A little while back I noticed this bumper sticker on the car of an apparently otherwise sweet old lady. It said “Abortion, Euthanasia, AIDS: Don’t Liberals Just Kill Ya?” I understand how she thought abortion and euthanasia was supported by liberals. But how do far-right wing people figure liberals are responsible for AIDS? Last time I checked, most so-called liberals wanted to stop AIDS. What did this bumper sticker mean by this?
I just want to know what the bumper sticker meant. I am not trying to start a heated debate about far right wing fantatics. But I put my question in GD just to be on the safe side.
I take it to mean that the spread of AIDS is attributable to lax liberal attitudes about sexual activity – acceptance of homosexuality and promiscuous hetereosexual activity. If the only sexual activity in society were within marriage, there would be no AIDS threat, and it’s the liberals who are responsible for urging us away from sex only within marriage.
Are you seriously telling us that you aren’t sure to what the bumper sticker was referring?
Really? You read that and there was no thought whatsover about “gay people”? You were honestly puzzled?
Not defending her… but I’m curious as to why you didn’t figure out that the sticker was referring to homosexuality. It seems rather (blatantly!) obvious.
Maybe that liberals were responsible for “sexual immorality”…the acceptance of premarital sex and homosexuality, and that that led to the spread of AIDS? That’s my guess.
I’m guessing that something was needed to make a proper list, and AIDs was the first thing that came into the mind of the person who wrote the copy. Or, more likely, that liberals are solely responsible for people becoming more sexually immoral, which leads to AIDs, which leads to death. Plus, there’s the whole forbidden homosexual sex angle. Which overlooks the fact that lesbians are the safest of all groups inre HIV infection, but it’s probably best not to go into that. Gives the pastor indigestion.
Ultimately, it’s a bumper sticker. I seldom if ever see something that even makes me chuckle stuck to the back of someone’s car, even when I agree with the sentiment. When it’s coming from the other side of the spectrum, well, beliefs don’t always equal reality.

It might not be that particular little old lady’s belief, but don’t be so sure there aren’t a few whackos out there who think Gay = AIDS, and if there were no Gays then there wouldn’t be AIDS.
Because liberals are gays, or they support gays, or they like gays, or they tolerate gays. And gay people caused AIDS. :rolleyes:
Honestly, that’s down there with the BULLSHIT sticker I saw recently. No thoughtful dialogue, just a sweeping generalization of one side of the political spectrum.

It’s the “euthanasia” part that strikes a jarring note with me. Liberals might be more inclined than conservatives to back Dr. Kevorkian, but don’t make a central issue of it. And I hope the silly biddy wasn’t thinking of the Terry Schiavo case! That was nothing but embarrassing, and not liberals!
And don’t forget that some of them want to teach sex education or allow condoms in schools. And Clinton got a blowjob, that probably factors in there somehow.
Granted that it’s not thoughtful - and it’s not witty either- but at least that’s a criticism of a particular individual. “Bush is full of bullshit” isn’t necessarily an indictment of conservatives as a whole.
Given that young women are supposed to be the fastest growing population of HIV victims, you guys might be over-thinking to point the finger at “gay” rather than simple “promiscuous.” It ain’t gay men and women she’s concerned are getting abortions, after all, and if you were a good Christian you wouldn’t be having gay sex so the liberals wouldn’t be killing you, now would they? You never know when that “nice girl” you bring home turns out to be a hussy who’s been around the block more times than the ice cream truck… Stickers like that are why I prefer to design my own.
In that case, it’s an exceedingly mealy-mouthed and hypocritical sentiment. How ludicrous is it to forbid a large group from getting married and then condemn them for having sex outside of marriage?
