Democratic National Convention August 19-22 2024

I would expect them to do a good job. Just not certain it would be easy to access in Canada which was what started this discussion.

But yes, PBS and CSPAN are good sources in the US.

I can’t speak for the BBC, but I do know that the CBC wouldn’t cover tonight from start to finish, the way American sources would. At best, CBC would show three minutes of highlights on the 11 o’clock news.

I didn’t check their programming for tonight, but I’d be willing to bet that it included one or two of CBC’s own drama series, and maybe a nature documentary. But definitely not the entire Night 1 of the DNC.

ETA: I also get PBS; thanks for reminding me.

PBS had some commentary. Kinda stumbly and not well planned it seems. Their talking heads can’t get a solid point out.

I’ll be honest, I usually just watch the roll call of states because it’s entertaining but I often tune out the speeches. I tuned in to see the tribute to Biden but I actually listened to every speech. I even paused the TV to go to the bathroom. Everybody was on fire. The only thing I missed was a tribute video for Biden. Biden’s speech was pretty much the one he would have given accepting the nomination, with added support for Harris. I watched him walking away, though, and I’m still glad he stepped down. I did tear up when he quoted the lyrics “America I gave my best to you”.

I didn’t see any musical acts. Did James Taylor sing? I also wanted to credit Shapiro. He had a brief interview on MSNBC and again I was impressed. His views on Israel/Gaza are close to my own. Is he not on the speakers’ list? They certainly have no shortage of excellent speakers but he is part of the future of the party.

I do think everyone did a good job of starting with praising Biden then pivoting to supporting Harris.

Finally, I too am wondering when Trump is going to start ranting. I wonder if he still thinks Biden is going to take back the nomination.

Look and see if you can stream MSNBC online. Just a thought.

Spoiler coding off-topic Canadian cable company nuts and bolts for @Spoons or anyone else in the Great White North who is looking for how to get the best deal on MSNBC:

I worked for a big cable company in Canada (well, one of the smaller big ones that got bought by one of the big big ones) so I’d encourage you to check packaging and prices if you haven’t done so for a couple of years. There are deals to be had but you have to ask for them.

FYI, also make sure you’re not on the “do not email” list. I had to laugh once when I was in billing and a lady complained that we weren’t telling her about the deals. She was on the “do not email” list so we were legally prohibited (by threat of huge fines) from letting her know about the deals.

In any case, adding MSNBC a la carte should cost about $6/month and if you’re renewing your entire internet and TV setup you might be able to get them to give it to you for “free” (as in the cost is offset by a monthly bill credit) for up to a year. Please feel free to send me a direct message if you need more information.

As for the topic, Trump promised me that Dark Brandon was going to come out and steal the nomination right back from Kamala. I’m a little disappointed. Did Biden even make a joke about it? I would have loved it if he messed with Trump like that.

No Dark Brandon jokes. But he hit DJT pretty hard with a number of lines. I expect some Twuth posts soon or overnight.

There was this;

CNN photo gallery of Day 1. Impressive!

Ok, I am apparently not crazy. James Taylor got cut for time.

And the first major campaign mistake. They released their platform but forgot to change Biden’s name to Harris.

If there is a segment tribute to Carter they should have James Taylor perform as the prelude and then we can pretend for a moment it is the 1970s all over again.

Does it look bad that Biden went on vacation and won’t be there for Harris’ speech?

Not to be a Debbie Downer…but the most frequent occurrence is a convention bump that dissipates after a week or two. Some do contribute to a modest permanent improvement in polling.

I hope and think this will be the latter type. No “double digits,” mind you — but even just a 1% improvement in the right places could make all the difference this time around.

Not really in my view as I don’t remember outgoing presidents sitting through their party’s new nominee. Don’t want to overshadow the nominee’s big moment but also a bit awkward probably as you still have months to serve of your own term. I expect Biden will hit the trail for Harris in the rust belt.

Just want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Jamie Raskin’s speech. Especially his dig at JD Vance.

The potential special case is the newness of Harris as the central figure.

Her campaign has so far been quite successful at defining her to the many who really had no strong previous opinions about her before; this convention is timed just as the free media excitement about her as the new bright shiny was petering out and polling possibly settling into its new normal. If nothing else the convention bump might test what her ceiling is, and maybe actually be timed just right to further get her image defined in the eyes of more who still don’t have much of any sense of who she is and what she represents.

In the movies, there’s a pretty typical scene where the Successor steps to the podium, the desk, up on stage, etc., and the Beloved Retiring Person is seen through the window getting in their car and driving away. Or in a period piece, getting into the horse-and-carriage and driving away. It’s appropriate that he not be there.

I called it a night before Biden’s speech, unfortunately. The sustained ovation for Hillary was nice, and she gave a good speech. Warnock got his brimstone on. The whole thing was uplifting, and I think the message of hope and inclusion is working.

Just the opposite.

“This is your show now. I’m not going to upstage you. It’s all about you.”
