DayZ: True zombie survival horror

Woops, forgot the link. Here.

Anybody playing tonight? I’m by the deer stand near Kamyshovo, with med supplies and no weapon to speak of. So… ready to die I guess.

That was hilarious.

Spawned among about a half-dozen zeds. Spent about 10 minutes crawling to shelter. Using this map, and landscape clues, I figured I was between Prigosomething and Elektro, and made my way to a barn - there were three double-barreled shotguns! Grabbed one, and promptly fell out of the hay loft and went into shock. Dumbass. Very tense game, though, for newbies. Especially me, not being familiar with FPS strategy and tactics.

I keep getting stuck in “slow” mode - crouching or standing, just going very slowly. I can double-tap W to run, but I can’t walk at normal speed, just super-slow. The control menu says that 2XL-shift toggles this, but it never works. I have to log out and then back in. Is there a key I’m missing, or is this a glitch?

Joe

Yes, it wasn’t like a town on fire, it was part of the sky on fire. The game slowed to a relative crawl, and no matter now far I ran, the flame lit up the night.

Joe

It has to be left shift to toggle walk/run, maybe that’s it? Otherwise that is indeed the way default way to toggle walk/run.

BTW, double tap W is a different run than the normal jog - it’s more of a sprint where you slow down after a while, and it drains your food/water meter faster.

I went to 4 deer stands and a barn looking for a weapon, no luck. Still got a fair amount of liquids, plus a can or two of food. And if I bump into wildlife I do have a hunting knife, matches and a hatchet. I find that I like sticking to the woods, I’m terrified of going into cities and bump into other survivors. I’m also finding that I like best when it’s dusk, the zombies lose a lot of their ability to see you but you can still see them pretty clearly.

Yeah, I was using left-shift. Oh, well, no big deal.

Joe

Go to the key bindings and double check that you didn’t change anything. I’m not sure what the option is called for sure but it’s probably something like run/walk toggle. Try binding it to another key to see if that works.

Tent storage limits:

5 backpacks
10 weapons and tools
50 general items

Backpacks are… backpacks.
Weapons and tools include primary and secondary weapon. Tools are anything that goes on the toolbelt - hunting knife, map, compass, matches, etc. I think binoculars are a tool too.
General items are pretty much everything else. Mags, food, medicine, etc.

Every item takes up one of those slots in a tent, so you don’t have to worry about your weapon taking up 10 slots or whatever.

If you exceed these limits your items will fall out of the tent on the ground rather than just dissapear like they do on your backpack.

DayZ has its ow Tropes page.

If anyone needs help please ask Senorbeef for the vent info. Many of us grizzled bean eatin’ vets can help with some initial gear and some beans.

So I’m told there’s a new hack out for day z and it’s pretty widespread - people are able to teleport you around or kill you or otherwise ruin your day.

They will squash it and ban a bunch of people, but they may give it a week first to get data on everyone doing it. If it’s as widespread as suggested, it may be futile to play in the immediate future or at least risky - you could die unfairly at any moment, which, if you spent a lot of time collecting gear, will make you punch a hole through your dog.

Not sure if we’re going to be having weekend SDMB games under these circumstances. Gotta try to figure out how bad it is.

Does anyone know of any U.S. servers (Western and Regular, ideally) that are reliably on an “opposite” daylight schedule? I have heard that some servers do this - server time is daytime when other servers are nighttime. Most of my playing time will be at night, like now (10 PM Pacific and later), and I really dislike playing when it’s night in-game. When I filter the servers by server time, I’ve found that DayZ Commander is often wrong, and I have trouble finding a local server that’s on daylight.

To speak in these types of games, one needs a microphone, presumably? Something like this? Any recommendations, reasonably priced (not cheap-ass, necessarily)? Then I need Ventrilo, which is a free program, I hope?

Haven’t had a chance, but I’ll fart around with it.

I’ve probably spent as much time on the DayZ forums as playing - it’s been all over the forums since I started reading them the other day. I haven’t run across any obvious hacks yet (only encountered one player ever, and he sniped me without me ever seeing him), but this one seems like utterly pointless grief. Not even fun, fucking-around type griefing, just pointless.

Joe

If dying to a hacker and potentially losing hours worth if your work is unacceptable…

…well. Can I buy your CD key? Hackers are unfortunately part of this game and significantly more damaging due to the persistence of the inventory/character system. It’s a real bummer.

I just suggest that everybody get used to quickly closing your game if you see yourself teleported onto many many other players.

In less depressing news, it’s a full moon. Yup, Arma uses a real-time lunar cycle, which has major impacts on how playable night is. Currently, even those unfortunately without nightvision goggles will be able to enjoy a icy, moonlit nightscape if they so choose.

I suggest everybody try playing DayZ at night, at least once, with the music on. It’s an intense experience.

Well, you already did, but sure.

I understand hackers are part of the normal background dangers of the games, but from the sound of it (and I haven’t confirmed this, just going by what I heard) there’s an unusual boost in hackers lately due to the release of some new hack.

I’m willing to accept the background normal level of hackers (only had 2 encounters with them so far, not that big a deal), but if suddenly they’ve multiplied several times, I’m staying away. I’d rather not deal with that frustration. Once they do the next mass bannings and the danger has passed then I’ll come back.

But it depends on how widespread it is. If it’s just a 10% chance I’ll encounter something like that throughout a full day, no big deal. If it’s closer to 50/50, I’m not signing up for the headache.

Just had a tense experience at night - spent about 30 minutes making my way to Pusta, North of Elektro. Aggroed about a zillion zombies and got chewed on, after much careful stealth. But the game looks great at night - gamma and brightness turned up brings out the movement well. It rained for about 10 minutes, very hard, which taxed my system a little - when I took shelter under a tree, the FPS seemed to increase noticeably. The music at night is nice. I’m changing my opinion on night gaming a little…

Yeah we had some issues with hackers on two separate servers minutes apart. Thankfully Captain_C crashed and I was aware of the teleport hack from the official forums. So Torus and I quickly dced, as soon as the screen loaded me and everyone on the entire map in the middle of the airfield.

After a quick login on another server, I was back on Green Mountain, so the quick dc was effective.

Ventrilo is free and a headset is preferable. I use a $53 Logitech USB.

First other player I ever encountered was right after my very first spawn. I didn’t have my headset on and he kept asking “Are you friendly? Are you friendly?” like a lost puppy. I’m like, “Hell, I’m not even armed!”
