Defective top chrome tagline starting 2025-05-09

Using Edge on Win10 with SD light theme we have a new glitch. New as of this afternoon May 9 2025.

Across the top of every topic listing page (New, Unread, Latest, each category listing, etc.) when fully scrolled upwards there is the big blue banner with the yellow “The Straight Dope Message Board” graphic heading, then the “The Straight Dope” in ordinary slightly larger-than-normal type, then justified off to the right is the search magnifying glass, the hamburger menu, and the user’s icon. That part is unchanged. So far so good. But …

Just below that area within the area where the scrollable body content of the page goes is the “Fighting ignorance…” tagline in plain text anchored just below the bottom of the big blue banner. There’s 0 pixels of gap, so the topmost pixels of the tagline are lost against the banner. And it’s locked there so all the body text of the page scrolls under the tagline and the two types of content pile up destructively.

The same situation exists on a topic / thread display page. Except …
If you scroll down >~1 inch the blue title bar changes to display the thread title and category instead. At which point the spurious tagline disappears.

ETA: a complete cache clear, logout, etc., did not cure the problem.

Time for somebody to go back and tweak it again to be right.

Seeing the same thing on Firefox/Linux, BTW.

Yep:
Imgur

I usually run SD Dark theme (Win 11, Firefox 128.10.0esr). I don’t observe this effect.

When I switch to SD Light theme, I do see what’s been described, and also the other reported issue that avatar changes from a square to a circle.

It’s something about the SD Light theme that doesn’t seem to affect SD Dark. (At least, in my case.)

Also (and this is extremely minor), but the numeric indicator for unread message is now a purple/blue rather than yellow. Not really a fan.

Is this an effect of the same update that roundified the avatars?

It took me awhile to notice this because it didn’t affect my avatar at all.

As to the original subject, I don’t see it in Edge on W11, and I have SD Light.

ETA: Never mind, I cleared cache and see the issue now too.

My speculation is there was one update released which created both changes. The changes are unrelated except for being in the same release. IOW no cause/effect between them.

Just a hypothesis, in case it helps…

It looks like the generated “SD light theme” CSS at https://sea3.discourse-cdn.com/straightdope/stylesheets/desktop_theme_15_c2be2adfc9b9eefa0ac79b1f4d36de9cf5f05692.css is broken due to an SCSS compiler error. (The generated dark theme CSS still works.)

Putting a few things together, it looks like:

Evidence:

If you replace that broken autogenerated CSS with an older version from last month, the theme works again
