Desperately seeking something funny to read!

So heres the deal, I’m in São Paulo Brazil.
I have a 1 to 2 hour bus commute each way to work and back.
After almost 5 years I can say that IT’S DULL, SO DAMN DULL
AND DESPERATELY BORINGLY DULL I THINK I’M GONNA CRACK! AAHHHHHhhhRRGH!

Ahem.

Now, I can only get my hands on the magazines TIME,
NEWS WEEK, and THE ECONOMIST on a regular basis - BORING!
I want funny stuff to read, I have printed and read ALL of
the Straight Dope archives that are not in the books,
all the works written by Lore Sjöberg of the
Brunching shuttlecocks fame,(which if you don’t know you should check
out), http://www.brunching.com/fs-date-authorlist.html ,
some of the “teamings” articles, lots of Dave Barry
and a good bit of “News of the weird”.
Well, I’m out of ideas! Don’t get me wrong, there is no shortage
of reading material here, but I like funny stuff, and most of
the humorous subtleties of the Portuguese language escape me and
I often just don’t see what’s so funny. Books in English here
are expensive to a point where I can’t afford them, and the ones
I would like, I have to order from a book shop or Amazon and then
I pay a big import tax. Wahha! Sooooooo If you all could
post links to funny articles, essays, comedians, pundits
even stuff YOU wrote that I could print out and read during
my daily dreaded bus ride from hell I would
be MOST grateful. not much of a pit rant I know but with all the
whining involved, I figured this was the right spot for my
humble request.

Thanx. Janx.

Henry Raddick’s reviews at Amazon.com

At this writing he has nearly 300 reviews. Take you awhile to get through them. Mostly Tongue in Cheek type reviews. I’ve not read them all, you see, so I can’t say how many are serious, but I haven’t seen a serious one yet.

Why is this in the Pit?

Computer Stupidities the things people call in to tech support

Peter's Evil Overlord List what not to do if you become evil overlord

fanfic.net for lotsa fanfiction

www.mrcranky.com for funny movie reviews

www.theonion.com for satire news

bofh.ntk.net/Bastard.html is all about the most evil computer operator to grace the face of the earth

Malcolm Gladwell – Home | Malcolm Gladwell is just a really cool article about people who can read facial language.

pinky.wtower.com/mst3k/mistings.shtml if you happen to like MST3K

www.timecube.com if you desire incoherence

I’ll see if I can think of any more…

Sorry, that should be fanfiction.net. The other one appears to have a lot of anime fanfic though, so if you’re into that kind of thing…

If we’re including webcomics…

http://www.nuklearpower.com/index.php - 8-bit Theatre
http://www.nuklearpower.com/index.php - Bob & George: The Comic Strip (actually a Megaman spritecomic)
http://www.lifeofwily.com/ - Life of Wily (another Megaman spritecomic)
http://www.schlockmercenary.com/ - Actually one of the best sci-fi comics I’ve ever seen.

I’m probably going to hell, but I think that this article from the September 2000 issue of Mother Jones, (a magazine which I ordinarily hold in fairly high regard,) is so funny it actually hurts.

Or you could peruse Charles Fort’s Book of the Damned. I think I should very much like to have known Mr. Fort.

From Melandry

I put it here because of the slight bitch factor that my OP
starts with, feel free to move the thread if you want.

I’m just now getting to the links, THANK YOU ALL! This
should keep me out of the doldrums for some time!

You know, this is disturbing. I have every suggested link of Super Gnat’s in my bookmark file.

I recommend www.mrlizard.com

I recommend Sluggy Freelance, one of the best webcomics out there. They have about all of them archived so you can start from the beginning.

So, I printed my heart out yesterday.
Standing there on the bus, feeling
the mind numbing boredom start to set in
at the first traffic signal, I whip out
my handy dandy home made magazine ™ with
choice selections from “the Onion”
“Acts of gord” and the “bastard
operator from hell” (or something).
Understand now that the busses here
are packed to the point where riding
them is almost a sexual experience,
you touch people, and get touched by
people in and with parts of the body
you didn’t know you had, sardines in a
can have more space then we do. So as soon as I
start reading I also start giggling, people are
looking at me like “Jeez, what’s up with
the gringo” and start moving away
(seriously), then comes an article from
“The Onion”, (something about dolphins
spontaneously growing opposable thumbs),
I went into full bore, side splitting,
maniacal laughter, then I suddenly had
LOTS of personal space, couldn’t have
done better if I had farted!
So thanks again, all and keep em
coming!

OK you asked for it!! Here’s what I do on my computer at work during lunch, in lieu of generating coherent/ entertaining/ reading-worthy SDMB posts.

Some of my favorite SDMB posts:

“Mr. Manners Guide to Posts That Should Not Be Made”
Frankly, just do a search for threads originated by the very talented & articulate Fenris, and you will nearly always be guaranteed a good entertaining read.

“A lurker delurks with a tribute to the SDMB”

“Write your own Star Trek episode”

“Shut Those F*ing Kids Up!”
Somewhat short, but very hilarous at the end. Don’t peek ahead - wait for it.

“SDMB Classic Posts”
You’ve probably already stumbled across this one. (Look IN PARTICULAR for the thread/post about Telemarketers!)
MORE:

Mark Morford/SFGate - “Notes&Errata”
General ranting/commentary, somewhat funny, often political in nature. Run a search of his archives for more columns (sorry, couldn’t find a link - browse his page)

“Satirewire.com”
Very Onion-esque style humor. Unfortunately, regular updates/additions to the site ended back in August, but there’s a lot of material in there to peruse.

“Ravings from Dave” - sort of a Dave Barry wanna-be
Site not updated often (July’02 was last, as of 10/24), but there’s an Archives section to go through

Obviously you’ve already found “News of the Weird”

From the “Car Talk” website - their Rants&Raves archive
Some funny, some lame; you’ll have to sort through them
Well that’s all I could find (for now). Have fun!
Back to lurking for me - oh sh!t, lunch is wayyyy over… And I didn’t even get halfway through the Pit. <grumble>

'Zot
P.S. Very minor gripe, Janx, and then I’ll go away: It appears you may be adding a hard-return to each line of text in that little edit window when you compose a post… If so, you don’t need to do that. Really.

pZott

Thanks Soooooo much for the linx!

About my psychotic typing style: I know I don’t need
a hard return on each line, and I know the flow is
annoying to look at/follow and I’m sorry,
but I’m doing this for YOU.

Lemmee 'splane: I cant spell for dog doo, so I write my
responses on my e-mail program in order to correct the
spelling then cut and paste it to the board. that’s why the
funkey format, if there is some suggestion as to how to
pre-format (short of actually learning how to spell that is)
for the board I’m all fingers.

BTW if anyone cares, this is the article that was so damn
funny that it made people get away from me:
http://www.theonion.com/onion3630/dolphins_evolve_thumbs.html
specifically the line…

Well…I guess you had to be there.
