Democratic National Convention August 19-22 2024

That photo is Pulitzer material.

It really is.

The problem is it looks like two photos. There needs to be some visual element crossing that perfect white line.

I know. It is definitely a picture that people have to explain is real.

I’ll get right on it.

To me, this picture, when contrasted with the “iconic” Trump bloody raised fist picture, represents a perfect visual contrast between the two campaigns: one is a violent, militant attack, and the other is a hopeful message with an eye towards the future of the country.

Btw, Inna… a one-time Trump voter… is voting for Kamala.

Realize that her speech had to reach not only her followers, but more importantly, it had to reach the questioning Trump supporters who could be turned away from him.

A lot of people really respond to that sort of emotional leadup (fluff).

I thought she did a fine job of demonstrating her commitment to the people, in contrast with you-know-who. She laid out her case the way a trial lawyer would, telling the story and hitting all the points.

A summary of key words spoken at the conventions by would-be Prezzes and Vices. Interesting contrast.

Boiled down, the Democrats are the party of Freedom and the Future and the GOP is the party of God and Groceries.

According to Lindsey Graham when talking to Jake Tapper, when he watched the DNC: “Well, I didn’t see what you saw,” Graham told Tapper with a laugh. “If you’re a Republican, you saw a hate fest. You saw a hate fest full of insults.”

“Yes, Senator Graham, but I asked you about the Democratic convention.”

Perfect!

I really appreciated the Republican speakers at the DNC. I hoped they would reach other Republicans who were hate-watching or who were truly curious about what the Democratic Party had to say. Today in The Bulwark there was an article by Adam Kinzinger about his experience as a Republican DNC speaker and he dropped this disappointing but not surprising bit of info:

(I later learned that Fox News cut away during my speech and those of the other Republicans at the DNC. I guess that’s one indicator of success.)

So Fox viewers never saw any of the Republican speakers warning about the danger of trump and urging fellow Republicans to choose country over party. As if I needed any more proof that Fox “News” is nothing but a propaganda machine.

I hate to doubt the NYT as a source, but I can’t believe that “illegal” or “immigrants” or “crime” weren’t on the radar for most spoken words at the RNC.

I was seeing some reports that the convention was a superspreader event. Somehow, though, Covid seems like less of a threat than it was 4 years ago.

I just got COVID (really). Now it all makes sense, it was from watching the convention. Thoughts and prayers, Dopers. (Kidding aside, I’m almost all better.)

It is not immediately clear how widespread the virus was at the four-day party gathering in Chicago last week. Tens of thousands of people converged on the Windy City for the convention.

Several others also shared their diagnoses on social media.

It certainly might have been a superspreader, and I don’t doubt some people got COVID, but ATM the New York Post is the only US news reporting this on my first page of hits for DNC superspreader and then it’s repeated in places like X and Times of India. I’ll wait for actual news with numbers, not “several others” on social media.

I’m about the last person to minimize COVID, but super spreaders are pretty much a daily occurrence these days. With the huge summer surge we’ve had, just about any gathering of more than 100 people has been a superspreader, of which there have been many. Not sure what’s so special about the DNC.

A chorus in my region gave a concert, and over 50 people got COVID. I imagine there were some democrats present.

I’d be guessing any possible above population wide number of covid case diagnoses at the DNC are partly due to the selection bias of people testing. Seriously. Few test anymore. Got a fever and or a cough? People hopefully stay home until fever is gone 24 hours and they are improving whatever the cause but few of the general public test anymore. Test any large group of people and you’ll find some testing positive.
