You know, I haven’t locked my doors in 10 years and couldn’t find my housekeys for a million dollars tax free. I’ve choosen to live in a very rural area of Texas where, if you are murdered in your bed, it will most likely be a member of your immediate family that does the deed.
And no, I don’t hitchhike anymore but I do pick up the occasional hitchhiker- stopped for a guy and his dog in June. He turned out to be a WOOFer working his way to Florida. If you threaten me when I’m behind the wheel of my truck, I’m going to stage a controlled crash into a tree. The airbags will deploy and we’ll both be stuck until the sheriff comes to take you away.
I’ve also camped for days with complete strangers (peace activism work), trusted two people I didn’t know from Adam with $318.00 worth of product when they drove for 150 miles to buy my chicken but neglected to bring a checkbook (was paid in 3 days). In 5 years of selling at the market and commercially I’ve never been given a bad check by a customer. I extend credit to my regular clients at the farmers market when needed (always paid by the next weekend), let volunteers stay on my farm (more WOOFers) without checking references, and employed convicted felons.
I’m no Pollyanna-I’ve structured my life to minimize potential risk. So far, so good.
I don’t normally read Ibn Warraq’s trollish threads/posts for basically the the same reason I ignore Frothing Finn’s. They both bore the shit out of me with their mutual condescending act. Never mind the the cheesy-as-hell bromance they’ve got going on – though I wish to be invited to whatever ceremony should they wish to make it formal. As long as they both keep their vows to under five minutes.
And that there are actually two of them. Big IF.

Sometimes being over the top can be good when there’s an irrational position that people are treating with too much reverence. That’s what DT does IMO; a comedy, over the top, “the emporer has no clothes”. It’s great that he always does that, even when my position differs from his.
…which it does on things like geopolitics. He does seem to have taken on the zeitgeist of “everything that we do is about oil”, which is a position that really annoys me (I recently had a debate with someone who told me I was being naive for not understanding that America’s involvement in Kosovo was because of oil and the corporations, man).
I also never lock my door… but anyway, just to let you know, your plan won’t work. Airbags will deploy for under a second before deflating; indeed many people swear they never even inflated. I can’t think of a way to “stage a controlled crash” that isn’t very likely to end in serious injury or death that would guarantee the assailant doesn’t escape. And do you really want to be trapped in a car with some guy who’s threatening you?
Much better idea imo is to drive as quickly and erratically as possible, and ideally in a way that catches people’s attention so police are notified and come looking for you. The assailant will hopefully not interfere with you if he’s guaranteed to cause a car accident.

Well, as I just said I don’t agree with all his opinions but think he makes a great contribution to the board.
Besides, holding the opinion that most American women think all men are potential rapists does not make him a bigot. It’s a generalization; I’d be more comfortable with “many” women, but as I said he exaggerates things a little to draw attention to a point.
Many women do seem to think like that IME. And if you flick through a few books in the Feminism section of your local library / bookshop, many of the books will describe men in exactly that way.
Don’t condemn his one saving grace. Besides progressives and men already have a bad name. Both equally deserved.

As an Aussie who is mostly proud that we’ve fought alongside the US in every war since WWII, but who doesn’t want our soldiers to be dragged into a pointless war with Iran, I’ve found myself agreeing with Der Trihs far more often than I’ve disagreed with him.
He always states the reasons for his beliefs, and I find most of his arguments quite compelling.
