I do understand that, but I can see how my choice of words was confusing. Thanks for the clarification.
This is what’s being reported. I hope she gets into specifics that we haven’t heard before.
CHICAGO — Trump White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham will speak at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, one of several Republican voices this week meant to highlight the “extremism” of Donald Trump.
“I never thought I’d be speaking at a Democratic convention. But, after seeing firsthand who Donald Trump really is, and the threat he poses to our country, I feel very strongly about speaking out,” Grisham said in an exclusive statement to NBC News.
Both Kitzinger and Grisham are members of the “Republicans for Harris” group and are thoroughly fed up with Trump. Grisham, former press secretary for Melania and then press secretary in the Trump administration, ought to have some choice words. A few weeks ago she told the Washington Post, [non-paywalled link]
“You can only be hit over the head so much and be told your own country sucks so much before you get fatigued by it. I think people yearn for a message of hope. Now that I’ve taken a step back and watch [the Trump campaign] more as a citizen, it’s just sad and depressing to watch.”
I am curious what they expect out of Grisham. Reading her wikipedia page, she sounds like a loathsome opportunist who will saying anything and whose sole redeeming act is resigning from her job as Melania’s chief of staff a couple of weeks before her position would have naturally ended and testified against her boss to the Jan 6th committee.
I assume she will just go over the highlights of her book spreading spilling the tea on her former boss, but its hard to square his being a threat to Democracy while at the same time justifying working to spread his lies for years with out complaint. And relative to the other speakers I think her complaints will come off as petty. Overall I think they probably should have left her beneath the rock she slithered under.
Thanks for that, @wolfpup . That’s a good introduction to what she will speak about, and I’m looking forward to what she has to say. I did find it interesting that your link said,
If she’s feeling that way, then there really has to be some bad blood between Grisham and Trump. He, of course, will proclaim “Disloyalty!” in the wake of her speech, but I hope that her speech, especially from her as a former insider, shows that the emperor indeed has no clothes.
I dunno. Did you read the article I linked to just above? Even if she is a craven opportunist – and that’s far from clear as people do learn and change – it’s useful to showcase former Trump sycophants who are, as I said, now thoroughly fed up with him. A rat fleeing a sinking ship is still a rat, but the opinions of such rats offer good insight into the condition of the ship, and good questions about why anyone would still be on it.
Granted that this sort of display goes against the general theme of hope and joy of the Harris-Walz campaign, but a little mud-slinging is sometimes necessary. After tonight there are two more full days for fun and optimism.
This did not escape my notice, either. Loved it.
It is striking the balance. Team Harris is not forgetting to remind voters of the shitshow that Trump is. There is reason to vote against him and they are reminding people of that. They are however not attributing strength to him in the process. He is pathetic and a lying loser who wants to do bad things but they are less making him the big bad. Meanwhile there is a larger dose of what to vote for.
Fully agree, but I think the Obamas will be the final speakers; Michelle first, followed by Barack to finish the evening. They should return the convention to a message of hope and joy, and end tonight on that note. Grisham will be earlier in the evening.
I just heard that they’re going to be getting started a little earlier this evening, because last night ran a little overlong. Part of that was Biden’s speech going longer than expected, but that wasn’t the only problem. James Taylor’s performance was cut before Biden spoke, for example.
Starting a little early. Hm. Guess I’ll have to stock up with more beer.
CNN has a whole article on tan-suit-gate!
LOL, very cool.
Does anyone know how many people watched last night? I haven’t yet seen any estimates.
Here’s the best I could find, so soon after last night:
Of interest:
All times Eastern.
Thank you, @Spoons!
I’ve only seen clips this morning, but AOC’s passion had me tearing up.
I was watching it on and off at first, but the constant blather from the CNN people drove me nuts, so I shut it off.
When I got bored of reading, I tried it again, and came in in the middle of AOC. And I was pretty much hooked. I usually don’t have much tolerance for such events, but they absolutely nailed the tone, and most of the timing. They probably had a few too many speakers, which is why it ran late, but each speaker was pretty short and too the point.
She was spot-on. Trump would sell this nation out for $1 if it helped him in any way.
Hillary made an appearance on Colbert’s show, which he was doing live from a HUGE 4000-person auditorium in Chicago. Stephen said to her, that in spite of her being at the convention earlier, isn’t his audience the biggest and most enthusiastic she’s seen today, bigger than the convention. She said actually, the convention was yesterday, Monday, while his live show didn’t get started until Tuesday. That made Colbert laugh.
I just watched AOC 's speech too, and damn, she’s a rock star. One thing that stands out to me is how well she’s learned to play the political game over the past several years. She’s gotten more disciplined and leans into vocally supporting all Dems, not just the ones that rigidly align with her own ideology. I think she still holds the progressive beliefs that got her first elected, but she’s learned to tone down the rhetoric better than perhaps her fellow Squad members. She strikes me as much more savvy than, say, Rashida Tlaib. Which probably explains why she’s speaking in prime time at the DNC and Tlaib isn’t.
Exactly. She’s paying her dues, gaining allies, and building her political base. She’ll make a run for the presidency in 2036 (plus or minus 4 years).
