilarious.

Hmm…I don’t think that word means what you think it means.

This thread is interesting in part because of how hung up people got on whether Tosh’s humor is ironic. I don’t think that the term “ironic” applies, but the term “meta” does.

Tosh’s racial jokes aren’t at the expense of minorities; they’re at the expense of our taboos. WhyNot was on the right track. They’re also to a degree at the expense of, well, stereotypical white people who think of themselves are completely non-racist but are very uncomfortable discussing race.

Compare Tosh’s jokes with this Rich Vos clip. Is Vos joking at the expense of black people, at the expense of people who believe the stereotypes, or at the expense of another form of stereotypical thinking?

Right. “My tastes differ from yours, so I’m better than you!”

No, I never said that and I don’t believe that. I’m a big Three Stooges fan and I think they’re about as low brow as possible. But I think (my opinion) that Tosh isn’t really that complex or meta. The claims that he is being ironic or dealing in social commentary seem to fail because his humor doesn’t strike me as being being of that nature.

And I don’t find him funny.

Whereas with Fannee Doolee, it’s just the opposite.
