Danny, I’m afraid we’re going to have to agree to disagree, here.
I look over what N/A has written (specifically, the Mormonism thread, the Headlights thread, the “High! I’m _____” thread, the “I’m so embarrassed” thread, and the “Breast Enlargement” thread) and I see a very hyper-defensive person. Slightly joking material, or general joshing, or attacks upon his poorly stated/documented position invariably caused N/A to have a minor case of apoloplexy and wax wroth against Frankie, against Satan, against andros, and against David B.
Other people may have pushed N/A past the breaking point, but I feel that:

N/A encouraged them by being antagonistic towards them; fighting fire with fire begets return fire.
N/A’s breaking point was infentesemal in relation to the average poster’s, and things an overwhelming majority of posters take in stride caused N/A to return with violent reactions.
N/A had yet to prove himself by posting accurate information to GQ or GD before jumping into starting threads in MPSIMS and relating urban legends in GQ, which makes it hard for people to take him particularly seriously.
I don’t think anyone but N/A did anything particularly wrong.
Oh, and Wally- that was a bit over the edge. Get some bed rest, friend.

The bolded section shows that very well. Pushing someone past a “breaking point” on a message board sounds more insane than any comment made here, ever. This isnt a place where people are to be broken. Is this a war camp? Boot Camp? Or is this a message board? The statement, “N/A encouraged them by being antagonistic towards them; fighting fire with fire begets return fire”, shows that here (on the boards) we believe that any error or attempt at self defense is provocation enough to attack more. What is an average posters breaking point anyway? Is there an index where I can view this? So that in the future I can gauge my attacks to be sure I dont exceed the “prescribed point of abuse for an average poster”? As far as the UL? Have we all not at least once believed a UL even to some degree. Further more I was in high school at around the same point in time Newton was. Our school also gave us the “safety” meetings he spoke of. It was told to us by the administration that such events had “actually in fact” happened in Northern California. Was I to call them liars then? I accepted what I was told apparently as he did as well. Is there no one else in California that ever heard this? If so do your civic duty and step forward and say so. All arguments aside I see both sides. Newtons name-user (as I dont believe it was him) was civil for a while and then became violent. What caused it? Perhaps every factor we have noted played some part in this. Thats not the point though. What I am aphalled by is the boards inability to let it go and ignore or not sanction such attacks. Now argue that.

I also plan to look into the remark once made by Newton that he had been in the military. Perhaps you underestimate your opponent Glitch. Then again maybe not. We can only guess from here.

Dannyboy, you are entitled to your opinion. Feel free not to provoke Newton all you like.

However, I am basing this on years of study on the subject (generally, it is considered to be poor taste to say … “Well, I could disprove you but I won’t”, all I can say is “Sure.”). I haven’t taken the time to learn about this subject simply to have it go to waste. It would be like deBecker (I am not equating myself to his level of knowledge) getting an obviously phony death threat and getting all worked up about it. He hasn’t become the expert he is simply to throw it all away.

I know for certain that this guy is no threat. It would be silly of me to ignore all of my training and study and let some overblown windbag make me feel even the slightest twinge of fear. If I wanted to do that I could have remained ignorant of all the stuff I have learnt and saved myself a lot of time, trouble and money.

This guys threats are phony. There is no cause for concern.

And it is not very obvious to me as well that formerposter/NA is MikeLikesIt, GigolosMan and FormerAgent. This only adds to the fact that he is not capable of action. There is no danger, and hence no cause for concern. I may sound “cock-sure” but my physics professor sounded pretty “cock-sure” when he listened to my half-baked physics ideas and told me they were junk. Of course, he did! He had 30 years of physics knowledge riding behind him. This isn’t to say somebody with knowledge is always right, but in this case it sure does give me a lot of leeway.

But, you’ll notice that the motto of the Straight Dope column is “fighting ignorance.” Believing in an UL is ignorance of the truth. Believing that the Great Flood in the Bible has been proven to be a historical event is ignorance. Ergo, we fight it by providing the correct information.

Argue what? That Newton should have been able to insult David B.- or any other poster- without fear or reprisal or removal? If Newton had done it in the Pit, then no Moderator would have jumped in unless death threats were involved. Notice that no Moderator every made any official statement about N/A’s statements here in the Pit. Note that TubaDiva’s statements were in response to N/A’s statements in GD.

In other words, if you call me a hoary little cock-muncher here in the Pit, no big deal. This is the place for that. If I call you a hoary-little ass goblin in Great Debates, I get a warning, just like N/A did. And if I continue to insult you, your parentage, and your friends, I will get banned.

Yes, I was worried about making a false accusation. I did it anyway because I felt pretty sure he would give himself away.

He started posting right at the time former poster stopped.

His syntax wording and style are identical.

His arguments aren’t just similar, they are the same. He chides me for betraying NA in my Groundhog thread, when in fact NA only posted there twice. While he was nice, it seemed his primary motive was to recruit resentment against DavidB.

Put yourself in a valid new posters shoes and try to imagine someone coming here to this thread at this time, to pick up the arguments of somebody who was banned just hours before, and was generally not liked.

Most people who are new make a few innocuous posts to test the waters before they jump into the middle of a flame war in the Pit that had nothing to do with them.

Lessee if I have this right: the OP was an attack on David’s performance as moderator and a demand that he step down or be removed. Newton’s Apple then morphed into Formerposter, but in reality Former was a demented housesitter. In this giddy exchange David was informed of his growing legion of rabid enemies who could just maybe show up at the Springfield get-together.

In true loyal Doper fashion, posters heroically offered to hide behind him at the restaurant when the mob attacked, waving pitchforks and flaming torches.

But the peripatetic weirdo house-sitter then morphed into SinsApple, but she’s rumored to be a girl, and then Formerposter pulled off his mask and was revealed to be Formeragent, who (possibly in an incestuous relationship with SinsApple) was the progenitor or clone of Mikey and Lurker007.

Then Danny appeared from the swirling mist; the mysterious stranger in town, come to clean up the corruption. So he was promptly subjected to an examination to make sure he wasn’t…I’ve lost track whom. Wally expressed some relatively mild exasperation and was rebuked for temper, with references to his heart condition.

Tom weighed in with his ususal balanced, sane analysis. Tom was clobbered for leaving all those cooler-and-armchair ghouls waiting with frustrated bloodlust for him to level Mipsman to a puddle of quivering goo. Until it was noted that Mipsman could really be the evil twin of NA, or Formerposter who was really formeragent but could possibly have been PitBullDawg…

As an certified cooler-and-armchair ghoul, I am mostly awed that the Springfield Doper meeting bodes well to outshine even the Houston/NY’ers bash and Chef Troy’s big-boobed Dallas pursuits.
