Decemberrants: Yule post'em here, plz

Well, the average cheese at the store here comes in mild, medium and old. Basically old has a stronger flavour to it. Last time I made it I used two year old cheese, which I treat myself to sometimes. Or even the five year old. Mmm. Is it a Canadian thing? Maybe.

Thanks for all the recipes; I may never have to go to Red Lobster and have lukewarm biscuits again.

We would call it “sharp” cheddar.

Good grief, I hope my sister learns to dial it down. We had our family christmas this weekend because she wouldn’t be here the 25th and everyone else stuck to the standard $25-50 dollar range but she and her fiance blew past that getting me a stand mixer and my brother a 3DS. I love you sis, but I’m not going to break the bank on your christmas present so I’d suggest ratcheting down that spirit of giving.

My grandmother died.

{{Helena330}} Sorry to hear that.

I’m so sorry for you and your family. Sounds like it was time for her to go … ? (Not like that ever makes anything any easier.)

(((Helena330))) Very sorry to hear this.

Just in time for the holidays, there are again abandoned kitties here at work. I love working in a wooded setting but damn, the animals dumped here can make if so stressful. This time it’s a mother and two kittens. We’ve seen the mom around for a week or so. Someone saw her with a mouse in her mouth last week so we had decided to just let her be. But today I saw the two kittens. They are living up in an old delivery truck that’s been parked in the woods behind our buiding for years. (And is a popular place for kitties to end up.) So now we will have to do something. We can’t let a feral population get started. But it’s going to have to wait until after the holidays. No one wants to deal with it right now. I’d brought some food in for the mom today (which is how I discovered the kittens, who look to be about 6-8 weeks old) so I guess I’ll just feed them until we can figure out what to do. This brings the total for the year to 13 cats/kittens and 2 puppies found. :frowning:

You are a swell person aurora maire; bless you for taking care of the babies and the mom. If you’d like contributions to the rescue cause and have paypal, PM me. 'Tis the season, after all.

People are bastards.

Dear random people sitting in front of us at the ballet: no, your newborn twins don’t enjoy loud music and clapping, so you probably shouldn’t take them to the ballet. And passing them back and forth doesn’t make them shut up. Now, please fuck off.

Weirdo.

kayT, what a sweet offer and I really appreciate the thought. But there are folks here who pitch in to buy food on these occasions and so far we’ve always been able to find homes. I talked to someone today who said her son is looking for a kitten and she can probably talk him into taking two. So we’ll just have to figure out something for the momma.

It’s going to be in the low 20s tonight so at lunch I went to the thrift store and found a large polyester-type standup laundry bag and got some puffy jackets and a blanket. I fixed it up and laid it down under the truck. Hopefully, they’ll get in there where it will at least be soft and maybe somewhat warm.

And on another note, earlier some of my co-workers rescued a sick dog they found down the street and took him to a vet. They didn’t come back so hopefully I’ll find out tomorrow if he was ok. He could have wandered here but we are miles from any residential area. So probably another dump. :frowning:

(((Helena330))) I am truly sorry for your loss.

aurora maire You just fucking rock.

Yeah, well, you are probably one of those people who think that a windless, sunny 50 F (10 C) day is warm. I already know that Cat Whisperer is. She was out in that blizzard voluntarily. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’d even get out of bed with that sort of weather happening around me.

Right now it’s a balmy -12F. I may have to get a jacket out.

Yeah, right now, I’d appreciate 0F. That’s be nice and warm.

Do they still have K-turns on the driver’s license test? I ask because that’s the closest related skill to backing out of a parking space and turning. I see people (usually in huuuuuge vehicles) pull straight, halfway out, stop, and THEN start turning the wheels. Don’t they know you should start turning the wheels as soon as you’re nearly clear of the car in the next spot, with the car still moving? It turns much easier that way.

Temps were pushing 70F yesterday and in the 50’s today. I had to turn the window a/c on. Had lots of rain that probably would have been snow so I was happy. Whenever you kick off the first full day of winter with a record high temp, it gives me reason to feel hopeful for the rest of the season. It doesn’t really mean jack since all it takes is a detour in the jet stream and I’ll have tusk-like snot-cicles just from going out to get the mail. But I try to be optimistic.
