Dead Set

I’m sure there was a thread a while ago with someone talking about the (then) upcoming Dead Set on e4. Here’s a trailer for anyone who hasn’t seen what it’s about. Basically zombies with a good measure of laughing at big brother. Written by Charlie Brooker, whose regular column in comment is free is excellent.

Has anyone else been watching this? I saw the first hour-long episode and just finished the second. I think it’s been enjoyable, not too serious and very, very gory! There’s the usual annoying people that don’t quite act as you want them to do in panic madness, but that’s part of the territory with zombie films, right?

The zombie Davina McCall has made the whole thing worth it, IMO.

Just one bump…is no-one else interested in this?

I was all ready to hate it since, to me, Big Brother represents the worst and most shameless aspects of reality television, and I wasn’t interested in it even in a fictional context with the potential for contestants to be eaten by zombies. Still, I watched it on a whim.

During part 1 of episode 1, my fears were confirmed. It was the most insipid and painful television I’d ever seen, and I was ready to completely write off the show because surely zombies couldn’t save it. Then part 2 started, and my opinion completely flipped – this show is amazing. I’d put it on par with being movie-quality, only with slower pacing. It’s also good that they made episode 1 twice the length, so that the boring part was just a quarter of the initial presentation instead of being half.

Anyway, I’m hooked.

I liked the shot of the zombie watching Big Brother…

Charlie Brooker is made of pure win, and so is this. Fast zombies though? We’re all doomed.

It’s good. 28 Days Later with a few gags. I guess was expecting it to be absolutely brilliant and original, but it’s standard zombie fare so far. I’m actually enjoying the bits that take place outside the house more than the BB satire, which seems like it’s been done before.

OK, tonight’s episode was indeed brilliant. “Patrick, I’m coming to get you!”
Loved the bit when he was disembowelling Grayson too. Patrick’s episode all round, really.

And tomorrow night, it’s all over… just when I was starting to really get into it. Strange format, spreading a film length drama over five daily episodes.

I’m looking forward to watching this. I love Charlie Brooker.

I just watched the whole thing (DVR off of IFC) and while I generally enjoyed it, I’m always a little frustrated how overly-dependent zombie tales are on some completely selfish A-hole who has no qualms about immediately dooming every other human to death to save their own skins. Sure, I suppose there are people like that out there, but it’s a meme that too often proves a lynchpin for these kinds of stories. Still, while I’ve never seen Big Brother, this show confirmed how insufferable such a show really must be, and it was all a lot of fun.
