Defiance (new SyFy series/game/something) - any chance this is going to be good?

http://defiance.com/en/

Apparently it’s a combination of TV series and multiplayer online game, set on Earth, after a (seemingly somewhat botched) alien invasion/colonisation attempt.

I like the mix of spaceships and wild frontier (Firefly fan, what can I say?), but the clips I’ve seen so far look a little bit wobbly in terms of quality.

Any chance this is going to be great?

Nothing?

I’ll give it a shot.
It looks like it could go either way.

Nope. Nothing.

I expect to be playing the beta sometime this weekend.

It’s SyFy, so…no.

Nope. Not a chance.

This is the same channel that gave us Tremors: The Series so “not a chance” is a bit hasty.

The game itself is pretty good. Definitely a “Borderlands MMO set in Post Apocalyptic San Francisco area” vibe to it. First thing you do is survive a plane crash then are assisted by an AI implant to pick up a shield and better weapon.

No business purpose in going to that site, so, it’s gotta be good for something…

:BUMP:

This is premiering tomorrow. I’m going to record it and watch it Tuesday. I loved Farscape(same creator), I like Grant Bowler on the Mole(he’s the lead actor), and it has quite a few Battlestar folks involved, including Bear McCreary as the composer.

I don’t usually watch new shows until 5-10 episodes have aired, but I’m going to gamble and watch this one from the start.

Anyone else planning on watching? 9 PM Eastern on the Scifi Channel. I’m not calling them syfy no matter what they tell me.

It is set to record tomorrow night.
I hope it is good.

There’s really no chance that this will be good.

Saw the commercials. The ‘aliens’ are just people with white makeup and contacts.

Said ‘nope’.

Having not heard much about this, I was interested in it. Holding out hope for a good SF series, anyway.

I recorded the pre-pilot promo show last Monday and just watched it today. I don’t have much hope, now. I’ll watch a couple of episodes, just in case I’m being too pessimistic (plus, I feel I have an obligation to at least try to watch any SF series). We’ll see.

There were a number of things in the promo show that turned me off, but I’ll just mention one here. The premise of the show is that the entire planet has been transformed and inhabited by various alien races. All over the globe, human civilization has been (more than) decimated, and the remnants of each and every society must struggle in an entirely new environment, dealing with entirely new and unknown intelligent races of creatures who also must struggle to survive in a new world. However, the show itself takes place seemingly entirely in a 3 block by 4 block mining town that used to be St. Louis. Yeah. This has me thinking that the show will be as limited in imagination as it is in budget.

Actually, one more thing. The video game tie-in is kinda sorta new, the way it sounds like they’re doing it, so that’s cool. But the promo spent all of 4 minutes on that aspect of the project, during which they pretty much just explained what a video game is, what an MMO is, and that there will be vehicles. I felt like, as someone who is already familiar with the concept of a video game, they gave no hint as to what I might find worthwhile about theirs. Was it just a matter of choosing to direct their promo as broadly and accessibly as possible, or is there really nothing to recommend the game side of the project?

Maybe I am being too pessimistic, but so far, all signs point to “meh”.

I have a personal theory that the quality of a TV series is inversely proportional to how much advertising it receives. As the ads for this thing have been everywhere, it is going to be a big bag’o’suck.

I plan to check it out, I’ve liked the special effects and the premise so far. My fear is that they’ll rapidly drop the cool CGI stuff in favor of concentrating on the small problems of the particular mining town its set in, with the rest of the world providing nothing more than the occasional plot hook. I hope like hell I am wrong, but I know how cheap SyFy Channel is. My fear: Gunsmoke of the Future. “Marshall Dillon! Marshall Dillon! Them aliens is busting up the Long Branch again!”

God I hope I’m wrong.

Wait, mining town?? What are they mining? All we have here is limestone! Or are they “mining” the rubble from human civilization?

Also, those promos are driving me crazy. The only reason that the Arch stays up is that each leg is supported by the other leg; if there’s a break in the arch, both legs fall down.

I, for one, find it interesting that they’ve been advertising the hell out of it on WWE programming (as in the commentators themselves talking about how great it’s going to be), considering that Raw runs in the same time slot.

I can do without the spoilers before the commercial breaks.
