'Deadliest Catch' captain suffers stroke

Story here.

“Phil” bubbled up out of my brain before I even finished reading the thread title.

At least the CM was in port — if they had been out on the grounds I wouldn’t have given a Confederate nickel for his chances.

Here’s wishing him the best possible recovery.

That sucks. :frowning: I enjoy Phil and his sons on the show very much. Hope he comes out alright.

I hope Phil does ok. I wonder if that clot in his lung lead to a stroke? The Docs didn’t seem too happy with him returning to fishing. Phil mentioned he had to make a lot of changes in his lifestyle.

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought “Captain Phil!” I hope he has a swift recovery.

I also immediately thought of Phil, although there was one episode a couple of years ago where Sig was having chest pains during a run. I hope for a fast and successful recovery.

Damn, yeah, I thought of Phil right away too, though now that Kolga mentions it, I do recall Sig having troubles as well.

Hope he is OK. He almost died recently when he had some blood clots in his lungs. He skipped a season for that.

Ah shit. I knew it had to be Phil too. He didn’t even stop smoking after the blood clot incident, did he? He’s my favorite captain on the show - cares about his crew, no stupid antics, and he can smell crab farts.

I think he still smokes. Usually a health scare gets people to stop smoking but some people are just too addicted.

Right ho - my mom had two open heart surgeries, a half dozen heart attacks, and a stroke and kept right on smoking. I think the only reason she stopped her last month of life was a combination of being literally too weak to raise her hand to her mouth and her dementia progressing to the point she forgot to ask for one. At that, I’m a little amazed she stopped at all prior to her death.

Some people just don’t quit. While that’s admirable in some endeavors it’s not so good in other areas.

Aww, that’s bad. :frowning:

Yeah, I definitely remember him smoking when he came back last season.

TMZ says he had 12 hour surgery and was put in a coma

'Deadliest Catch' Capt. Undergoes 12 Hr. Surgery

We had stopped watching this, but I remember who Phil is. I hope he’s alright. :frowning:

It’s one of my favorite shows and I add my hopes for Captain Phil’s swift and complete recovery.

We have a friend who was part of the series for a while, so it feels very close to home when something bad happens.

While I know that the pulmonary embolism wasn’t nearly as bad as it was said to be, but this sounds like a big deal. The fact that he’s still in Alaska bodes poorly for him. If he were stable, he’d be airlifted to Seattle. Twelve hours of surgery may mean an aneurysm rather than a clot.

Not that I consider TMZ a ‘source’, but at least they have good news.

He’s now apparently breathing on his own, regaining feeling on his left side, and cussing. Atta boy, Phil!

Probably cussing about not being allowed cigarettes in the ICU.

Sig is still my favorite captain (he’s the Han Solo of crab boat skippers), but I’ve a soft spot for Phil based on his lack of real evil, and his ability to keep from killing his two sons.

Yeah, my mom used to bitch about that all the time. It’s really the only time I remember her using four-letter words.

I loathe TMZ on principle, but whenever I’ve seen them cited as a source, they’ve turned out to be correct, damn them.
