I’m a little surprised I don’t see a thread on this anywhere yet since the game is out now. Isn’t this the most expensive video game ever made and the biggest release of the year? 4 consoles all at one time?
I haven’t bought it yet because I was waiting to hear what dopers thought of it so far.
There were a million commercials for it during the Simpsons Marathon last month and I was very interested so I looked it up and saw it was PS4 only…I only have a PC for gaming.
Played for a short bit last night on the Xbox One.
First impression: Visually very pretty (good use of sourced lighting and shadows). Great sound & music. Gameplay itself, however, was kind of meh. Bog standard FPS shoot-em-up. See alien, shoot alien in head, rinse, repeat. It’s not bad, mind you, but nothing groundbreaking in that respect.
That might just be the first few missions, though, and I don’t have many abilities unlocked yet. Perhaps it gets more interesting as you go on.
What remains to be seen, however, is if my friends will stop playing Minecraft (which just came out for the Xbox One a few days ago) and start playing this. It might be much more interesting with people I know.
I mentioned in the video game letdown thread that I played the beta. The game feels like Borderlands without soul. I won’t be buying it, at least not anytime soon.
Game seems fun. My only problem is the ghost bot thing. It sounds like a bad impersonation of the short guy from game of thrones only he just woke up and is doing robot voice.
So I was thinking about it last night and it is alot like Borderlands. I think I just really like being able to see numbers and HP etc… like an RPG. The controls on this game seem good and it’s one of the few newer shooters that doesn’t give me weird stomach aches when I play it.
I’m most surprised by the graphics actually. They are good, but I was expecting to be blown away since this is THE flagship game of the year and it has been in development for so long.
I’m not totally sure how the multiplayer works. I went out on the second mission and could see name tags of a couple of other people running around but never actually saw them.
I am loving Destiny! I guess I am not spoiled on the basic-space-FPS style gameplay yet, because I’m having a blast. The weapons are really interesting and a different balance than I’ve found in a game before. And the special powers for the different classes all add a lot to the battles too.
The bosses are challenging and terrifying too. Really I cannot say enough good things about this game. The environments are both huge and detailed with no repeating textures or buildings. The lighting effects are like nothing I’ve seen in other games. Your eyes actually adjust to bright light and darkness gradually.
I’m not sure how coop play really works at this point. I know you can invite someone who’s in the level with you to become your friend, and once they’re friends, you can invite them to join your fireteam to do a mission together. I haven’t done that though, the game is just a blast even just running around solo. I see other players in the same level and we’ll briefly join forces to fight some enemies, but then we’ll go separate ways since we usually have different objectives.
I am playing on x360 – MarkoDillo. Add me and let’s team up!
Oops I had done a quick search (while watching the Simpsons) and thought I saw that it was a PS exclusive. Thanks for the correction. Further info has compared it to Borderlands which I liked but didn’t love so I may still pass.
Just got into it tonight. I’m not spoiled on sci-fi FPSes, so that’s not much of a thing for me–so far, I’m pretty well all  about it. I’m a bit rubbish at FPSes, but so far I’ve done all right. Looking to hook up with a couple of friends for coop missions soon–though I fear we may all be too disparate in levels. Anyway, I’m Law-Monkey there, on the PS4, if you’re looking for an extra gun.
I played a bit more last night. It still seems pretty fun. The early guns all seem really weak but I guess I just need to get better at headshots.
One thing I’ve noticed, and I don’t play alot of FPS’s really so I don’t know if this is typical, but when I’m getting pounded and on the verge of death if I retreat far enough they generally don’t pursue me and my shields recharge. Even with the first couple bosses. Kid of feels like exploiting the game or something.
That’s pretty typical for FPS games. Bad guys generally have fairly strict patterns that they follow, and you’d be able to exploit things way more if you were able to force them to follow you indefinitely - a tactic called “kiting.”
Many of the bosses get shields too, and can pull similar shenanigans (except they generally use reinforcements rather than distance, though I’ve seen a few run laps around obstacles.)
And since you can easily blunder into an area with lvl ??? mobs (especially when looking for loot boxes/spinmetal plants)…it’s really nice that they let you run away, rather than waste all your ammo.
Yeah what’s the story with enemies with “?” for level. I found a Dreg in a cave in Russia who seemed to be invincible and repeatedly killed me with a single punch.
