:( [Death of Oliver Postgate]

Goodbye Oliver Postgate. Won’t mean much to all the Americans here I suppose. Any Brits care to commiserate/celebrate, whatever.

Bagpuss gave a big yawn, and settled down to sleep.
And of course, when Bagpuss goes to sleep all his friends go to sleep too.
The mice were ornaments on the mouse-organ.
Gabriel and Madeleine were just dolls.
And Professor Yaffle was a carved wooden bookend in the shape of a woodpecker.
Even Bagpuss himself, once he was asleep, was just an old, saggy cloth cat.
Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams.
But Emily loved him.

I so loved his stuff as a kid. It had a melancholy that worked so well.

Ivor was my personal favourite. Although I did love Bagpuss

The word that always pops into my head in relation to his work is wistful.

It’s sacrilege, I know, but I find Bagpuss tedious in the extreme. Perhaps I was too old?

My favourite Smallfilms offerings are Noggin the Nog, Ivor the Engine, The Pingwings (which nobody seems to remember at all). But best of all, Pogle’s Wood.

It has to be *Ivor the Engine *for me. RIP

Noggin the Nog was a childhood favourite…

Ah, now that is sad news. Ivor the Engine was my favourite, and I can still do a mean impersonation of the old fella puffing away.

Here’s the Telegraph obit:

I didn’t know that Professor Yaffle was based on Bertand Russel!

I recon you could guess the age of everyone in this thread by their favourite Smallfilm. I only just remember Noggin the Nog and Pogles Wood I’m a bit clearer on Ivor the Engine (remember Idris the dragon who slept in Ivor’s firebox?). I was a bit too old for ‘kids’ shows by the time of Bagpuss.

Anyone want to guess my favourite?

I’ll watch the Rock Collector tonight in memory. A quick read of the synopsis in that link might give some non-Brits a clue what they missed as kids.

This homage to that episode is often posted on moon landing conspiracy threads.
