Deadpool and Wolverine (new trailer in OP, open spoilers)

New trailer.

Yet another one:

That shot where they fall on the van looks very off, like Deadpool was photoshopped in.

Seeking advice and opinions.

My wife loved “Deadpool,” despite not liking violence and gore in movies, and not really being into superhero stuff. I suspect it is Ryan Reynolds’s charm that does it (same reason she liked “Iron Man” but couldn’t care less about the rest of the MCU). I am sure that a number of the insider jokes/Easter eggs went right past her. She seemed to like “Deadpool 2” well enough. We’ve got tickets to see “Deadpool and Wolverine” next Friday.

So - trying to figure out what might be essential watching between now and then. I’m thinking:

  • Deadpool (duh)
  • X-Men (the first)
  • Logan
  • Deadpool 2

I can’t decide whether to squeeze in “X2” somewhere along the way; it does dive into Wolverine’s backstory some more. I’m not looking to get her completely, 100% up-to-speed on the larger MCU. Just enough that she’ll get some of the plot points and jokes.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

There is this, FWIW:

That article sounds promising. I think the Deadpool movies break the fourth wall enough (and flaunt it) that they’d call out any important context anyway. Even without having read the article above, this would be the superhero movie I’d sweat homework for the least

You might miss some fanservice-y in-jokes, but I suspect they’ll be so foot-stomped that you’ll know you missed something rather than completely missing the “whoosh”.

I don’t think I’ve ever asked this before, but what is the history of the relationship between Deadpool and Wolverine. Deadpool starts his first movie with…

There’s definitely some antagonism between them, and it seems like it must go back to the comics, but I don’t know any more than that. Is it ever explained, or does Deadpool just like teasing someone who is so intense and humorless?

And now that I think about it, what’s the deal with Deadpool and unicorns?

As you might expect with two long-running characters, there is a complex history.

Deadpool in the comics started as a straight-up bad guy who was mildly snarky, but proved popular so the snark was cranked up to 11 and became an antihero. Who really wants to hang with the X-Men and especially Wolverine but is mostly disliked because he is an amoral mercenary who murders people for money (sometimes, when he isn’t trying to be better).

The joke you mentioned is probably largely based on the fact that Wolverine (despite historical issues preventing him from appearing in the MCU) is probably the single most popular character in all of Marvel comics. If they were just going with man-crushes, they could also have gone with Spider-Man, who Deadpool also wants to be best buds with. They have a 50 issue comic together.

Wolverine? Green Lantern? Not sure if there’ll be more callbacks to those two previous Reynolds superhero outings, like there have been. I’d hope there’d be references to the first, at least.

For me, at least, there’s an added layer in that I don’t think anyone expected the cinematic Wolverine to be so popular. I seem to remember a lot of pre-release griping about Hugh Jackman not having the right physique; Wolverine wasn’t a character that the larger non-comic reading audience was familiar with; there was no guarantee X-Men would become a successful franchise.

I see it as a subtle joke in the vein of, “hey, if Hugh Jackman/Wolverine can become a breakout star and you can build entire movies around him, why not me?”

OTOH, maybe I’m reading waaaayyyyy too much into it.

No way am I putting myself through “Green Lantern” again, let alone my wife. I had to explain the “Green Lantern”-related jokes in the previous films, but I think she’s got the basic idea now.

I don’t remember enjoying “Wolverine” all that much, either, and I think there’s enough backstory for Wolverine in “X-men” and “X2” for my wife to follow along anything referencing those (if they occur). I do think I’ll fill her in on the previous iteration of Deadpool, though.

Personally, I’d rewatch/review the Loki miniseries. Especially since this movie deals with the TVA, variants and all that multiverse bullstuff.

Wolverine and Deadpool aren’t especially antagonistic towards each other in the comics. Most other heroes in the Marvel universe can’t stand Deadpool, though, so that doesn’t say much. If anything, Wolverine tends to be more sympathetic to Deadpool than most other heroes, since they’re both victims of the Weapon-X program.

Wolverine is also Marvel second most popular character (second only to Spider-Man), and gets thrown into tons of crossovers. I think the line you’re asking about is mostly a meta-joke - he’s implying that Wolverine is so popular that his fictional character has enough pull to make decisions for the real-life Marvel corporation.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are also IRL friends, and like to give each other shit in public, so this line was probably a bit of an inside dig at his friend’s most successful roll.

I started watching (but didn’t finish) X-Men Origins: Wolverine the other night. Early on, Logan and Wilson are part of the same mercenary team until Logan gets disgusted and quits. At around the point I paused the movie, it seemed like someone was bumping off members of the old team one by one, and it’s implied (maybe even stated outright) that Wilson is dead. So I need to finish watching to see how it all resolves, but that movie seems to be the beginning of the relationship between the two.

That movie isn’t connected to the Deadpool movies and in fact is famously reviled for its depiction of Deadpool.

Good to know! I noticed a few weeks ago that Disney+ had all the X-Men movies now, so I’m slowly making my way through all of those. I thought it might give me some Deadpool/Wolverine background, but maybe not.

The final trailer just dropped. Some new scenes and dialog.

In that movie Deadpool has been tattooed with black lines for some reason, has no mouth (really, just a blank patch of skin), has an adamantium sword built into each arm, and has Cyclops laser eyes.

Holy crap, Dafne Keen is a lying liar who lies.
