Democratic National Convention August 19-22 2024

I did not see Taylor sing, but did see two other musical acts.

Mickey Guyton sang “All American” and Jason Isbell sang “Something More Than Free.”

Overall, I thought it was an excellent first night. I loved the focus on reproductive rights and the direct tying of the overturning of Roe to Trump: “Trump’s abortion ban” repeated over and over. Very effective, IMO. Sometimes, some of the more - shall we say - direct speeches (e.g. Jamie Raskin) came across as a bit crass to me and jarred a little with the overall forward-looking and hopeful tone, but I understand that one must throw meat to one’s base.

I do think they could have edited a bit. Biden’s speech was largely wonderful, but how many people outside that arena saw it? I was drifting myself, through no fault of Joe’s. They crammed too many other people in there before him.

There was a lot to like, but honestly I think my favorite thing was Kamala coming out in a TAN SUIT. (Gasp!) That is some next-level trolling, incredibly subtle but effective at the same time for anyone who remembers the Obama years. Well-played, madam Vice President.

You know that meme of “shut up and take my money!”? For me, when Warnock was speaking it was “keep talking, but take my money!”. He was spell-binding.

Agreed.

Democratic National Convention has a YouTube channel - they air it live, straight through with no breaks, and no talking heads

I thought it was a powerful night. My only criticism was the crowd interrupting Biden so often while he was trying to make a point. I hate chanting in general, and they really looked almost like the mindless Republicans (maybe that’s too harsh). Applaud at the applause lines, stand up and shout at the beginning and end if you wish, but stop the never ending “we love Joe” chants and let the man speak.

On the other hand, I know Joe Biden feeds off the energy of crowds, so perhaps I’m being too critical.

It was getting a bit much, but I get it. We do love Joe and are thankful to him. I still prefer him to even Harris, but yes, he would be 86 in four years and that is awfully old for a president.

I want him to live to 100 and get some retirement in there.

With my TV package (Rogers) CNN and MSNBC are in different bundles, strangely enough…one would think that all the major news networks would be in one tier, but there you go. I went for the one that contains MSNBC (and, sadly, Faux, but I just never go to that channel) because CNN aggravates me so much.

Biden served honorably for a long time and without scandal. He had some missteps, but don’t we all? I think he really believed in what he preached and did his best to make it happen. You done good, son.

Biden fully deserves all the love he’s getting. The DNC is in part a farewell party in which his country symbolically returns the love he’s shown for it, while at the same time celebrating the passing of the torch to a new generation. All of which stands in stark contrast to Trump’s treachery, disloyalty, and self-serving grift. Trump predicted that Biden would use the convention to angrily reclaim his candidacy, because that’s just what Trump would do. But Biden is not Trump, and Harris is not Trump. This is the stark choice that America has to make, while it can still make choices.

I agree completely. (if you’re responding to my comment, it wasn’t about the showing of the love, it was about the constant and unnecessary interruptions of his speech.)

And it would not be unexpected to just have a brief video appearance before the candidate’s closer just restating, “we all know what needs doing, so make me proud, stand with her and go get them”

I sort of wonder if they left the platform as it was to continue to misdirect Trump’s rage toward Biden rather than Harris. Probably not, but I like the idea.

Biden flew to Santa Barbara after his speech his plane landed just down the road from me. He’ll be spending time at the ranch of a friend of his in Santa Ynez not too far from the old Reagan ranch.

Maybe it was just “This is the Democratic party. This is what we stand for – and we continue to stand for it. From us you’ll get consistency, not chaos.”

I feel like Warnock has a big future ahead of him on a national stage.

At least its not as bad as the Republicans 2020 platform which was just directly copied from 2016 including digs as the incompetence of the current administration, not accounting for the fact that that had switched from Obama to Trump.

He could not have picked a more wonderful place to begin his new life as a former president. I hope he and the family enjoy every moment!

The highlight of tonight’s speakers will be Barack and Michelle Obama, but I see where two other interesting choices are scheduled to speak: Adam Kinzinger and Stephanie Grisham. The former is a former Republican member of the House of Representatives from Illinois; and the latter was Trump’s White House press secretary for a while.

I can guess at what the Obamas will speak about, but it’s Kinzinger and Grisham who really intrigue me, because neither was a Democrat. What are they going to say? Especially Grisham, who was so close to Trump. Gonna be interesting, that’s for sure!

This is just a little vacation. I’m certain he’ll be retiring to his home in Delaware.
