Does anyone know who performs this song in Ferris Buellers Day Off. Everywhere I look it says that it’s Wayne Newton, but it’s not, it’s a female voice. Any ideas???
Wayne Newton sounded that way, many years ago.
I think the young Wayne Newton’s voice was often mistaken for that of a woman.
“Danke Schoen”.
It’s Wayne Newton.

It wasn’t only the young Wayne’s singing voice that had a higher pitch.I read an article that qouted him as saying he took a tip from another singer/performer,and went out into the desert and screamed (or sang) himself hoarse. After whatever period of time he took to recuperate (vocal chords were raw according to him) his singing voice was in a lower register. This about 10/15 yrs.ago.
From what I gathered from the article he had some issues with public perception of him as less than manly.
He is,BTW,a mensch, public perceptions from certain media types notwithstandng. Can’t say I’m sold on his showroom act, tho.
Since this is about a movie and a song, I’ll move it over to Cafe Society.
Ah yes…Danka Shane…the world’s WORST pronunciation of Danke Schoen (pronounced Donk a shern).
Now, every yahoo who wants to show off his German pipes up with the Wayne Newton perverversion of the words…
but the damn song sold gazillions of copies and made the man a star…he still performs nightly here in Las Vegas at the Stardust…and although I have never seen him, and don’t intend to, people who have gone to his shows say he is fantastic…(just apparently not bilingual).
[Brandon de Wilde voice] “Danke Schoen! Come back, Danke Schoen!” [/Brandon de Wilde voice]
“Everywhere I look it says that it’s Wayne Newton, but it’s not, it’s a female voice.”
Bwhaaahaaahaaa!
Oh man, that’s so damn funny!
One of the dopers here mentioned they’d seen a movie with Robert Goulet in it in which Danke Shoen comes on and Goulet turns to someone and says “Can you believe that’s not a woman singing?”
Haaar… I’ve fallen on the floor and I can’t get up.
Joey P, would you mind if I use your question as a sig line? It’s so brilliant I’m crying.
And yes, as the others have mentioned, that really was Wayne. Here’s a link that’s got his pic around that time. Yep, that’s really him.
If you want to use it go ahead, just keep in mind, this was to settle an argument with a friend of mine. She won’t believe that it’s him. She’s actually the one who told me to ask you guys, becuase she decided that EVERY web page on the internet was wrong when they said it was Wayne Newton.
How’s that?
And tell your friend to keep coming with the questions!
Thanks for at least catching my spelling error. I knew I spelled it wrong, but I didn’t really feel like looking up the correct spelling.
Does anyone know what movie that is??
Jesus Christ, I just heard this song last weekend and thought to myself, “Why on Earth is a woman singing about another woman tearing her dress in Central Park? People didn’t usually come out back then.”
Color me stupid. doh!
