who’s the woman’s voice heard in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and the recent Mercedes Benz commercial that redid Wayne Newton’s Danke Shoen?

Um, I could be wrong, but I believe the “woman” in question is Mr. Newton himself.

This site confirms, for the movie at least, that it is the genuine Wayne Newton singing his hit.

I’ve always wondered this… Why does he sing “Danke shayn” instead of “Danke shoen”? “Schoen” sounds closer to “shern” than “shayn”. (Although it doesn’t have an “R” in it. It’s more like shaping your mouth like an “O” and pronouncing a long “E”.)

He says it like that 'cos he’s from Virginia, and we cain’t talk good English, much less German

I was always thrown by his voice too. For years as a kid, I thought it was a woman.

Hee hee hee.

Didn’t someone lately bemoan the fact that people pronounce “Goethe” as “Ger-ta”? Sheesh, you just can’t win.

What song is that? Is it the one he lip syncs to at the parade, on the float, or another?

Wow I guess it is. My god, that’s a MAN singing?!?!

BWAHAHAHAHAH

On some bad TV show last fall, they had Robert Goulet on. At one point he turns to another character and says,

“Tell me, the first time you heard Danke Schoen, didn’t you think it was girl?”

ROTFLO

Another person here who first thought it was a girl singing. Wayne’s voice has deepened a bit since the recording, fortunately.

As for pronunciation of “schoen”, I refer you also to the Andrew Sisters’ “Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen”:

Note the rhyming of “schoen” with “explain”. Hey, it scans better.

Yep, and the young Mr. Newton did something similar so it would rhyme better.

Or perhaps to make it sound better. I don’t recall if it’s meant to rhyme with something.
