Daredevil - Born Again (now streaming)

Try reading to original comic books from the 1960s. Not only was she dull, but not very bright, either.

FWIW Episode 2 was an improvement. Liked it more than the premiere.

It is shockingly rare to see lockpicking and bypass methods shown accurately in film and television even though it doesn’t actually require any expertise to fake it sufficient for those mediums. I especially love when someone takes a pick gun, inserts it into the lock and then the door pops open without even rotating the cylinder or turning the knob. How hard would it be to set up a lock with a single pin tumbler that the actor can ‘pick’ with a hook and tension wrench?

The one thing I do really enjoy is the “BB Report”. For non-comic-book-readers, there was a fantastic series about Ben, and he was a major influence in a number of titles - spider man, daredevil, and the whole Civil War storylines. I was very touched that they brought in his niece.

I guess it was fine but it ruined my whole night. I kept bursting into tears. And DD wasn’t even my favorite Netflix show. (Jessica Jones 5-eva!). A big part of why I wanted to watch DDBA was the relationships MM has with Foggy and Karen. I can appreciate the artistry of the fights and whatnot, but it’s the characters’ friendships that keep me coming back for more throughout the MCU. I’m not out, and Kingpin still terrifies the crap out of me every time he’s on screen, but I’m just sad and disappointed.

New viewers should start at season 1, like any normal person would. It’s not a new show, its not a reboot, it’s just another season.

Technically, it is actually a new show with different creators and originally intended to be a ‘soft reboot’ with very limited continuity (essentially just bringing back Cox and D’Onofrio as Daredevil and Kingpin) but it is now in effect a continuation of the the Netflix series. But except for the central conflict between the two principals (and apparently Bullseye, who seems to be somehow unkillable) it is really a new story arc with just some callbacks to the original series. I doubt that you even need to understand those references to follow it since the first episode took pains to demonstrate the long-standing conflict between Murdoch and Fisk, and that the latter is a known criminal who has somehow managed to gain popular support and win elective office, and is now using his authority to manipulate and control officials. Fortunately, that sort of thing could never happen in real life.

Then why isn’t it listed in Disney Plus as Daredevil season 4? Literally everything about it suggests it’s something new and not the continuation of a show that last aired seven years ago on another streaming service (yes I know it has been available on Disney Plus for a few years now).

I don’t get why I am getting so much push back on this point?

That reminds me of “Snapper Carr”, a character the old men at DC created to appeal to the young people.

You are right. It is season 4, but I am almost in awe of the fact they have had the guts to just go forward as if it’d been a couple years since season 3, not a bunch.

I watched the Ahsoka show on Disney Plus and was pretty blown away how it was a continuation of Rebels, a show many people probably had not seen.

Anyway, I agree that I expected much more intro of Daredevil.

I hope we don’t have to wait the whole season for him to be back in action with his costume. We waited all season 1 before he put on his red suit. He had that black one the whole season.

I am glad they held Fisk back from saying, “Gonna make New York great again.”

It’s been years. I watched the old series and don’t remember where things got left off … maybe I missed season 3?

Agreed that lengthy exposition to summarize is bad. Maybe a “previously on …”? Mostly though it should function as a stand alone that long time viewers can appreciate extra details in, but that new viewers don’t need.

Anyway. End of ep 2? His blood is there. Not sure where they go from here?

The kid at the book signing asking for an appointment? What’s going to be his thing?

I didn’t remember anything but S1 so I watched some recap videos on youtube. And if I miss anything, like oh that guy was the same guy from The Defenders, or whatever, the recap people will fill me in later.

They all seem to think the guy at the signing is The Muse, a serial killer graffiti artist we’ve had some hints about in the first two episodes.

I’ve been enjoying it. I did rewatch S3 right before. The CG was a little iffy on the rooftops at the beginning so it made me a little worried, but they’ve got most of the spirit of the originals.

Matt has an excellent LP catalog.

I don’t watch a lot of courtroom dramas, but I’m surprised they showed a discovery scene in E2. I thought it would be some secret angle to use, but no, they did it the legal way.

Watched ep 3. Not sure if I’m going to bother with ep 4? Probably not. Maybe binge later if others say it gets better.

I’m missing the action sequences – the Netflix series was good about throwing you a bone in every episode even if there wasn’t a big set piece with Matt/Daredevil. On the other hand, I always wanted Matt’s lawyer side given more emphasis and I appreciate the show is making at least a half-hearted effort to show he’s actually good at something other than whaling on people. I think my biggest beef so far is the Fisk/Vanessa subplot. Seeing the two of them airing their grievances in a therapist’s office just makes them seem small and ordinary, and hopefully the show is setting them up for bigger fireworks down the road.

Empire’s crawl fills in the events between the end of Star Wars and the beginning of Empire – it doesn’t recap the events of Star Wars itself.

Is he though? Yeah they had him win but he seems pretty bad at the job.

My only issue with the marriage counseling was that it was too reminiscent of The Sopranos.

Otherwise, I enjoyed the episode. But it was depressing to learn that the actor who played White Tiger, Kamar de los Reyes, died of cancer in 2023.

They are being a little heavy handed with the corrupt cop = punisher logo thing. Punisher worship among the police is a real problem, it doesn’t help to correlate them to only the criminal cops.

I liked episode three even more. Steady improvement. I liked the parallels between Matt and Fisk with their injured hands. I liked Matt’s “I’m so helpless” act in the bathroom with the cop. And I was genuinely surprised by the ending.

Something I am finding interesting is that back when watching the Netflix show I thought Fisk was the best part of the show but in this incarnation, I am finding his story often tedious and I want them to get back to Matt.
