Democratic convention 2008 discussion thread

No it isn’t.

(there, back on track)

Wait- I have it! Ahem-

Michelle Obama thinks that Hawaii and Chicago are on the same continent! Maybe its that one with 47 states! HAW HAW!

Debate that shit, bitches.

At around what time did this happen? I’m trying to find it on cspan.org.

You can see it here, after a bit of punditry.

ETA: That oldest daughter is going to be a tall, stone-cold raving beauty! Jury is still out on the younger daughter.

PUMAs?

Explain, please.

“Party Unity My Ass” - so-called Democrats for McCain, comprised of disgruntled Hillary supporters and/or stealth Republicans.

Oh. I thought it might be some sort of play on the concept of cougars.

The public needs to be informed of this group and I expect extensive live video.

I thought Mrs. Obama was radiant as usual. She is going to make a fine first lady, she’s got an air of humble pie about her that I am very much attracted to. She’s not some heiress with tons of money - she’s a real go getter with ambitions and lively dreams for her family…

PUMAs are actually related to other mountain dwelling creatures which live in caves and turn to stone in the sunlight. Some species inhabit the spaces under bridges.

Meanwhile, I am really hoping that security is tight Thursday night.

Security will be tight and he’s not even president yet.

How do they account for high powered rifles fired from a mile away…what the heck can they do?

I don’t think it bodes well for the Democrats that Leach’s speech was so tepidly received. His speech was substantive and talked about the real issues and it appeared to me not many cared to hear it. The delegates were far more responsive to the feel good stuff.

I have no political affiliation and will be voting for Obama but it was disheartening he wasn’t better received.

Eh. It was a tepid speech at best. CNN tried to carry it but gave up on it as he was such a poor speaker. Yes, what he was saying was substantive, but how he delivered it was soporific. Day one in particular needed some emotion. Kennedy and Michelle/kids delivered it.

Matt Helm.

No to hijack even further…but how do they account for snipers…do they position the president where no shot can hit him? Or do they put up a glass blockade? Do we have the real equivalent to Matt Helm?

it was a very obama night. no frothing, no wild and crazy. just state the facts in a calm, cool manner. very much the way he was in the primary debates. he is the calm and steady in the storm. for a guy who grew up in places other than the midwest he really is a midwesterner. doesn’t say much but does much.

it doesn’t make for “red meat” as some were calling for. i figure that is why he picked biden. biden is the other half, the wild and frothy.

the wee obamas are adorable. you can see that both parents take great care in raising them. i can see why malia rolled her eyes and said “daddy TALKS to us” during the july 4th interview.

he is the type of guy that would sit down and calmly tell you why hammering nails into the coffee table is a bad idea. how beverage wouldn’t be able to be placed there, the danger of clothes snagging, or skin cutting, etc. most people who be pulling out thier hair and saying stuff like “what are you doing? aaaaiiiiieeee!!!”

a refreshing change from “bring it on” and “so?”

I don’t think he was a poor speaker. He’s not a flamboyant speaker but he spoke with as much passion as say Caroline Kennedy. In any event there’s way too much emphasis on how things are presented rather than what is presented and it doesn’t serve America well.

I have zero interest in what Michele Obama or any other relative they trot out thinks about anything.

And yet I cried my eyes out at two points - Kennedy and Michelle Obama (just as I’m sure was intended, and I don’t care; they were both very moving). When Ted Kennedy said that he would be there for the opening of Congress on Jan. 20, 2009, I bawled like a baby. I can only desperately hope he lives long enough to see the universal health care he’s been trying for for thirty years become a reality. Please, Og, let him hold on long enough!

I thought Leach spoke quite well, and it didn’t seem to me to be tepidly received, but I wasn’t measuring response.

Michelle’s speech is of interest because, unlike some wives of the past, she truly is the person with the most influence on Barack Obama in the world. That doesn’t mean that she’ll set individual policies for him; in fact, I suspect she’ll deliberately avoid doing that very thing. But she’ll be his sounding board, and she very definitely will be helping him to strike his general direction.

For example, W’s administration has very much moderated in the past couple of years. I don’t know what influence has caused that beyond the sheer balls up that his initial policies caused. But I could very readily see that kind of sea change being influenced (not initiated) by Michelle in Barack Obama. Politically, she’s never going to be the senior partner in that marriage, and she’s never going to try - it’s not what she wants. But she very definitely will be a part of the equation.

Michelle’s speech was fantastic, but can you imagine how it’s going to look compared to Cindy McCain’s next week? Assuming she gives one.

I just read on one of the blogs that Karl Rove was coming in to town to pundify for (I assume) Fox. It’s a shame the Democrats in Congress can’t get together and find him in contempt for ignoring their subpoena a few months back; marching Turd Blossom out in handcuffs would make it the best convention ever.
