Also, Spider-Man reference!
I wouldn’t suggest Logan because that movie relies heavily on the history of professor x and wolverine. She’s unlikely to appreciate it as much as if she watched a bunch of X-Men stuff first. Also, it’s a different timeline?
Probably the best comics movie, just dinner like it as background.
That seems to be the consensus. The time travel shenanigans of X-Men: Days of Future Past is apparently considered the starting point for a timeline shift.
Deadpool as a mute combo-mutant (i.e., not like the comics) is from before the timeshift. Deadpool from the Deadpool films and this one (“The Merc with the Mouth”) is after the shift.
That’s how the radical differences in the character is retconned, anyway. (For those who are even willing to acknowledge that the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine is supposed to be Deadpool. Or that the movie even happened. Like the mythical sequels to The Matrix.)
Okay, I’ve watched it. It was pretty good, but I think I actually liked Deadpool 2 more. (I rewatched the first two this week.) There are at least three significant cameos that weren’t shown in the trailers.
Loved it. No notes, go watch it.
Saw Deadpool and Wolverine on Friday and loved it. I laughed my ass off in a number of spots. Probably only caught 60% of the Easter eggs, and still thought it was packed with them.
A couple of random thoughts (the thread title says, “open spoilers,” so beware):
The Chris Evans reveal was so well done. I should have realized that Captain America would not be in The Void, but since I had completely forgotten about his Johnny Storm, it was easy to lead me on like they did. I can’t believe they were able to keep that under wraps.
The actress who played Cassandra Nova looked so much like James McEvoy that it was easy to buy her as Xavier’s sister. Good casting.
I completely missed Henry Cavill’s cameo. I could tell that the actor wasn’t Hugh Jackman, but that’s as far as my brain got.
I love Matthew Macfadyen as a slimy middle-management type. He’s just got a face for it.
Short Wolverine!
Loved the Daredevil reference and the little shrug Jennifer Garner gave. Nice little meta-reference.
Since I find thick Cajun accents damn near incomprehensible, I have no idea if Channing Tatum’s accent work was good, intentionally bad, or something else. Was a lot of fun, though.
Excellent post-credits scene.
I will definitely have to watch this again in a format where I can pause it to look at some of the details. I mean, it’ll probably take me 6 hours or so, but I enjoy all the littl ethings that were thrown in there.
What was it with Wolverine’s mask the last 20 minutes or so? This looked like really bad CGI. Wasn’t that Hugh Jackman? Did they have reshoots with a stand-in?
Definitely intentionally bad.
Some cameos you may have missed because most of them were wearing masks:
The family:
Blake Lively - Ladypool
Inez Reynolds - Kidpool
Olin Reynolds - Babypool
James Reynolds - Screaming Mutant
Betty Reynolds - Hugh Jackman Wrangler (not actually seen, but that’s how she’s credited)
Gordon Reynolds - Nicepool (actually Ryan again, but he’s got a running gag about having a “nice” twin brother named Gordon)
Wrexham:
Rob McIlhenney - TVA Soldier
Paul Mullin - Welshpool
Ollie Palmer - Bar Patron
Other goofballs:
Nathan Fillion - Headpool
Matthew McConnaughey - Cowboy Deadpool
We laughed as well. Hey, she’s coolw with it!
I was surprised they mentioned Hugh Jackman’s divorce.
“He’s usually shirtless, but really let himself go since the divorce.”
Damn, man. I love that Hugh surely let them use that line.
I think my favorite line was “He died by murder, you dumb fuck”. I can’t wait to see some elegant fanart, maybe some chibi cutesy shit with that scrawled across it
Two notes:
Honda seems to have a sense of humor.
Some time after watching it it occurred to me that the “super hard to eat” exchange from just about every piece of pre-release publicity wasn’t in the movie.
I kind of loved the movie and I loved:
“There’s only been ONE Blade…and there’s only ever gonna be ONE Blade.”
Uh…
and:
“Welcome to the MCU. You’re entering at a bit of a low-point.”
And:
“Oh my God, he’s going to say Avengers Assemble!”
Chris Evans: “Flame on!!!”
Whaaaaaaat?
By the way, Snipes looked great. Maybe…they should just bring his Blade into the MCU.
One thing it took me a moment to notice: DP gives a spiel about how hot dog carts always have emergency medical supplies in them (Wolverine: “They don’t”), but they are literally standing in front of a pharmacy/medical center.
The scenes with Dogpool were fantastically over-the-top. Cassandra Nova was also incredible, though the fingers through the face towards the end was just enough to squick me out.
Johnny Storm was always the trash talker of the Fantastic Four, but hearing Deadpool-level shit-talk come from Chris Evans’s mouth was just chef’s kiss.
And the opening credits are the best of the series, hands down, accept no competitors. Music selection was top-notch as well. The callbacks to The Greatest Showman hit the spot.
I echo everything @carlb said!
I am pretty ignorant of most of Marvel, including X-Men and Deadpool (I saw his first movie but don’t quite remember the plot) but this movie was a laugh riot! I knew enough to get by, just by osmosis.
I did know the Chris Evans/Johnny thing but it I didn’t realize I did until he flamed up. SO GOOD.
All the 4th wall stuff alone was comedy gold.
I liked it but didn’t love it. It was cool seeing all those X Men/ FF actors again. I completely forgot there was going to be a Channing Tatum Gambit movie until he showed up and I didn’t recognize the actor who played Pyro (X2 is such a great movie) right away even though they literally showed him snuff out Johnny Storm with his power.
One thing: I get this was a comedy first but I didn’t quite get how or why the Interview scene in the beginning in 2018 said it was in Universe 616.
I was hoping for the remote chance if a breif cameo of Gwenpool in the Deadpool core, but I suppose it would have stolen a lot of the distinctiveness from Lady Deadpool. (Like Jeff would have taken away from Dogpool.)
