Dealing With Online Trolls

I was listening to comedy radio, and a woman was talking about massive multiplayer games. I do not play these myself.

The speaker had played these for twenty years and said 85% of players had mainly positive experiences and long-standing friendships. She claimed that 75% of players had suffered some harassment. Big companies were loathe to deal with this since money - and little incentive to deal with one complaint.

But then she claimed one company took people who repeatedly quit or had multiple complaints and just made these misfits play against each other. Still could make money and more people happy.

Is this a true story? Would it work? Should it?

I don’t know if it’s true, but something similar happens in the fictional MMORPG Mythic Quest on the show of the same name.

It could work to some extent, but just like any other system online it would be open to abuse. People who think it’s their right to be an asshole without suffering consequences would gang up on people they didn’t like and mass report them to have them sent to the Bad Place.

In a way, this happened with Elite: Dangerous. Virtually all of the “normal” players joined private groups, leaving everyone else in Open play.
