Deviated September (Monthly Mini-Rants)

That’s news to me. I can’t even find any reference to one in Scotland.

Bank Holiday?

Anyway, my wife wound up calling this office back and they said they were unable to reach her by phone. She confirmed that they had the correct number. I know there is some fiddling around needed for dialing a US mobile number in the UK, but I would expect that this place knows how to do that. She gave them my # but my phone never rang either. So, oh well…

None listed that I can find …
Anyway, good luck.

Here’s what I found.

Monday, September 28, 2026, is not a nationwide bank or public holiday across the entire UK, but it is observed as a local autumn public holiday in certain Scottish council areas, such as Glasgow.

So just a local holiday, not a national one.

Typical - just bad luck then !

I do a lot of ordering through Amazon. Most of the time an item is delivered by Amazon themselves, but every once in a while it will be the post office or UPS. It just seems to depend on the item you are ordering, who is actually selling it (often it’s someone other than Amazon that has a storefront on the Amazon web site) and where it is coming from. You just have to expect that this will happen sometimes.

When an item ships, you can check the tracking status and it will tell you how it is being delivered.

Dear housemates.

I obtained a bottle of chilli sauce for my benefit just this morning.

Why is it now only 3/4 full, just 3 hours later? Why is it even open? Who fucking ate it all?

I hate people, and especially people I live with.

Well, I think chili sauce has gone up in price in my market - I think it’s way over five bucks a bottle now. I wonder what brand it is! Some brands have too much vinegar but not the brand you’re writing about here.

Political ads, specifically those against Democratic candidates. Almost always chock full of lies, straw men, and shameless hypocrisy from beginning to end, endless reams of simplistic scare tactics. I must get 5 or so flyers of that sort each week in my mailbox (they do give me a workout shredding them by hand tho) and the TV ones are a constant thing on football telecasts, forcing me to always have my mute button at the ready.

Thing is, none of them seem geared towards convincing independents and people still on the fence, but are solely red meat for the GOP base.

But so far no anti-GOP flyers and few such TV ads, where the majority focus more on the Dem candidate vs. their opponent, and even for the negative ads I haven’t seen any which explicitly tie the GOP’er to Trump. I am hoping the Dems are saving their best ammo for the stretch run…

My ballot arrived in the mail a couple days ago. And will be returned tomorrow.

The stretch run is almost over. For me and millions like me. It began 6 weeks ago.

If indeed anyone is planning to wait to the last 2 weeks of October to get serious, they’ll miss influencing a number of voters far larger than the typical margin of difference in all but the most one-way of races. That’d be monumentally stupid.

It’s time to deploy the California Reaper. With added California Reaper.

I am certainly going to do that; I will probably (just) handle the heat, no one else will.

I had a housemate who would help herself to something in my cupboard, eat it all, buy a replacement, eat all that, then come and tell me it was my turn to buy one.

Apparently stealing something twice not only cancels out but creates an obligation, who knew?

I would have no problem with that.

Of course, I would then take that one I bought and put it somewhere the housemate couldn’t find it. And when the housemate then was forced to buy a new one, I’d eat that.

Once you figured out this ploy, what did they say when confronted with that truth?

But we’re housemates, we share things, don’t be so selfish!

She’s also the person who moved out leaving a half-full pot of stew on the hob. With 4 people working different shifts in the house, it was a little while before anyone worked out what and whose it was, by which point it was about crawling out the pot. When confronted about this by the (live-in) landlord, her response was, slightly paraphrased ‘Well, if it’s so disgusting it bothers you, why not just ignore it?’

God I love having my own house now.

For some reason my Prime Video selection started showing me closed captions in German yesterday.

I was in the middle of Season 3 and already been watching multiple episodes with English subtitles.

I don’t miss my roommate loudly playing Depeche Mode at 3 in the morning when I have work the next day.

Of course, now it’s my kid or my dog or something else doing that, but eh.

I used to be on the email list for my congressional representative (I think John James) but I couldn’t stomach it. He’d send stupid surveys like, “Do you believe our nation’s security is important?” And then use those results to claim people support immigration crackdowns or whatever. It was so intellectually dishonest and manipulative.

I wrote to him once to complain about the One Big Beautiful Bill gutting support for nonprofits. Canned response, typical Republican nonsense.

Ran some errands this afternoon and stopped at a liquor store to get some wine. A man was sprawled off to the side of the entrance and propped up against the building. He asks if I can spare anything to help and I (truthfully) told him I didn’t have any cash and keep walking. Then he asks if I can “at least buy him a drink” but I’m pretty much through the door and ignore him.

He’s still in the same spot when I leave and he’s yelling “hope you have the day you deserve MA’AM,” “stop being such a bitch!” etc.

He never asked any of the men walking by. None of them got harassed. Guess I should have asked the guy behind me to walk me to my car
