Democratic convention 2008 discussion thread

What do you mean? That Cindy will give a better speech? I bet she takes some pot shots where Michelle didn’t… I don’t like Cindy McCain. She has always been the downer when thinking about McCain. I know she battled addiction and I know she has had her share of dirt cast her way, so I won’t sling any. But there is something fair and good about Michelle that Cindy simply lacks.

I just can’t imagine Cindy McCain moving a crowd the way Michelle did. Maybe I’m wrong, but somehow “a beautiful woman whose Dad with MS worked every day and who got into Princeton, only to return to help out people in her old neighborhood and end up meeting Barack Obama and have two of the cutest and nicest girls ever” seems more compelling than “formerly beautiful, now skeletal blonde beer heiress who was the other woman while John McCain cheated on his wife, whose Daddy paid for her husband to get into politics, who became addicted to painkillers and stole from her own charity to get them, who stole cookie recipes and tried to pass them off as her own, and who found that her children had filled up one vacation condo, so she just bought another.”

I found it rather sad that Nancy Pelosi, while puffing off the Congress’s accomplishments last night, didn’t touch on that. That’s one thing that can’t be vetoed, so why haven’t they done it?

oooooh, that would be lovely!

“sir, you have been found in contempt, please come with us.”

oy!, yep, they were very moving, and people def. heard and felt what they said. you didn’t have yelling and wanting to kick the the other side after thier speeches. it is a softer response.

now jesse jackson’s speech was more the “stir up the masses” type and very good. he is a fantastic speaker.

Yeah, I predict that Jesse Jackson, Jr. has a great political future ahead of him.

He has his father’s oratory cadences and skills without his father’s extraordinary need to be the sole person in the spotlight constantly.

We had a First Lady of that description from 1993 through 2001 and millions of Americans hated her for it and still do.

Go figure.

Are you claiming that either Clinton had an air of humility? Seriously?

Note: I’m assuming Phlosphr meant “humility” rather than “humble pie”, as humble pie is often used to mean humiliation or inferiority.

Yes, I meant humility.

Those who makes decisions based on rational analysis of the issues are not the target audience for a Convention extravagaza. The Vulcans among us have found our facts by now and reasoned out who, logically, best fits our vision of America’s future. The target audience instead includes those who are more emotional connectedness voters. They gotta feel that they can trust you, that you share their values, that they like you and yours. They will choose by their gut.

In short, you are not the audience who needs to be reached in this venue. You will read white papers and think about it. This is for those who feel about it more than think. And that’s a lot of voters.

I must admit that on a purely personal basis, I find Michelle Obama more likeable than Hillary Clinton. I think it’s simply that Michelle is more of a people person. Probably I’d like Bill Clinton more in person that Barack Obama, too. Reserved people tend to intimidate me. To a great extent, both HRC and Obama have broken out of their innate reserve during this election season, but I think both are somewhat aloof by nature. Nothing wrong with that, nothing that would keep me from voting for either of them as president. But for an afternoon chat? Give me the happy extrovert every time!

But do such voters watch the conventions or the debates?

I meant that Cindy’s speech is going to look really bad compared to Michelle’s, but reading it again I can see why it sounded otherwise. No more posting without coffee.

Yes. It is often the first time they are paying much attention at all. If it is boring they’ll turn on something else, but if interesting they’ll at least watch the keynoter. That’s why Conventions often give such a bounce.

Plot unfolds to assassinate Obama on national TV, a 4th arrest, more details

And so it begins…

Let me get John Conyers on the horn for you…I’ve got his number tacked to my wall over here…

I’ve got to say, that while I’m a conservative and will probably hold my nose and vote for McCain, you guys have a real winner there in Obama. I disagree with almost 100% of his positions, but he’s very articulate, intelligent, and seems to have a top-notch family. I expect he will get a huge bounce out of the convention…

There may be less here than meets the eye.

Still alarming, if sadly predictable.

I certainly hope so. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have been so worried about such things since the spring, maybe because I remember JFK, MFK, and MLK.

JFK, RFK, and MLK were all killed before I was born, but I’m still very worried for the Obamas. Just watching Michelle speak last night, totally exposed in front of all those people, freaked me out. I’m really having trouble watching live coverage of the convention and I think I’ll probably tape BO’s speech on Thursday and watch it later.

Every time I see him (and even more, her) in public doing meet and greets, there’s a part of my brain screaming “someone could be waiting to kill you!” Imagine how hard it must be for them to have the courage to carry on.
